I though this would be a good thread to start to let everyone talk about their bad experiences with anime. For me it has to be Heay Guy J, this anime absolutely sucked and no matter how hard I tried I just couldn't get into it. What are some of your crappy anime you though would be good?

Hmmm, there's been a few of those.

Aquarian Age, Kiddy Grade and Argento Soma come immediately to mind.

I personally don't see what was wrong with Heat Guy J, but meh, that's your opinion. However, I was dissapointed with:

Comic Party (Revolution is a whole lot better IMHO)
Kiddy Grade
Geneshaft
Rurouni Kenshin
Blood
Hikaru no Go

Love Hina. I guess expecting another Maison Ikkoku is too much to ask, these days.

Kiddy Grade is definitely another. I really thought this would at least be a passable Dirty Pair knockoff. Turns out it wasn't even a passable Dirty Pair flash knockoff.

Dirty Pair Flash, because it wasn't a passable Dirty Pair knockoff, either. I tried re-watching this recently (because, unlike Dirty Pair TV, YOU CAN BUY THIS CRAP ON DVD), but it still sucked.

Narutaru. It would be a great show if it wasn't so damn creepy.

Sakura Diaries. The idea of a non-hentai U-jin anime is a good one, but Sakura Diaries isn't a good series. The total lack of an ending (seriously, His And Her Circumstances has a better ending) kills it, too.

Berserk. They must have shot the entire production crew after they finished the first episode, because its a million times better than the rest of the series. I gave up after ten episodes, mostly because I was too stupid to realise this.

Please Twins. I guess expecting another Please Teacher was too much. Oh well.

You've possibly missed the point of the show.

Add these two to my list, too.

i haven't. I understand what it's about. I just find it really unsettling to watch, and, because of that, I don't like it as much as I'd like to.

Seriously, those Dragonet things give me nightmares.

His & Her Circumstances was nowhere near as great as it was made out to be. I wouldn't quite say it sucked, but it was close.

Kiddy Grade. Character artwork is good but the rest is turgid.

Hint 1: things get boring quickly when your "heroes" are all powerful and rip through enemy armadas singlehandedly from episode one.

  • Kiddy Grade
  • Galaxy Angel (still only part way through volume 2)
  • Comic Party
  • Magic Knight Rayearth (much too kiddy for my liking)
  • Saber Marionette J to X (I liked the original and again)
  • Sol-Bianca
  • Those Who Hunt Elves (first volume was OK)
  • Tenamonya Voyagers (absolute worst show I've ever seen)
And I always get flamed for this, but I really didn't like Crest of the Stars.

There's been so many that I can't even remember them anymore. One that I do remember was Gundam Wing, because in my early days as an anime fan I had waited a long time to see this one. When I finally did get to see it (more than a year later) I couldn't make myself like it no matter how hard I tried.

Now, I'm more careful about which anime I try out, and the level of my expectations vary from series to series (depending on how much I like the genre and the creative powers backing it).

I bought Arjuna (1 disc at a time.... what was i thinking) and i have only ever watched the whole thing once. I enjoyed the music immensely however i never ever ever was able to get into it.

I was also disappointed with final fantasy unlimited. tisk tisk.

To be honest the first anime (non-kiddie) anime i ever watched was Akira on VHS, DVD's weren't really popular at that point, and it killed the whole anime thing for me. the original eng. dub (the rental copy wasn't available in Japanese.) was soooooo bad, i hated it. And on one movie i hated anime. (until Trigun - thanx Vash/johnny young bosch - voice of Kuneda). oh and now i own Akria and think it's great, it's amazing what good voice acting can do.

Two words: Gundam Seed

For as long as I can remember, I keep hearing about Gundam and how great it was (plus all those other ones Wing etc.. I could never work out which was which)

Then I read that Seed was going to be a retelling of the story (of sorts) So I desided to see what all the hype was about.

Let me put it this way, anyone interested in buying a Gundam Seed Vol 1 DVD. Only played once.

Another one is Geneshaft

From what I read, it was going to be sort of 2001/2010 but with rings. But I don't know, it fell very short.. the deside to continue collecting it is very low, maybe when I have a LOT of money to burn hehehe.

I was burned by Arjuna too. The trailer was really good and the music sounds brilliant, well it is Yoko Kanno, but it bit the big one. The moment I realised this was that bit after the first battle where they talk about if only people would use 20% less air conditioning in the summer this could all be avoided. I was half-expecting them to look out of the TV and say, "This means you, B!tch!"

I mean, I agree, but geez a little bit of subtlety please.

Other than that I've been lucky.

There's a couple of people I want to flame here, but I won't.
*cough*Adrianw*cough*Angel_Cop_Fan*cough*

But on topic, I've seen many series that meet this criteria. Hikaru no Go definately seemed good at the start, but then quickly gre boring. I had the same promblem with GitS:SAC. Great series, but just got too talky towards the end of the series. Even I need the occasional bit of action to hold my attention. Another BIG one is Ah/Oh! My Goddess. I finally succumbed to the peer pressure of the madboarders and watched this one (mostly to get ni_jal off my back about it Razz), and I can now honestly say that I would have preffered the insessent urging to watch it over the horror of actually having seen it (BTW, I've seen the movie, the first DVD, and the first ep of the remake). There are others, but I'll leave it here.

Excel saga...... I mean wtf? crappeh or what.

Noir.... started off great and then all talk and fell apart after the first ep. Then it got alright at the very end.

Wasn't there only four episodes of that? I must admit it was etremely repetitive, making it annoying.

Mine is .hack//sign. After my brother going on about how good it was, and that i should watch it, i did. After two episode (i think) i realised it was boring and have to deal with said brother go on and on about it. The music is pretty, and the art is nice, i just think the story was too slow for me.

Berserk - The non-ending killed it
Lain
NGE - The ending killed it
Trigun - The ending killed it
His And Her Circumstances - The non ending killed it
Cowboy Bebop

There are a lot of others, but I can't be bothered with naming them. As for Gundam SEED, the first 2-3 vols suck but gets better after that.

Kiddy Grade
People told me it would pick up after episode 8, my question to them is: how far after ep8?

Cosplay Complex
Doesn't completely suck, but nowhere near as good as I'd heard.

Love Hina
Loved it when it first came out, but after reading the manga I just can't go back to the anime.

Someday's Dreamers
The idea of the story appealed to me at first.... but it just dragged on and on... far too slow to be interesting.

I believe the reaction of the creators to that would be "mission accomplished"

This one's going to require some real flaming.

BGC 2040. I had high hopes for this and the first few episodes were pretty good but in the end I found myself rather dissapointed.

I know it's manga, but... Dragon Knights. I bought it thinking it might be like Slayers (which I love), but I didn't enjoy it. The art is pretty and a few jokes made me laugh, but most of the battles (and plotlines in general) left me asking WTH? What just happened?

(probably just as well that I didn't get hooked on it, though, seeing as it goes for something like 17 volumes...)

I second that. It wasn't really 'attention grabbing' material.

If, however, you are talking about the 'Tales of the Meiji' arc, then I could be a bit more sympathetic. Compared to the rest of the series (especially 'Legend of Kyoto'), it really didn't have all that much.

Another one would be PowerDOLLS. It was good, but seriously it looks and feels like it is missing a MASSIVE amount of story, an I've only seen the bit in the middle.

X: The Movie and Ninja Ressurection are the two main ones for me. I was lied to and new better about the latter. Sequel my arse.

I only ever saw the first disk of Arjuna. Amazing music from Yoko Kanno, but otherwwise lacklustre.

Tekken was just... crap. I mean, the Tekken games aren't that great, but still, even they deserved better than this.

And after reading the Hellsing manga, I can safely add the anime to this list.

God hindsight is great.

Fruits Basket. I watched the first disc... it wasn't bad, but it certainly didn't make me want to run out and watch the next one. Ditto for Fushigi Yuugi.

Oh, and Noir. It started off good, got boring, got good again, then went completely blah (the rate they wipe out the supposably elite soldiers in the last few episodes put me right off- and from what I can see, Madlax follows this philosophy, so put that one down as suckage too).

No, no, no - Fushigi Yugi is one of my favourites, very much a "just-one-more-episode" kind of show, great characters, even better story. And the same can be said about Fruits Basket.

.hack//sign, Dead Leaves, Metropolis, Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemi, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Ghost in the Shell (movie).
I had high expectations of all of those and each one fell short, by a mile.

Could you please elaborate on what exactly you disliked about .hack and Metropolis? I personally loved both, but it's always good to have another POV to help open one's eyes.
I think I'll add InuYasha to my list. When I first saw it I thought "Swords and sorcery! YAY!!!" Then it dragged on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on amd on and on and on and on.... I hear some people have the same prob with Kenshin, but I haven't reached that point yet (still watching Ledgend of Kyoto).

.hack had me screaming at the screen "get on with it!" I didn't care about any of the characters either.
Maybe if I had a longer attention span and/or was a gamer, I would have liked this more.

Metropolis just....left me blank. There was just something (I'm not sure what) missing that kept me from liking it.

ditto on kiddy grade... lost interest after second disk

arjuna... the trailer got me.. damn that was the only thing good about it

geneshaft.. I heard good things about it.. hard sci-fi and all that but got to the last disc and went bleaaahhh

gad guard. still following thru and watching each disc but with less and less enthusiasm.. fast forward button engaged.

p.s. funny though.. some of the series above people did not like I did not mind at all. Real Bout High School has a stupid premise but I enjoyed it. Hack sign was a bit slow but I did not lose interest, I don't rate it very highly but I won't say that it sucked either.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this yet.
Twilight of the Dark Master
Now, definitely not my kind of anime to begin with, but this was horrible. Random sex, violence and demons. Never watching it again.

Earth Girl Arjuna
Yeah, music was excellent, but the rest of it was pretty poor.

Trigun
Vash has to be one of the most ANNOYING characters ever concieved. Found it very boring.

.hack//sign
Concept was good, Tsubasa was a wimp, Mimiru complained too much, what more can I say? Didn't like it at all.

Akira / Ninja Scroll / Ghost in the Shell
Anime Classics my a$$, if they were my introductory to anime I'd have never continued watching.

As for Kiddy Grade, when does the boxset come out?

Comic Party? i dont think it sucked, although the ending did somewhat, but i rate Happy lesson better than it

after sometime for both series to sink in and other purchases, Comic Party isnt sucky but its not great either, its average

I have to agree with you on that, somewhat. It wasn't as great as I expected it to be. Not really a 'classic' in my books.

Disagrees completely on this note. These titles still hold high rankings despite the number of times I've seen them (approximately 20 each in about 4-5 years, excluding Trigun which I am yet to own (seen 3 times in the past year))

Um 'Please Teacher' sure fan service is mildly good but story sux and the stand still BS and I hate the weak male characters, was the worst anime I've seen, I think.

Kiddy Grade.

I won't lie I thought it was going to be really good after seeing the trailer (probably one of the better trailers I've seen). But I just didn't like the show.
