A theatrical run is expected later this year. Followed usually around 3-4 months later by the DVD release.

<- is happy

Looks like the Appleseed I remember was an OVA from 1988. A new one was made last year, so WoHoo! this is obviously the one going to theatres later in the year here. Apparently (the internet said so, so it must be true) there are plans for an AppleSeed 2, as well as an Appleseed TV.

Looking forward to all of this with much looking-forward-to-ness.

So, with the ball rolling in the appleseed world again, any chance of getting the 1988 OAV out on DVD? You know.. to sort of tie in with the new stuff?

Stormin, pls let us know your impressions when U get to watch that DVD you got ok Smile Actually, would not mind a piccy of the toy either, if you would be so kind! Smile

I bought an R1 import copy of it and watched it last weekend. I also have the full set of Appleseed manga to compare it to. I've never seen the 80's OAV so I can't comment on that version at all.

The manga is in four volumes and the new Appleseed movie basically covers the first two volumes of the manga, so there's definately material available for a sequal. Whether there will actually be a sequal is another matter entirely.

The movie plot has some significant changes in it compared to the manga. I won't spoil but some of the principal characters in the movie either don't exist in the manga or have very different roles when comparing the movie to the manga. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, how many movie adaptations of books/manga stay 100% acurate? Not many.

The one issue of the movie that I disliked the most wasn't plot related, it was the way the characters look. The characters were all rendered in 3D, but then they were coloured/shaded/textured to try to look more like 2D, and in many scenes the colouring/shading/texturing of the characters looks very odd and to my eye out of place, especially skintones and the textures of clothing. Here's a link to a review with screenshots. Have a look at the skintones and shadow shading of the characters, particularly Deunan's face in the third pic. http://dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=57174

I realise the production crew weren't trying to go for pseudo-realism like Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within tried to, I can accept semi-3D characters in fully 3D backgrounds, but a bit more attention to detail with the colouring/shading of the characters in Appleseed would have helped them sit much more convincingly within the 3D backgrounds.

I suppose I'm really just nitpicking here. All things considered I enjoyed Appleseed enourmously. If they don't do a sequal to cover the remainder of the Appleseed manga, I'd like to see Orion done instead. Orion is another work by the Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell creator, Shirow Masamune.

I watched the R2 version that my friend imported from Japan. As I'm not a big fan of Appleseed, I can't compare this movie with any of the previous ones. When the anime started, I thought it was GITS 2. The 3D background was on par with GITS 2.

But as GarethB said, the characters do look a bit "odd". The characters don't seem to fit in with the surrounding background. But other than that, I thought the anime was okay. But as I said, I'm not a fan of Appleseed. Maybe Appleseed fans will get more out of it.

I've seen the film before, and it's pretty good. I've never read the manga (shame on me), though, so I can't make that comparison.

I love the cel-shaded style they use in this... it's similar to Platonic Chain, if you're familiar with that. The mecha CG is probably the best ever in an anime. The film has a bangin' OST, too.

My only complaint is that the whole package came in one of those sealed plastic packages that you have to physically destroy to get inside (like what XBox controllers and PS2 memory cards come in).

This movie rocked my socks right off my feet. It was that good. I've read the old manga, relased in the early 90's by Dark Horse, so I looked forward to the new release. The metal case Madman released is brilliant, and I wouldn't mind seeing more titles released like this, although I guess it's expensive.

As for the film itself; awesome awesome awesome. It manages to blend CG with anime really well, resulting in a nice cell-shaded feel. The action scenes are amazing, especially the finale.

And the soundtrack includes Basement Jaxx and Paul Oakenfield, and works really well with the film.

My only dissapointment is that the film takes a different direction to the manga, making everything shiny and modern, whereas the manga had an old-school, 80's, cyber-punk feel to it. While this doesn't make the movie bad, it just doesn't come across as being as Shirow as say Ghost in the Shell.

I'm looking forward very eagerly to news of a sequel and/or TV series.

The old OVA was a little closer to the original manga. The up and coming TV series and second movie will likely be further original tales, with a little influence from the manga.

There is a 26 episode series and a second movie announced for next year. The second movie has the same director, so will likely be of the same style (which I personally think it overrated). They are both expected around the middle of the year.

Any word if the series will have the same CG as the Movie(s) Because i just can't imgine the seires animated.

Good to hear though, i'm just a tad iffy about what direction they'll take the show in.

Very little has been announced about the series. I am hoping for something like STAND ALONE COMPLEX, but who knows at this stage.

Would be nice if Shirow continued on with manga from volume 4 + DATA BOOK.

I found that APPLESEED manga what much better than GITS manga. Better character development. And the techno-babble was much more believable.

I finally went and bought MM's ltd ed 2dvd tin box for the movie. I did have it ordered for the R1 last year, but was unable to get the ltd ed release with the figurine. Sad

The movie reminded me a bit of the animation that Disney's Robots movie had, but I have to say that Appleseed was very nicely done.

I hope that they do the 2nd Appleseed movie in the same style as this one since it has pretty much blown me away.
