If you took this job, you'd work in the Madman studios wouldn't you? Which is in Victoria? I live in QLD
*EDIT* Also, where do we get the images for the designs from? Google image search, or is there a more professional method? _________________ I have a blog! (it helps if you imagine it in Martin Luther King's voice) |

Likely you would work in Vic, and probbably have to cover your own expenses to get there.
as for image designs, well if you're talking about yourself, well, thats up to you. if you're talking about madman, it's usually comes with the license, so they get sent some stuff and mix it up if it's allowed. _________________ Densha Otoko Is My Hero!!!

I gotta admit, I'd love to have a job at Madman, but what are the chances of them hiring a 16y/o who is still at school =P
Hopefully in a few years there'll be a position similar to this one open, because I'd definitely try. |

anyways, if i had any sort of skill in illustrator (i haven't touched it in like.. 2 years), i'd probably apply for this job, tho with the way my brain works, i'm probably more suited to the credit guy position...
i'll fire off both applications and see what happens _________________ www.madman.com.au/fanservice - when we said to get a grip, we didn't mean THIS

Oh damn damn damn.
Would be the perfect job for me, I have every skill listed there, including 'desireables' (cept I'm halfway through my design course).
But I am, of course, studying in Sydney.
Poo.
Well if you need more recruits in two years time, I'll apply
I'll need a job when I move to Melb, and I'm currently a graphic designer/design co-ordinator, cept it's for a toy production company.

I must say, this has really caught my attention. I've got all the skills (almost finished my Diploma of Multimedia), AND I live in Melbourne. I might just put in an application; what have I got to lose, eh? I'll need to put a proper folio together, but that shouldn't be too hard.
Just let me ask this: are you looking for previous experience (specifically, actually in the workforce)? I've produced a website and I'm currently working on another one, but I haven't worked for a design firm or anything like that. _________________ (You can have your cake) XOR (You can eat your cake) |

We're not specifically looking for prior experience in the workforce but it is a benefit. Your personality and the quality of your folio will also be factors for consideration. |

I'd be well suited for such a job. I believe so, anyway.
I'll hold out though for this one, I think. I haven't got a degree or diploma as such. I've completed HSC Multi-media. My project is the link in my signature.
If I were to apply and get the job, I'd mostly like to work on their advertisement designs.
I also did work experience with the commercial Graphic Designer who lives a few houses up. From my experience there I can tell you its a fast job.
Anyone think I should apply? _________________ 3DS: 4296 - 3062 - 9292

That's quite an impressive ethic to have. Most impressed indeed.
Too bad I'm not a junior designer, otherwise I'd apply. But then most of my background is in Corporate ID and Advertising.
That site isn't bad TheGreatNinjaFanBoy, so just go for it. After all you never know. |

A vaguely related question here:
Do Madman graphics designers perform DVD authoring as well? Or does Madman employ a specialist for DVD authoring and a designer who creates the menu/video graphics? _________________ Overused memes. |

Since the images/logos and probably type are supplied/settled on, how much room for creativity is there for a designer working at MM? _________________ I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes. XP It would have been nice to contact the people who applied, even if they didn't get the job. I've been hanging out for a reply since I sent in my app.
EDIT: ...okay, I just saw the dates for this position and realized that the info that I got was for the same position, but the dates were May 1st - May 10th. >.< Just ignore me. _________________ Mmmm.......gotta love those butch women in anime...Integral...Haruka...Zorin...mmm... |

"No news" == "You didn't get it".
This is standard.
Sometimes, you might get a letter. If there weren't that many applicants, and you got vaguely close, and the employer is feeling particularly nice. It's a favour, an act of generousity, not something you should expect.
Telephone calls are unheard-of [heh], because they say nothing that can't be said in the letter, cost about the same or somewhat more, and you don't have loopy people yelling at the poor unfortunate phone-jockey.
So: No news is bad news. |

that's crap....given that an applicant has spent a great deal of time submitted a CV and covering letter - not to mention portfolio. How hard is it to do a standard letter that advised they were not successful - letter template - name and address, that's all it is? bah. _________________ A belief in the majoritarian parliamentary votes, sustained by nothing more than triennial visits of citizens to the ballot box, with uncontrolled power thereafter, is an infantile conception of a modern democracy. It's standard practice, in my experience... I've never actually heard of someone receiving a letter of decline, apart from applying at big places (ie casual work at Target, I received a "we'll keep your resume for the future" letter). Especially for designers, since they can get 50+ applicants (and thats just in Canberra, I have nfi how big the market is in Melbourne).
I think if you're posting a reply to a thread on the companies website to find out if you got the job, you're not very serious about getting it. |

Why don't you work the numbers out for yourself? It's not actually that hard.
It takes about twenty minutes, minimum, to write a letter that sucks sufficiently little that to recieve it is less insulting than to recieve nothing at all. Allowing for wages and other employment expenses [heating, lighting, super, workcover, depreciation or lease costs on office equipment, etc etc etc], you'd be looking at a minimum of twenty dollars. even for a minimum-wage peon.
That's the fixed cost. Over and above that you have the costs of entering all the names in a mailmerge database [One a minute, once you've allowed for finding the address on the CV or wherever it's hidden. If you're lucky][$1/person], postage [in bulk, something like 30c/letter], printing & depreciation [ say 5c letter, and 15c for the envelope sticker], folding the letters [10/minute, so 10c], sticking on the sticker [5/minute, so 20c], putting them in the envelopes [and making sure they're right] 10/minute [10c]. And carrying them to the post-office, but you're going to do that anyway so it doesn't count.
Hmm, $1 + 0.3 + 0.05 + 0.15 + +0.10 + 0.20 + 0.10 == $1.9 /applicant, plus $20 fixed cost.
Assume twenty candidates [this is not terribly many, and they probably got twice that, min]... gives you a cost of about sixty dollars. As a back-of-the-envelope calculation, minimum. Realistically, you'd be looking at nearer to a hundred to allow for debugging the mailmerge and other double-checking.
I would be suprised if the clear profit on a DVD exceeded a dollar-fiftym, so we're looking at the clear profit of at least forty DVDs. How many DVDs would you buy to pay the cost of sending out these letters? |

The 20 cost is reduced on each subsequential use of the document(so say 6 jobs a year - 3.33 is a more realistic case). The value of the letter is not only for the applicant but also for the company; How so? Social Capital - the cost to a company in term of loss of social capital often translates into a monentry figure far exceeding the small cost that it would have worn if it had responded in some manner to say - sorry you didn't get the job. Numbers being through around suggest that if you annoy 1 person - they will voice their displeasure to 9 other people - who then speak to others etc etc. Also given that email is becoming the norm for alot of job applications, the higher costs of physical mail is becoming less of an issue (personally I still think it's better to offer a hard copy letter, esp on nice paper)
Maybe I just expect more employers. _________________ A belief in the majoritarian parliamentary votes, sustained by nothing more than triennial visits of citizens to the ballot box, with uncontrolled power thereafter, is an infantile conception of a modern democracy. Michael Kirby |

The employer shouldn't need to coddle their prospective employees with contacting them. It's the job of the person applying for the job to stand out and shout "hey, you want to hire me!" If you don't have the initiative to contact them then you don't deserve the job. You have to please them, not the other way around... |

How does this even address what I was suggesting earlier? Do you even acknowlegde the existence of social capital and the value it has to an organisation? Those people who submitted folios and applications did standout and shout "Hey, you want to hire me" when compared to those who did not apply. I guess, the point I am trying to make is that if I was in such a position to be asking for applicants to apply for a job and I was applying for a job I would expect an organisation to have some social responsibilities follow through on - like acknowledging someone's application. Hell, I applied for jobs where they send you a letter to advised that they have recieved your applications and then they also send out a letter saying you have been unsuccessful. Some just send out a letter of acknowledging the application and then advise that if you do not hear back within 2 weeks you have been unsuccessful. Guess it won't matter in the future though with Howard's workplace reforms - if you work for in a company with less that 100, well you got six month probation in which they can fire you without any recourse unless it was clearly discriminatory. _________________ A belief in the majoritarian parliamentary votes, sustained by nothing more than triennial visits of citizens to the ballot box, with uncontrolled power thereafter, is an infantile conception of a modern democracy. I think that when these threads are made and positions are filled that either the thread should be locked or the title should be edited to include something along the lines of "POSITION FILLED". |
