There are three versions actually.
A black and white series was done in the 1960s. A coloured version done in the 1980s, which Madman are releasing. And the recentlly produced series, which Columbia Tristar are releasing soon.
I've seen a few episodes of the old black and white shows. Animation is a bit static, but the feel of the show is very good.
The 1980's show is the one I grew up with. It's noticably darker than the 1960's show, but is still very good.
Haven't seen an episode of the new series, but I will. _________________ PSN: Dartal1138

I've only seen a little bit of the 2003 series, but I'd like to buy the DVD's when they come out. I'll definitely be buying the collection release of the 1980's series though. _________________ MORE DERP? |

I'd say the 80's one is better, I grew up watching it and from what I remember, it's good. The new one look pretty but it's not enough to keep me watching though ... |

Although I loved Astroboy as a primary school kid in the mid 1980's, I'm a little tired of people automatically declaring that series superior simply because they "grew up with it" and "remember it was pretty good".
I think too many people aren't considering that maybe it won't live up to their memories and are dismissing the new series because they mistakenly think different = bad.
I hope to be able to buy both series and once I've watched some of each, then I can decide which one is better. _________________ MORE DERP? |

I have watched the 80s version and what I could of the latest before I stopped. The 80s version wins. Because it was dark. Because it did not feel like it was made as if to "protect the children". It is in the spirit of the old Brother's Grimm fairy tales. The new Astroboy has all the modern animation and such, but is a spiritual vacuum. The first few episodes of the 80s Astroboy had emotional impact. The first few episodes of the latest Astroboy were "Wheeee! AEWSOEM!!!111eleven~~ I'll get you Gadget next time next time!!!".
Here's an example which someone else will have to verify because I don't watch the new stuff anymore to see if it gets remade. There was an episode in the 80s version where there is a girl robot who is a great big walking bomb. Astro falls for her and tries to save her, but in the end, to stop the bomb, she must "die". Astro accepts it but in memoriam, uses her feet, which were the only components still whole in the dismantling process to deactivate the bomb. It dealt with pain and loss and doing the greater good even if it meant losing the one you love. I doubt I'd see that in the new Astroboy judging by what I've seen, but please, by all means, prove me wrong Sony. |

You might be pleasently suprised if you watched all of the new series. In the second half, a robot is accused of murder, which eventually results in a war between Humans and Robots. Astro, being the hero that he is, is the only one willing to stand up in the middle of the madness and try to put an end to the war.
Now as for which is better, I honestly can't remember much of the 80's series. Just bits and pieces here and there. I'll get the box, re-watch it after having seen the new series, and then I'll get back to you.
You know, when I was growing up, two of my staples were Astroboy and Battle Of The Planets -- and now Madman are releasing both within a month or two of each other. Truely is a great time to be collecting anime. |

I haven't had the luxury of seeing the new series yet and the old one is quite faint in my memory. I am eagerly awaiting November 10th though. _________________ "I can't take his money, I can't print my own money, I have to work for my money. Why don't I just lay down and die." -Homer Simpson |

I have the 80's series on VHS and have watched it several times since it was released, so it is still easily recalled to me. I watched the first 4 episodes of the new series on ABC Kids and stopped watching it regular. I have seen maby another 4 episodes since then.
The fact that I have been an astroboy fan for around 30 years, and I do not care is I miss the new series when it airs has got to say something about its quality.
Another comparison would be the new series has to be the cheapers DVD release out there. $15 for 12 episodes per DVD?? Its almost like they are throwing it away hoping the rediculously cheap price will sway people before they realise the content is nothing like they are hoping.
AstroBoy in the 80's had HEART AND SOUL. The new series, altho not "bad" when compared to such things as Beyblades or other Saturday Morning Anime today, does not come even close to the quality of the 80's series.
I have also seen several episodes of the 60's Astroboy thru tape exchanges, conventions, the NTSC videos etc. This series was also remarkably well done for its time. It is a real shame that a fair amount of these episodes have been lost forever. _________________ XBL | SEN (PSN) | Steam

The Japanese languagee version of the new series apparently is alot better then the English ersion. It apparently feels alot more like the 80's version.
You can buy the boxset of the new Astroboy series in R3. I think it has subtitles and all, released by Columbia Tristar aswell.
If your interested I'll give you the link later on.
Also, Madman might possibly release 60's series if the 80's series sells well. |

The fact that you even compare it to Beyblades, wich is officaly the worst anime ever made. I have seen rotten feces that are better then beyblades. And if that wasnt't bad enough they managed to make it even worse in the new serise when everyone was all chibi and ****...
The new astroboy is cool, I mean everything is all shiny and **** I know that you shouldn't base oppinions of a show on its animation but the animation in the new Astro boy is really above par. Compare it to almost any other serise. Hell even some movies and its above par. The animation was the main thing that sold me on the new astro boy. But that isn't to say that the story line is bad, Its cool too (It aint no Digimon, wich for me wins with saturday morning anime plots) But its not far off. |

I think I would have loved the new series but for 2 things:
1) Astro's new voice....The 80's version sounds much more empathetic, as opposed to the new series. He sounds like a little punk lol
2) I like to call the "poochie" factor. Whats the deal with making cartoon characters look angry 90% of the time so they appear cool.
I guess both of these points mix together, in a very simple conversation astroboy seems to be "angry", but I guess im confusing that for the 110% attitude they have given him. hmmmm |

I'm older then you? Weird...
Strange that you mention Megman, one of the topics of discussion that never fails to come up when me and Shannon are watching Astroboy is who would win between him and Megman.
We determined that Megman would kick Astros arse. |

I've never really been into Astro Boy. I 've seen a couple of episodes of the new series and thought it was okay, but I just can't be bothered with it. I always forget it's on anyway, and my ABC reception is s**t.
And yeah, Megaman would woop Astro in the (tin) can. But the Powerpuff Girls would beat both of them... cause they have Girl Power(tm). |

I just bought the new series...and i am so confused.
The names have changed...Dr Elephant is Dr. O'Shea
And the voices have changed as well.
I think i will always love the original series better...but i will give the new series a go.
Is the old version going 2 be released? _________________ Cause' lately I've been thinking of combustication as a welcomed vacation from, The burdens of the planet earth

I *think* it's because the English version names are now closer to the Japanese.

While I can't remember the whole series, I DO have the first VSH volume of 80's AstroBoy, and I must say I really do prefer to overall "feel" of the seris. it's just a feels a bit more....oh, real.
I was really looking forward to the new series when I got AusStar and they were adbertising it, but found that I just didn't like it. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into it.
I'm also kinda disapointed that None of Astro's family, save his sister, seems to have made it into the new version. Oh and Daddy Walrus has changed from a teacher into what seems to be a private eye, based on the one(bit of a) episode I saw with him for the second season of the new series. (Which I saw when I was either channel surfing, or waiting for Ultimate Muscle to start) _________________ You must show no mercy-

Age showing, all this talk of the new and old version. I grew up in the sixties with the original and all this comparison makes me hesitate to get either of the new versions.
Can anyone who has seen the original comment? |

Nope, wrong.
Doctor Elefun is probably the one you're thinking about. He didn't build Astro, but he "raised" him until Astro was given a robot mother and father to live with.
Daddy Walrus was, I think, one of Astro's school teachers and a believer that robots and humans could co-exist. Therefore he was a strong supporter of Astro's. _________________ MORE DERP? |

IMHO the few episodes of the 2003 series i have watched were visually great but the emotional impact was (as described earlier) without soul..
the Home Alone voice of Astroboy was distracting and not in tune with the character as it lives in my memory
I look forward to Madmans release of 80's Astroboy on DVD and would love to know that a new generation of Astro fans may follow his trials and tribulations... .
Bring on the Original Series...
And i look forward to all youre thoughts after you too have watched (and i have remembered better ) The Mighty Atom. _________________ What doesnt make you strong.. Kills You |

I like the 1980's version or Astroboy better then the new ones that they are showing today.
I had tried to like the new version of astro but it just not the same as the one that i had watched as a kid. |

I grew up with the old Astro, and I'd have to say that in this case older is definatly better.
I loved the old Atlas, the way they made him in Astro's imagine..then later he 'grew up'..I remember him being REALLY evil, the Atlas in this new series seems like a spoit brat, boring...
Then theres the theme song, gotta love that
I used to think the little sister was the cutest thing ever (I cant remember her name, the memory goes on you when you're this old).
Speaking of names, why the heck did they have to go and change the names, that's not right, half the audience is us oldies, so they should set the market for us too..
Okay I've complained enough |

Astroboy is back on TV I'll def check the new series out on thursday.
I rember being full moved as a kid watching one double ep with a robot with big horns that went around killing all these other cool robots to be the most powerful in the world or some crap. Twas very traumatic for me
I just watched the opening scene off the .au site and remember thinking as a kid that the little round things he was carrying were icecreams _________________ My sig |

I would definitely have to say the older series was better and not for nonstalgic reasons. The first few episodes were sad as all hell, and each episode thereafter, even though not as emotive seemed a lot more 'human' than the new series. I get the feeling the new series was a money maker
The new one is aimed at todays youth and obviously its going to change to suit its demographic, but I'm not in that demographic.. haven't been for a loooong long time. Hence why the old one still appeals.
Poor old Toby.

That would be better, but I would still forget it was on, it's this old age thing...Speaking of old, I'll be going with out for for a month to buy myself the Special Edition set... Not cheap but the nostalgia, I think is worth it |

I personally reckon it would've been pretty spiffy if they'd remade the eighties series, cel for cel with the new animation. then it would've had the heart, and the buffed up visuals! _________________ Did someone say EVANGELLYOON?!.....oh...well could they? |
