I don't normally do this, but after having bought the US release of Excel Saga on the weekend, I feel that I should try to make sure that Australian fans get as close to that release as possible.

So, Madman, would it be possible to:

- Have a humourous copyright warning at the front of the disc, in the vein of that on the US release?

- Include *all* the extras, including the clean OP/ED, Japanese OP/ED, Japanese Trailers and Japanese copyright notice.

- Include the 'AD Vid-notes'. This is *essential* and you should not even consider releasing these discs locally without the vid-notes.

- Include as many omake as possible from the ADV discs. There are none on the first disc, but the later discs promise to be an omake bonanza.

- Include as many of the extras from the later discs as possible. Get *everything*! Spare no expense!

- Use DVD-9s as necessary. There are a *lot* of extras that could use up a lot of space (I don't know the specifics), so please don't skimp on them just because you want to use a DVD-5 instead of a DVD-9. (The first Excel Saga DVD is a DVD-9).

- Include pack-ins, such as the A.C.R.O.S.S. Membership card. Again, this is essential, and *must* be included if you consider this a serious release.

- This is more a general request, but could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make front-matter (copyright notices, Madman logos etc from the start of the disc) skippable? Madman is one of the few Anime companies that forces us to sit through all this over and over again.

THank you for listening.

having seen only the ad for this anime on the PCPP coverdisc, I must concur with the 'Norm. and plead on my knees like the sick STOAT puppet that I am for the local release of this.

i fully agree with SN on this
all of this stuff must be inclued on the DVD (well me im not to worryed about ACROSS id card thing) But all these EXTRAS must and i mean MUST!!! be put on the R4 dvd
if they r not on there then i think u will lose sales on the DVD (me for one!!!)

It matters because it's annoying to have that delay (admittedly Madman's discs aren't as bad as Media Blasters and US Manga Corps, whose discs can have up to a minute of non-skippable front matter).

On ADV, Pioneer and Bandai discs, this is skippable, allowing you to jump straight to the menu on disc insert. After all, you've seen one copyright warning, you've seen them all, right?

And it is possible to do. The copyright notice only has to be on the disc, it doesn't have to be watched by the viewer. Many people prefer to watch anime straight away, rather than having to get up and make a coffee while the disc loads. The non-skippable bit is bad.

Oh, and I should point out that the first DVD of Excel Saga contains 5 episodes as well, if this wasn't already clear (In relation to DVD-9).

i'd say the only really important extras are the clean op/ed, Japanese op/ed, Japanese trailers, advid-notes and the omake..
Well, apart from the membership card (I'm not one for novelty items such as these), the rest just seem like rather useless items. I mean, you want to be able to skip the copyright notice (which I think is a good idea too) because "once you've seen one, you've seen them all", yet you want a japanese copyright notice included as an extra.. it doesn't make sense to me.
Anyways, apart from that, thanks for letting us know what was available on the R1 SN, hopefully madman will come up big with their promise of the majority of the R1 extra's being on madman's versions.. and hopefully madman have a big enough consumer base to acknowledge the benefit of using dvd-9's to make the consumers happy with top quality..

You've obviously not seen the Japanese copyright notice. Trust me, there's a *good reason* I want this on the disc. Same goes for the original Japanese trailers.

I agree fully with Storming Normans requests, i don't care much for the card but since we are getting it a whole six months after the americans (yes i know 6 months isn't long but this is EXCEL SAGA!) we desrve that too. And please use dvd-9.

Aren't the japanese trailers suppose to be hilarious like making the show out to be a love story and the japanese copyright warningis uppose to be quite funny too.

You are incorrect on this occasion. When you are making a DVD you can disable certain controls. Madman have explicitly disabled skipping those parts.

Trunk's Girl: Well, you could always buy the DVDs first and hope ADV sell the box individually later.

The ADV "box sets" aren't really box sets in the regular way. They use the same discs, but you do not get individual cases: they pack them all into one or two cases that hold many DVDs each.

I have to agree with all those requests. If the discs aren't identicle to the US ones, I'll be buying them instead. It's bad enough that we have to wait 6 months (although that could be ADV's fault) but if we miss out on all that extra stuff, I'll be forced to buy the US versions.

41.49 from dvdboxoffice inc shipping. and its guaranteed to have extras, and is available NOW ON DVD9. considering madmans track record with dvd9/extras, this site drives a hard bargain.

My question to madman is, what are we getting extra that makes holding out for telecined material worthwhile?

I'd just like to point out to all of you that Madman announced a while ago that all future releases would have the same extras, and waiting 6 months is nothing. And don't automatically assume that Madman won't use DVD-9. Everyone's cynicism ****es me off.

And Madman's inability to see that 5 episodes on a DVD-5 is compromising quality ****es me off. If not that, then Madman's inability to encode and compress the video so it doesn't macro block to hell ****es me off. This isn't macro blocking in a one frame flash (like in Kenshin), this is macro blocking that is completely visible during normal playback. Last episode on MSN 6 is the best example of this compromise.

Especially considering Madman's increased release schedule seems to be already resulting in discs rushed through QC abit too quick ie audio probs on recent discs......

RE the DVD bit: I agree with you there - I watch my discs in component and its really obvious. I'll pass the relevant threads along to Tim. Once it becomes cost effective and there's enough support, I hope that we'll be seeing DVD-9 discs more often.

If you're really keen on pushing the issue, I'd recommend giving Tim an e-mail/letter/ call about the issue. The more feedback, the more likely a response - that's why we have bilingual discs from MM after all, customer feedback.

Hi Team,

I am feeling charitable today..

we will do our best to get hold of all the crazy extras from Excel Saga for release.

I will look into making the intro logos skippable starting in about 2-3 months time.

Any DVD with more than 120mins of episodes (most 5 ep DVDs) we will make DVD-9 startng in a few months to keep you all happy. Note, that the DVD spec suggests that a DVD-5 can contain up to about 135mins without visual problems.

Cheers,
Tim.

I think that anime material is alot more demanding of mpeg2 than regular movies, hence the need to use layer 9 whenever possible
