I am very impressed with the current slew of acquisitions Madman have got their hands on.
I would just like to second all the requests for more Takeshi Kitano films.
In particular Sonatine, Violent Cop, Dolls and Zatoichi
http://amazon.imdb.com/name/nm0001429/
Note: the R4 release of Hana Bi (one of my fave films of all time) was fantastic, I was surprised by the doco and quality of the disc
Kiyoshi Kurosawa's catalogue, may prove quite successful
http://amazon.imdb.com/name/nm0475905/
Takashi Miike (un-cut only please!) (unless Siren own them all)
http://amazon.imdb.com/name/nm0586281/
You seem to be onto Pang Bros. and Akira Kurosawa, so I won't worry there
Cheers |

Time And Tide, Returner, So Close, Tokyo Raiders and Double Vision are all already available via Columbia Tristar. Warriors Of Heaven And Earth is due August/September.
Universal own the Australian rights to The Twins Effect. It was originally scheduled for a July release, I believe that's been set back a few months.
Hero is owned by BVHE, I believe.
Very glad to hear of the Babycart movies being signed up. I'd personally like to add a vote for the Young & Dangerous series and the television series of Ring. |

Hows about a DVD release of Tsui Hark's The Blade? The old Aussie Chinatown Video had released it on VHS, what we need is an uncut, excellent master of this underrated swordflick. The current DVD available from the UK has a terrible picture and is a shocking DVD. Eastern Eye would be doing many a fan a good deed, if they released this. Mei Ah used to own the rights, but they don't anymore... Aparantly the rights are floating around somewhere....

I got a British release of The Blade (released by Hong Kong Classics). It's a piss poor job and it has non-removable subs. I think it's cut, too. (You can just imagine how pissed off I was.) But it was the best DVD realease out there.
Madman should pick this up and do a decent release.
edit: Note that Hong Kong Classics is not the same as Hong Kong Legends who have a good reputation with their DVD titles. _________________ Overused memes.

My suggestions would include the live action versions of:
- Casshern
- Devilman
- Cutey Honey
Unfortunately, my knowledge of Asian cinema is very limited so I can't suggest much. Hey I heard Godzilla mentioned a while back. Does that inlcude the new batch of movies done in recent years? They'd be cool to see. |

For people's information "Hong Kong Classics" are owned by "MIA" who also own "Tokyo Bullets".
Whatever label they come under MIA are a lousy distributor, it's even more annoying when you're forced to buy one of their DVDs as the competition is even worse. |

I would like to add another voice to that, I am really glad that Eastern Eye is releasing the original Godzilla movie but it would be necessary for all the movies could be released in their original screen format ie widescreen for everything past the first 1 or 2.
It would be great if these could be in slimline cases.
Something like a release order.
"Godzilla, King of the Monsters", 1954
Godzilla Raids Again, 1955
Godzilla vs. King Kong, 1962
Godzilla vs. the Thing, 1964
"Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster", 1965
Monster Zero, 1965
Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, 1966
Son of Godzilla, 1967
Destroy all Monsters, 1968
Godzilla's Revenge, 1969
Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster, 1971
Godzilla vs. Gigan, 1972
Godzilla vs. Megalon, 1973
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, 1974
Return of Mechagodzilla, 1975
Godzilla 1985, 1985
Godzilla vs. Biollante, 1989
Godzilla vs. Kingghidora, 1991
Godzilla vs. Mothra, 1992
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, 1993
Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, 1994
Godzilla vs. Destoryah, 1995
I know their are several newer movies as well... _________________ No longer a fan |

It's this Russian stop-motion cult-classic animated film (It played on CN recently). Made in the 70's, Cheburashka is this little endearing half-monkey, half-bear thing.
In Russia, teenagers have Cheburshka themed parties. The Cheburashkan parties are sorta like an oppostion to all the ego driven mainstream clubs, they turn all the money-supported coolness into warmth and humanity (much like the little critter himslef). Plus, Cheburashka has huge ears, so naturally he must like music.
It's basically based on good music (dance/electro) and good people looking for a good night out.
The Japanese absolutly love it too, but just for the cute factor. _________________ Anime Academy's Professor of Anime Physical Education

Pretty much everything I'm interested in has been mentioned (besides the innumerable ones I'm forgetting about) but any of the classic John Woo films as well as the Kitano, Wong Kar Wai and Miike stuff would be great (but only if uncut... there's not much point otherwise). Important to note that Miike's Dead Or Alive trilogy, Audition and a couple of others are already snapped up by Shock and Siren. Ichi the Killer and Gozu are the major ones I'm hanging out for, but I sincerely doubt we could ever get Ichi uncut, or with the quality of special features seen on the various international editions.
For a real suggestion, I say:
Neco z Alenky (AKA Alice)
Dir. Jan Svankmajer 1988
Excellent little surrealist stop motion animation take on Alice in Wonderland. It's very hypnotic to watch; I'm sure a few people here may have caught it on SBS as they've played it a few times. _________________ Drink Milk™, it’s Nature’s Water |

I would love to see the three Gamera films from the 1990s in R4. They're licenced by ADV in the US - the only thing is the first film (Gamera: Guardian of the Universe) doesn't have a very good transfer (including being 4x3). Plot and SPFX are way ahead of recent Godzilla films. |

I've barely posted here so I hope my suggestions count I saw these 2 films recently and definately think they're worth checking out:
Ryeong (Dead Friend)
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
Both are from Korea and are really good, especially Two Sisters (I think its getting a Hollywood remake). I'd be happy if the majority of Asian horrors got a release here anyways ::crosses fingers:: |

I'd like to add another vote for Tsui Hark's The Blade. Great and unique film, existing R2 dvd infamous for being worse than the equivalent VHS tape, every asian movie related forum has had regular topics asking about a new, decent release of it for years now. The next release this could had, from the looks of it, would be in France with french subtitles only anyway so you have ensured sales.
Another suggestion is Pedicab Driver with Sammo Hung. NO existing dvd version, it has been on limbo for several years as well. Do yourselves and the asian movie fan community a favor and put out a good dvd of this movie, it's another ensured seller with virtually market monopoly for you.
Other than that, what about a special edition of Perfect Blue with anamorphic enhancement ? I can't speak for everybody but I stopped buying non-anamorphic dvds a few years ago, and this movie has been on my want list all this time (but I wouldn't consider the current letterboxed disc).
Thanks. |

Some additional suggestions in no particular order:
Ugetsu Monogatari (Kenji Mizoguchi) - only available in France with forced french subtitles
Sansho Daiyu (Keji Mizoguchi) - unavailable
Suna No Onna (The Woman In The Dunes) - R1 with shorter international version only and japanese DVD too hard and expensive to get - we could use the full director's cut from a western publisher such as EE
I could go on all day listing all these fantastic films that the average mentally handicapped publisher haven't released yet for their mentally handicapped public, so I better stop. I have some hopes for your company based on the quality films you've been releasing. Please give us great asian movie classics such as these ones. Thank you. |

Actually I've been personally pushing Ugetsu Monogatari to be acquired for a while. It's amazing that a film such as this hasn't been released on DVD yet for the English-speaking world.
Some good news though for Mizoguchi fans... National Cinémathèque (in Australia) has just released their schedule for 2005. For 3 weeks from August 24 - September 9 will be a Mizoguchi retrospective, with specific titles to be announced. It'll be an amazing opportunity to see a number of his films on the big screen. Looking forward to it! |

I'm not really sure about who has the rights, etc, of the following titles and for the life of me I can't seem to find anything about them! Anyway, here goes...
Fobidden City Cop and From Beijing With Love - both Stephen Chow movies, of course. I know that FBWL has been released in Australia, but the only version that I've found is dubs only... I despise dubs. At least in live-action movies. Also any other Stephen Chow movies would be good - Shaolin Soccer, God of Cookery, King of Comedy - cause I haven't seen them!
Also I add my vote for the Young and Dangerous series, The Duel and The Storm Riders. |

I only just finished watching these but already I'm in love! I think these would be two excellent titles for Eastern Eye to release here.
Onmyouji (Official site HERE)
Onmyouji II
If you love those mystical sorts of Chinese movies such as Hero and The Storm Riders or drool over the customs (and costumes) of medieval Japan, or both, then this is the perfect movie for you!
During the Heian period (794-1185AD), Onmyouji are the spiritual masters of Japan and are highly sought-after to chase away demons and poltergeists. One of the most powerful of them all - Seimei - has been asked by a new addition to the Imperial Court - Hiromasa - to cleanse a pine tree of its evil spirits (in the form of a huge melon-like fruit). From that point on the problem becomes worse. Now, between jokes, mischief and sake, Seimei and Hiromasa must work together to destroy an age-old curse that could consume them all.
Onmyouji II is the sequel to the original Japanese box-office smash hit and is filled with the same beautiful imagery, playful wit, and impressive sorcery that made the first film such a hit.
Though slightly thin in plot, both movies are stunning - completely drool worthy (Seimei with his hair out in Omyouji II = drool bucket required for the female audience). These two pieces are a MUST for Eastern Eye. _________________ SMAP - singers, dancers, actors, hosts, cooks...

I thought I'd drop in the link for the official Onmyouji trailer here. Please visit the OFFICIAL SITE though for a fuller experience.
Onmyoji Subbed Trailer
I'm serious, Madman - this is an Eastern Eye MUST! I've watched both movies more than twice in the span of a week and I just can't get enough of them! *doesn't want to return the videos* NOOOO!

Ok this movie isn't actually out yet (from what I can work out) but it's never too early to get things underway.... _________________ No longer a fan |

I have a weakness for a good monster movie so I'd like to see:
Casshern
Orochi the Eight Headed Dragon
also
Zipang (no not the animation )
Alive
The Silk Road
There are some others but I will have to go though my Newtype backissues |

I would also like to say Casshern is a great flick and Orochi is definately one of my faves.
I would also like to make a suggestion for NOT aquiring a movie called Gunhed. _________________ No longer a fan |

I'd especially like to see some Kiyoshi Kurosawa titles - Cure (available in R1), Pulse, Doppelganger and Bright Future (available in R1).
Also a new film starring Beat Takeshi - Blood And Bones (Chi To Hone), Shunji Iwai's All About Lily Chou-Chou (available in R1 & R2), Masato Harada's Kamikaze Taxi (available in R1), Miike's new film Izo, and although I intend to order the Criterion editions... Seijun Suzuki's Branded To Kill and Tokyo Drifter would be great to see here.
Some old Kinji Fukasaku Yakuza flicks would be another cool option. |

Yes! It would be nice to see some Kiyoshi Kurosawa films released locally. I've watched Cure and enjoyed it a lot, i'd also like to see Kairo. Izo i'd love to see stateside also One Missed Call and Man in White. Infact anything Miike that Siren havn't got their grubby paws on already. |

After seeing it last night for the first time... Tai Chi Master with Jet Li. One of the best kung-fu flicks I've ever seen with a perfect blend of mindblowing fight choreography and humour... for me something like Shaw Brothers meets Stephen Chow. Classic stuff!!
Had a hunt around on the net but both R1 US & R2 UK releases are English dubbed and of very poor picture quality. |

Look into some Nagisa Oshima films, like Boy, Cermonies/The Ceremony, Gohatto, Night and Fog in Japan, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence etcetera. Some of them would be damn near impossible, though... I don't think there's a DVD version of Boy or Cermonies anywhere in the world. _________________ Drink Milk™, it’s Nature’s Water |

|
|
This Sticky-ed Post "Acquistions Suggestions" is currently undergoing a complete and utter revision. Basically I've been put in charge of making a brand new thread that will be far more organised than this one. The first post will list all the titles that have been requested as well as the amount of requests for each title. Recent acquisitions will be marked as such whilst releases will be deleted off the list. There will also be notes of which titles cannot absolutely ever be released by EE (ie Jackie Chan and Jet Li films) or Madman Cinema.
Please be patient with me whilst I research the current list and sort the titles out.
In the meantime, you can make this process run a hell of a lot smoother by first making sure your title has definitely not been released in Australia (in say the past 10 years) and secondly checking to see if another company already owns the series or the main person starring in it (above ie is rementioned).
Relative websites for Australian release titles include:
http://www.easterneye.com.au/
http://www.madmancinema.com.au/
http://www.sirenvisual.com.au/
Please note this list will also deal with Madman Cinema titles (outside Asia including Russia and India) but they will be bundled separately.
Otherwise, feel free to continue posting until I get the list up. Weblinks would be appreciated because they will also eventually be provided. I promise that everyone's vote has been counted on this list and not one title has been ignored. _________________ SMAP - singers, dancers, actors, hosts, cooks...

Might as well make good use of the <s>strike out tags</s> for those.

Takeshi Kitano's:

Audition, Brother & Ichi The Killer have all been released in R4 by Siren. |

Both of my suggestions are Hideaki Anno films.
- Love & Pop
- Shiki-Jitsu
I want Shiki-Jitsu more then anything in the Eastern-eye catalogue (since of I have most of them anyway.) _________________ 3DS: 4296 - 3062 - 9292
