Can anyone help?? I need some serious advise on what Anime to buy. Im a huge fan of old school anime like, Golgo 13, Cyber City Oedo 808, Wicked City, Devilman...... well you get the gist. While I enjoy series like RahXephon I feel these dont have exactly what Im looking for. Im after: action packed, scifi, cyberpunk, horror and just generally off beat brain bending series that are rated M 15+ up to R18. Any suggestions would be majorly appreciated. Confused

For horror, you may like Hellsing. For cyberpunk, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex *may* qualify...

If you can import then Demon Lord Dante is one to have a look at.

It looks similar to those mentioned.

I think that Getter Robo Armageddon would be right up your alley.

May qualify? If it were any more cyberpunk it would have a 1980s synth-rock soundtrack and Kenichi Sonoda haircuts. Razz

If you liked Wicked City, you'd probably like Ninja Scroll (I heard the same animator or producer made it).

I'm surprised no one mentioned Bubblegum Crisis yet (The OVA and the T.V series) and try A.D Police. Perhaps even Patlabor it's not really cyber punk or brain bending but it's definatly old school and a great watch. If you want brain bending try somthing like FLCL, Boogiepop Phantom or Lain.

It's cyber but not very punk.

I'd recommend Tokyo Babylon to you devilman.

it could still be set in the "cyberpunk" {rpg ni_jal injoyed that game} realms
it would just have large tracks of corporate zone / corporate suburbias / corporate farming

I bought Wicked City when I heard that the makers of Ninja Scroll (the movie) had been involved in it, but I found the movie disappointing; especially the ending. Only the images of the two movies are held in common in my eyes. That and the violence against women.

You want Sci/Fi, horror, action and brain-twisters?

Check out some of my favourites:
Animatrix (some of the short films make you think)
Hellsing (undying sadists, protestants vs catholics...? Yes!)
Jin-Roh
Neon Genesis Evangelion (it gets darker as it progresses)
Ninja Scroll (the movie)
Samurai X (OVA) - a few samurai action gems in this one
Spriggan (a bit like Akira)

Happy hunting!

Cyber City Oedo 808 has been re-released in the US recently with the original Japanese soundtrack (Cyber City: The Final Collection), so if you had watched the series previously in the 90s on VHS, and love the cyberpunk music, just be aware that music is not on the DVD.

Not that there is anything wrong with the original Japanese music; but Cyber City Oedo 808 was one of the very first anime I watched and I fell in love with the music - I think that was how I got into collecting anime soundtracks. I'm glad I've kept my VHS copy of the series which had the alternative music....

By the way, does anyone know if there was ever a DVD release with the alternative soundtrack?
