At Last! EzyDVD is reporting a June 22 release for volumes 7 and 8 of the new season, as well as a June 22 release for the entire season 2. That's all I know at this point, but I'm hoping the season 2 cases in the box are NOT slim covers.

Yeah, I noticed this.

Altho I doubt Iwill ever get this series (not in its curent release, anyway) at least those who wish to get it can now finish their sets with the widescreen Version instead of that horrid R1 box set. *shudder*

I am lead to believe that the KOREAN release of the new Astro Series does indeed(tm) include English Subs, for those interested in seeing it as close to unaltered as possible.

Can anyone out there confirm this?

I've got individual volumes 7 & 8 on order because I'm wary of the box set. I'll try to find out more if possible and change my order if the box set is indeed from episode 25 to the end.

I just want them to have the same looking cases as volumes 1-6

It most certainly does contain English subtitles (with Japanese dialogue and the Korean dub and subs). Unfortunately they're being as slow as hell releasing the DVDs. They're only up to episode 24 which was released in December. I wouldn't expect Columbia Tristar Korea to release the next three DVDs (about another 12 episodes) until June or so.

The second season set you mentioned could actually be a full series set. FBO lists it as the complete series and the few sites that I've seen it listed at say 5 discs - much like the recently-released R1 set...

Wow I hope so!

I'd get the full season as a set (despite the horrible edits) if it was anamorphic widescreen.

That'd mean we'd have something great over the American release.

Now, if only Sony felt enough pressure from Madman to release this sucker in a tin box.

Somehow I think not.

Doh! A quick check revealed it is most likely only the 2nd half;

I really hope there's no truth to EzyDVD's claim that the whole second season is only two discs... Shocked

If you follow my link above you'll see it's been updated today to say the release is 5 discs and contains the entire series which is great, plus the price is nice too.

However, the aspect ratio is yet to be confirmed and that's the most important part for me!

BTW about Belle & Sebastian, I could go on for hours about how great that show is and how badly it needs a release. I think I have in other threads too! I will only be truly happy when it, The Yearling, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Ulysses 31 and The Mysterious Cities Of Gold are released here.

Ahhh we can dream.

Unfortunately, I think we'll be getting the same set the Americans got. The page at EzyDVD now shows box art identical to the R1 [with OFLC rating added]. Not to mention every site says it'll be 5 discs [like the R1 set]. I'm not interested in ten episodes per disc or a cropped image, so I'll be sticking with the individual volumes.

Gosh I'm keen to know more about this set. I totally agree with your comment above this one, no widescreen = no purchase.

Frankly it's insulting of Sony to think we'd suffer a cropped image.

Yet for the R1 release they use it as an advertising tool!

Astroboy is mainstream, marketed to the masses who don't know better.

Hang on -- so is the aspect ratio for the box set not the same as the individual releases...? Have they squeezed ten eps onto each disc and cropped them...?

The box set released in USA features a full-frame aspect ratio and contains five discs. Based on the box art shown at EzyDVD, I'm guessing we'll get the same thing here. The R4 individuals are four episodes per disc and in the original widescreen aspect ratio.

I will add my 2 cents here.

It is possible to have 10 episodes on each disc with minimal compression, because the current volume sets with 4 episodes are only single layer discs. And if the crappy trailers were taken off, and the full two layers were used, there is no reason why it cant look fantastic.

I have the sell sheet which Columbia (now Sony Pictures Home Video) sends retailers, and it does have conflicting information. BUT the image shown does indeed say the ENTIRE series, and the sell sheet does list the aspect ratio as 1.78:1 anamorphic. So hopefully, fingers crossed, this is what we will get.

I may call them this week to confirm this, and let you know what I find out.

A quick search of classification decisions at the OFLC website yielded the following results:

The OFLC wrote:
ASTRO BOY SERIES 2 VOLUME 7 - ONLY A MACHINE/ ROBOT BOY/ THE LEGEND OF TOHRON/ MARCH OF THE MICRO BEARS

ASTRO BOY SERIES 2 VOLUME 8 - OLD DOG NEW TRICKS/ THE CASE OF THE PHANTOM FOWL/ GIDEON/ FAIRY TALE

ASTRO BOY SERIES 2 VOL 9 - SHAPE SHIFTER/ FIREBIRD/ SPACE ACADEMY/ ATLAS STRIKES BACK

ASTRO BOY SERIES 2 VOL 10 - BATTLE-BOT/ TIME HUNTERS/ ESCAPE FROM VOLCANO ISLAND/ AVALANCHE!

ASTROBOY VOLUME 11 - BATTLE OF STEEL ISLAND/ UNDERCOVER/ INTO THE DRAGON'S LAIR/ NIGHT BEFORE THE REVOLUTION/ ROBOTONIA

ASTROBOY VOLUME 12 - DAWN OF THE TECHNO-REVOLUTION/ SHOWDOWN IN ROBOTONIA/ JOURNEY TO TOMORROW/ ASTRO REBORN/ THE FINAL BATTLE

Note the inclusion of five episodes each for volumes 11 and 12. Now to wait for release dates to appear on retailers' websites, but I'm hoping it'll be two volumes per month for three months, as it was for "Season 1".

Cool, at least this greatly increases the chance of it being widescreen now.

I'd say it's almost a sure thing since Sony don't seem to be strictly following the R1 release.

Hopefully the price gets a reduction by the time we know more details.

Darn...don't see why they need to delay it even further, it's been six months almost as it is. Sad

Thanks for the info though Kirben. Cool

Man, I wish they'd make up their minds. It's season 1. It's both seasons. It's season 1. It's both seasons.

Not EzyDVD's fault, of course.

But the packaging pic itself still says "the complete series" which is pretty misleading if only half of it's in there.

Still, they've got more than a month to iron out the details.

They've now removed the picture, and are again saying that the box set is season 2 only.

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/780376

And both the box and volumes 7 and 8 have been pushed back to mid-September.

Tim's mention of volume 7 and 8 being pushed back to September. You seemed pretty pissed already that they were delayed from June to July, then September happens.

I thought that would set you off, but it appears not so.

My post was nowhere near strong enough to come off as "pretty pissed", more like mild disappointment mixed with confusion as to what the hold-up could be. Regardless of that, the ever-increasing wait is causing me to lose interest in seeing the rest of the series. Not because I'm angry with Columbia Tristar, but because I've practically forgotten where things left off and therefore don't feel like I'm missing something.

"Season 2" is significantly better than the first half, IMO. I don't know if I just got used to the dubbing, or if the voice actors found their stride, or if it's the change in story arc (somewhat more serialised and reminiscent of Animatrix Second Renaissance).

I've looked at various websites and they seem to finally have their facts straight about this set:

- Series 2 only
- Six discs
- Widescreen 1.78:1
- Box Art that matches the style of the first six volumes

I'll be putting in my preorder soon. Cool

I received my Astro Boy Complete 2nd Series today. It Looks VERY nice!

The outer box is cardboard, but it is reinforced (although not as hard as a Madman box is). It's in a Matt finish butt the picutres, logos and so forth are embossed and glossy (even the ones on the ends and side). It looks marvellous.

Inside the box is not a digipack or any crappy DVD holder like that, but a proper plastic box. Open it up and the six DVDs are housed nicely inside, one in the front and back of the box and the other four in two gray plastic holders in the middle. The DVDs are labelled volume 7 - 12 so they are the same that will be released invidually over the comming months. There is also a booklet which details the four episodes (five on volumes 11 and 12) on each DVD.

This box is a great release, Sony Home Entertainment have done really well with this box. Well worth the money.

Now all I've got to do is watch the episodes on the DVDs. Cool

EDIT: Volume 12 has a short 8 minute featurette on the Making Of Astroboy. It has explanations from the Japanese creators of this series (with a voice over translator). They even show you how to draw Astroboy. This is wonderful.

The US release has this too, you get to see that guy with the beard (Marc Handler?) in action, talking the Japanese people into wrecking the entire Astroboy story and reducing the body count to 0. Rolling Eyes
The how to draw Astroboy bit was good. Cool
