I have the R1 of the first volume, and the video quality is really really bad (dot crawl, blurriness, jagged lines). If Madman's DVDs are of better quality I'll get them as well.

Originally airing in 2003, the transfer for this series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. The materials here for the most part are pretty good but the series does suffer in a few areas, some quite noticeable. One of the most blatant areas and one that made me leery of the release in general was the opening shot when the Japanese logo comes up with all of the dot crawl all around it. This actually lessens with each episode, so much that the third and fourth episodes barely display any, but it wasn't the best way to open things up. There's also a fair bit of cross coloration in small areas throughout the episodes along with some shimmering lines from areas where the artwork is very tight, such as the opening of the cart where Pacifica continually sticks her head out of. The best way to find this is the simply watch the shot of the cart in the menu itself and then watch the same areas in the show and you'll see it. The shows colors in general look really good with the backgrounds and they mostly maintain a solid feel though there are some occasions where the gradient becomes more pronounced than it should.

By the way Sly, is there a mock-up of the box available yet?

I measured it, it's 31cm.

I don't think we'll get the figures because the way the figure was packaged for the first volume, it wouldn't fit in our collector's box.

Should be six volumes. The series is 24 episodes and I don't think Bandai is the type to artificially drag a series beyond six discs.

well i must say it sounds like it'll be a good series, though that image quality thing is making me abit iffy about purchasing this series.

on a side note, for those who have seen the series, what are the OP's and ED's like?

Really good.

The OP is performed by JAM Project.

The ED is performed by Oranges & Lemons, who also did the Azumanga Daioh OP and ED, and, in a slightly different form, the Haibane Renmei ED.

thanks StorminNorman, nice to know the series has a good OP and ED, since when i watch an anime a bad one will kinda ruin the experiance for me.

hmm if we don't get the models, which i doubt we will, i wonder if madman will have some other goodies for us?

The plot/story will really support this series. Art work is important, but do not let "image quality" hold you back.

I think some people are blowing the image quality issue out of proportion. Read the snippet I posted above and you'll notice the problem isn't that bad. The reviewer didn't even feel the need to mention it in summing up his review.

I, for one, will definitely be picking up this title in July. Very Happy

The image quality was fine when I watched it. There is some colour bleeding on the logo, but I think that's mostly because it's that awful orange colour, and being displayed on a blue background.

that's good to hear, i was imagining this image that would cause your eyes to shrivil and fall out (kinda like watching the talking scenes in Tales of Symphonia)

but this is deffinantly a series i'll be getting, i don't wan't to let abit of (potential) poor image quality stop me from getting a good anime.

To quote the AoD review again: "...the Japanese logo comes up with all of the dot crawl all around it. This actually lessens with each episode, so much that the third and fourth episodes barely display any...".

so most likely the 2nd and up volumes will show no poor image quality, that being said it all depend if madman's will have the same problem, the imagery may have been dvd specific or madman will get a different version or fix it.

I finally got my copy of vol 1 with box/figurine and couldn't believe the size of it. Looks twice the size of my Black Escaflowne figurine from my ltd ed R1 box.

Definitely the Op Name is glarish and a slight fuzzyness just into ep 1. Besides that there was no problem and have found myself enjoying it greatly. Mizuho's (Please Teacher/Twins) english VA is that of Racquel and Tsume (Wolf's Rain) VA is Shannon.

I'm definitely looking forward to vol 2 which I'll get with the figurine.Very Happy

I couldn't believe the size either, its huge.

I've watched the first 2 episodes and so far its great and I recon the dub voices suit them.

already got V2 with figure ordered Very Happy

Does Leo appear in volume one? He's voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, who I thought was awesome as The Prince in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time [videogame]. Since Leo seems to have a few similarities, I'm really looking forward to Yuri's performance. Very Happy

Leo appears in ep 2 (the march of the half-baked Knight) and I must say, his dub is quite good. Some of his lines are quite amusing. another good performance is Michelle Ruff who did the dub for Winia. Overall the dub for this is quite good, its just as mentioned already some of the voices are too similar to previous roles ^_^;

Definitely a series I am going to collect the DVDs. In my opinion the animation is jaw-dropping beautiful. Interesting mix of fantasy/medieval setting and sci-fi. Just a great show overall I reckon.

July purchase vol 1 + box pencilled in.

The nice aspect is the trailer and first parts of the series will really draw you into a magical world. Then sit back and enjoy.

Just an update.

The reversible cover for this will be of the Japanese logo and a clean cover with no ratings!

Despite the fact I am importing to get my hands on those figurines, I can't pass up what Madman appears to be offering. I'll probably collect Madman's as well. This is a most awesome and worth series.

...I am SERIOUSLY waiting for me to get a Zefiris figurine... that girl rocks

I watched the 4 first episodes last sunday and I loved Scrapped Princess. I sugest that anime to everyone.
Very Happy

I think that is interesting that the anime is based at a novel and not at a manga. I will buy the novel when tokyopop launch it.

The trailer for this looks great. Really good looking art/characters.

I'm interested in the figurines and noticed on Amazon there is one which comes with Vol 1 Box and another one with Vol 2 Box. Does anyone have a photo of Vol 2's?

For some reason this anime (I've seen it all) reminded me alot of 'Berserk' (without the crappy ending) - well it was mainly the setting that was Berserk-esque.

Watched volume one this evening and thought it was great. Dub fans will enjoy this show because all the main and secondary characters are well cast and acted. Can't wait to see more. Very Happy
