Mugen’s a buck wild warrior - violent, thoughtless and womanizing. Jin is a vagrant ronin - mysterious, traditional, well-mannered and very strong as well. These two fiercely independent warriors couldn't more different from one another, yet their paths cross when Fuu, a ditzy waitress, saves them from being executed when they are arrested after a violent swordfight. Fuu convinces the two vagrant young men to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sunflowers." And their journey begins.

Out on DVD from March 16th 2005
Available in 2 hip flavas:

Volume 1 - $29.95
Volume 1 with Collector's Box and Bandanna (while supplies last) - $39.95

It's a very cool series, Watanabe does not dissapoint (not me, at least)

Not always as good as it could be, but often far better than it usually is. It has definate high points which become more frequent later in the series.

What remains constant is the excellent animation, and the enduring characters.

I'll be buying it!

17 eps in so-called season 1.
The story is incomplete and continues in season two so that there are 26 eps total. Ep18 aired recently in Japan.

US and Japan production would have caugh t up by then. There might be a 3 month gap between later volumes, but nothing drastic.

Just watched epp 18, god it didn't lose anything over its break. gagagoogoo awsome. Admitedly it was lacking some of the awsome action that it likes to have but it was still a fantastic eppisode. The Andy Warhole reffrence is golden too Very Happy

[EDIT] Just watched 19 HOLY PLOT DEVELOPMENT BATMAN!!
After lots of speculations, almost everyone had come to the conclusion that the sunflower smelling samurai was Fuu's dad, but its finnaly confirmed in this epp

It's not a series that I'm really interested in though that could change over the next few months. Whenever I see an image of Mugen in NTUSA, I'm reminded of Noah Taylor. Seeing them side by side would be very strange.

If there ever happens to be a live action release, then Australia's own Noah Taylor (Mullet, Lara Croft, He Died With A Fallafel in His Hand) could be Mugen.

Probbably not... as great as Noah Taylor is, I still doubt he could pull of Mugen, they might look similar but asside from the fact that he is WAY to old (Mugens 19) I just really doubt he could pull it off... and yes I know that was more just thinking out loud then serious speculation of a live action version but thats beside the point Very Happy

I found the first DVD quite good. Serious but with humour intermixed can be a tough thing to pull off but I think they've done it quite well. The animation is also quite good -especially the night scenes.

just got my copy yesterday, and am happy to say i have been swept up in the magic and brillant animation which is "samurai champloo" i'm amazed at this show, though the first ep did seem to be a peg above the other 3 (like with most new series, catch em with ep 1)

but i'm waiting eagerly for the other volumes.

so what was everyones take on the opening and ending songs, the opening didn't seem to be to my likeing but i did like the ending

I read the first issue, apart from the fact that its plot goes completly diffrent to the show (The whole thing with Jin and Mugen being captured doesn't happen, it goes straight from the tea house fight to them leaving) I thought it was pretty averge. One of my fave things about Champloo is the mood set by the show coupled with amazing animation wich is completly lacking from the manga.

Quote:

I absolutly love the intro song. The ending song is pretty mediocer. Although the ending sequence does give out hints to the plot.

Oh and just to be forewarned. The plot pretty much stagnates till around epp 11. It gets into a verry formulaiec routine of them meeting an enemy, and fighting etc. But if you hold out for that little slump it pays off big time when you hit around epp 11 wich is one of the best epps of the entire show (Excluding the Mugen-centric two parter)

The intro took some getting used to -not as strange as Paranoia Agent's though. I do think a more upbeat song for the start would be better placed.

I quite liked the ending as many of the endings in the first DVD are semi-serious in their own way so I think the music suits it well there.

Strange, I thought the pace for the intro song suited the show pretty well. I really think a faster intro song would kind of kill the mood a bit for alot of the show. The show isn't a verry fast show, the plot develops really slowly, I mean it took like 17 eppisodes for you to find out who the sunflower samurai was. Ahh crap, I meant to say 11 in my other post, the show gets alot better at eppisode 11 not 17 Very Happy *goes to fix his mistake*
