Madman needs to pick this series of movies up, its the Hong Kong version of the Godfather!

I posted about it in the movie topic in the general chat forum but no one replied. Its impossible that I'm the only one on the board that knows this series.

Young & Dangerous 6 was on SBS just a few weeks back and it reawoke my hunger to possess this series.

Releasing a box set would be pretty sweet! Very Happy

Also I'll say this again Ekin Cheng is a god! *drools*

I hadn't seen any of this series till I watched it on SBS the other week. It was great Very Happy. I'm told the early ones are the best, so I would love to get my hands on them.

It's been such a long time since I've seen them but I think I've seen 1-3 and then 6. I've heard that 4-5 aren't so great but I thought 6 was fairly alright.

There is also a prequel which is set before Y&D1 and its set when the main characters are kids. I don't know all that much about it though.

I'm glad I've got some consensus on this board.

Anyway lets have it Madman and in a nice boxset too! Very Happy

Seen movies 1-3 and 6. Three would be my favourite as it has the right mix of storytelling and action for my liking. One and Two were good but six I could have done without.

I emailed MM about the series and a couple of other things, but nothing definite yet. As always- try and be patient, hopefully it will be picked up. If it is- I shall let you know as soon as I find out.

Well- Madman cannot discuss titles that are not definite yet, which sounds like they're interested in the series, but doesn't say that they're close to having it.

I'm sure someone will let you know as soon as all is made clear.

FYI, here are the films in the cycle, in order of release:

YOUNG & DANGEROUS
YOUNG & DANGEROUS 2
YOUNG & DANGEROUS 3
YOUNG & DANGEROUS 4
YOUNG & DANGEROUS 5
YOUNG & DANGEROUS THE PREQUEL
PORTLAND STREET BLUES (about Sister Thirteen)
THOSE WERE THE DAYS (about Chicken)
YOUNG & DANGEROUS 6: BORN TO BE KING

The extra films cited above are pretty good - Y&D THE PREQUEL was Nic Tse's breakthrough role, he got a Best Newcomer award for playing Ekin the younger, and created a minor stir because he was not legally allowed to attend the Cat III preview - he was only 17 at the time, too young to watch the film he had appeared in!

There's also a film called THE LEGENDARY TAI FEI starring Anthony Wong, but it looks a bit cheap; and ONCE UPON A TIME IN TRIAD SOCIETY starring Francis Ng is sort of the early years of his character Ugly Kwan from Y&D 1, and is a pretty funny but very black Y&D sendup.

There are a bunch of copycat films too - I really like WAR OF THE UNDERWORLD with Tony Leung. And SEXY AND DANGEROUS ranks a mention because it was shot and released in seven days! (If my memory serves me correctly)

A while back we projected Y&D1 in the Chinatown Cinema as part of one of our classic doubles nights - was very cool on the big screen, with the sound cranked up. If there is enough demand from Melbourne fans, we'll run Y&D2 some time in 2004.

Cheers,

Mark

i smell talk of hk movies Wink

dont mean to gloat, but i have the entire meal & all the side dishes to boot Twisted Evil

a damn good series, a must have Very Happy

original dvd's in hk by mei-ah (1,2 & 4) & all others by universe laser & video co.ltd

i must say that i despise mei-ah dvd's as their subtitles are the ones that are permanently burned onto the image Sad but $7 aud cant complain Wink

also other good ones would be
(here is a small sample of my hk dvd collection some of these are famous/popular/ hard to get titles)

horrible high heels (based on a true story from hk) people get killed, skinned their leather used for shoes
i doubt it would ever be released uncut in these parts Rolling Eyes

desperation verge is ok not a *must have* but it has its redeeming factors..

the peeping
the peeping tom (not the same as above)
street of fury
horoscope II the woman from hell
Killer (has some cast from y&d ie chicken)
the masked prosecutor
conspiracy
picture of a nymph
my name is nobody (has lead actress from jackie chan movie gorgeous)
the rules of the game
a man called hero
zu: warriors from magic mountain
romance of the west chamber
in the line of duty 1-5
the master
peacock king
the isle [cat III] (has lead actress from jackie chan movie gorgeous)
the storm riders (for the girls who like ekin yes he is in this)
tokyo raiders (ekin again)
from beijing with love
the first time is the last time
all men are brothers: blood of the leopard
battle creek brawl
magnificent warriors
the tai-chi master
clans of intrigue
sexy & dangerous (y&d spinoff)
the magic blade
last hero in china
sino-dutch war 1661
the blood rules
high risk
killer clans
brother of darkness
daughter of darkness
crime of beast II
red to kill
a chinese torture chamber story 2
tiger cage 1-3
a chinese ghost story 1 - 3
raped by an angel 1 - 5
sex & zen 1 - 3
erotic ghost story 1 - 3 (egs 1 was played by sbs awhile ago but was a butchered version at least 2mins was cut) [also this dvd is quite rare in hk took 3 days of searching to find a vendor who had a copy)
erotic ghost story: perfect match

i must say alot of these either wont be released or will be quite butchered
due to the high violence level / the graphical nature of the movie

ie.. chinese torture chamber story II
a woman is killed by being lowered onto a red-hot fire heated metalic ** well look in dictionary starting from "phal"
& horrible high heels even though its a true story
i doubt that the oflc would even allow it to be produced here
even some of the triad movies in my list
they will have a heart attack over Razz
some stuff is a little uneasy on the eyes
unless u work in a mortuary

& yes these are all from hk, uncut, produced in hk & not the garbage miramax, fox / disney licensed & ruined

if u really cant wait for a release of y&d here
some shops in chinatown can be ur friend Wink

hk movie review site => www.lovehkfilm.com

sorry if this is in the wrong post

Laughing in a way, i got them when i went over. packed lightly, ended up filling my suitcase with clothes, game consoles & console equipment & a lot of dvd's ended up having to send a seperate 10kg box back over to oz with all the other dvd's in it Razz

kinda like that box on the kettle honey & soy chips commercial/ad but bigger Wink

having a friend in hk also has many advantages Laughing

oh & also picked up "bullet proof monk" on dvd, original, not bootleg
b4 it was even released here

goes to show how we really do get most (all) things last here Twisted Evil

Nothing yet, but EE is in discussions for a number of films.

I'd give EE a little bit of time, they've only just done their first releases, and they really need to see how well those releases do before they can get into more discussions.

That's to say- If there doesn't really appear to be a very strong market, they may not be able to afford some licences, but then, they may also be able to bargain a licence down lower. There's also possibility of bundling the licence with other titles to be considered.

Basically- more patience, but if what has already been released does well, then they'll be able to bring out more stuff. Like MM got more opportunity to release more (and better features for) anime off the back of the success of DBZ.

you dont have to wait for these titles to be released through madman. why not buy them online. i discovered this site called www.dddhouse.com and they sell all HK and even japanese film. the discs are dirt cheap. you can pick up all the young and dangerous films for around HK30 each which is only about $6 aus.

yep they are legit. dddhouse amongst others offer dvds at good prices. BUT the Mei Ah dvds are crap. Y a D 1 Audio and picture quality average with burned in subs, missing subs at the beginning and no extras whatsoever. This is a early dvd issued by Mei Ah and hopefully they will remaster Y a D 1,2,4. Since Mei Ah has remaster heaps of titles at the moment, I hope they will do a better job of Y a D series. Wink

Mei Ah are upping their act and re-releasing HD masters of older titles, a BIG plus was when they re-released God Of Gamblers 1 all re-done and sparkling new... Such a relief that I can retire my orginal Mei Ah travesty. But as per the discussion, many older Hong Kong DVDs are substandard, but now their releases are on par with R1 NTSC transfers. I own at least 400 plus Hong Kong DVDs, and they were ALL purchased from DDDHouse, I did go through a fase of buying nearly every new release... But I have calmed down now... As Hong Kong did hit a lul for a couple of years where they didn't release anything but crap. Infernal Affairs kind of turned everything around, and now Hong Kong are going strong...

PLUS - Has Quincy changed his avatar? The one used in this particular thread is screwing up page formatting.

Other places to look for those Y&D titles are:

www.layoyo.com (quite often cheaper than DDDHouse), click the english tab on the top left to get the site in english...

or

www.yesasia.com

The quality of all the Mei Ah dvds in the Y&D series isn't that great, so I am another one who is hoping for a good remastering of those DVDs... will just have to wait and see if they do remaster these ones though.

I do own YAD Prequel and it has been released by Universe distribution. It's letterboxed (non 16:9) at 1:85:1. The picture quality is washed out with poor black levels, over saturation and print defects, but it is a very low budget movie and these faults aren't major detractions from the over all enjoyment. The sound is mono, the subs have their usual errors and the extras include trailer and cast bios. Nothing to splendid, but it's the only way you're going to see the flick...
