Dude, you might as well try to convince your parents to take you to a titty bar
Same concept, less clothes |

I don't think I could imagine anything more annoying and frustrating then going with my parents to Japan... having to explain everything, hearing them complain so much... it'd be like travelling with Americans. |

Most of the ones i saw were actually well covered. The only ones slightly less so were the "he is my master" girls. They were at the "@Home" cafe, they also feature a middleschool uniform with a very cute model.

Everyone hails it as the fashion HQ of Japan, but I honestly didn't see it. Then again I wasn't exactly looking for fashion there so eh... the mandarake store there is pretty damned win, though. |

Oh, if you ever do go shopping for fashion, Shibuya seriously rocks.
If you ever go shopping for Transformers, Shibuya seriously sucks.
Oh yeah, it's also close to Todai (Tokyo Uni). _________________ In Soviet Russia Eye More Than Meets You! |

I don't recall any of the Animate stores having a bargain bin, but Mandarake certainly did. I picked up giant Ayupan figures and a Price of Tennis towel for 500 yen, each which normally go for 1000yen+... they had the rather rare Final Fantasy VIII 1/6 figures for 2000 yen or so, and Rei/Asuka figures for 500-1000 yen each.
The only problem being that space is obscenely limited in a suitcase |

Especially for annoyling delicate things like figurines. I swear i would of had that $200 CCS figuringe if it weren't for space. _________________ blog |

Correct. |
Which one is sadder? knowing which dating sim anime it comes from, or guessing it correctly without watching one episode of the said anime or playing the game?
Oh, well, the next time I go to Japan (whenever that is), I'll just have to get those figurines that you can't get in Australia. _________________ 456 hours of unwatched anime DVDs

I think most of this thread is sad, and almost makes me depressed to read it. I'M TOO DUMB TO FIND OTHER WORDS TO USE SO I USE THE F WORD Japan, go visit some place cool, with good culture and history like Europe. Don't come to Japan to go to maid cafes and buy anime merchandise. _________________ "...Seeing that you speak Japanese, they will wag their heads and smile condescendingly, and admit to each other that you are really quite intelligent - much as we would do in the presence of a pig or an ape of somewhat unusual attainments."

I think you're confusing "past" and "present" culture here. Some people actually enjoy doing the whole temples/castles/historical landmarks jazz, and Japan has that in spades... and if someone wants to go to Japan for its present culture, well, they're in for an interesting learning experience. That's the whole point of going overseas afterall...
I dunno what it's like in Hiroshima, but I found Tokyo reeks of the stereotypes you see on tv. It's just what the doctor ordered if you want to enjoy the 'wacky' side of Japan... cosplayers, otakus, people being crammed into trains... sure, it's not what the whole country is really like, but who cares? Visitors are there for a couple of weeks at the most. Not everybody gives a crap about the negative sides of Japan that the people like you living there complain about, just like I'm sure Japanese tourists couldn't care less about Australian politics, they just want to hug a Koala. I don't see a need to rag on someones holiday plans over it... |

Indeed I back up Waffle-licious here. There are the two japanese cultures both of them equally interesting and fascinating. My one regret is that I didn't see as many cosplayers as I would have wanted to. _________________ blog |

My original statement about the thread depressing me was more about the talk of school girl uniforms and the like. I still think people certainly should come visit Japan. I'm just suggesting that they don't come over here to buy anime merchandise, and then leave. Packing their bags so they can maxamize the amount of stuff they can bring on return. I highly suggest doing what you say. Going to temples, shrines and what not. And definately get out of the big cities for a bit. I don't complain so much about Japan (except maybe the lack of real bread, or the ability to buy bread as a loaf), that said, I still think Japan's culture is all as interesting as its made out. _________________ "...Seeing that you speak Japanese, they will wag their heads and smile condescendingly, and admit to each other that you are really quite intelligent - much as we would do in the presence of a pig or an ape of somewhat unusual attainments."

Unless anyone here is actually a former head of state, probably not. The most us common folk will ever see is the parking lot outside on a bus tour. |

hello again
the tour group i went on did the Imperial palace
you do not acturally go into the palace itself
it's more a tour of some of the outer building in the
palace grounds the history of such buildings
also some of the gardens.but you are on a timed tour
the tour group has to be there by a certain time and be
out be a certain time so you do not get time to wander around
freely ... |

You can probably get posters any time (e.g. got to Animate and one floor will probably have lots, along with other "chara" goods such as pencilboards and random badges and schtuff, or Gamers for mostly Broccoli goods).
Calendars obviously tend to only come around at certain times of the year. I think the ones by AZUMA Kiyohiko (Azumanga Daioh, Yotsuba&!) came out around March, to co-incide with the school year, but I supose most others would come out around November. _________________ --

When you get out of Akihabara JR station, take the "Akihabara Electric Town" exit (there are signs in English).
You should come out to a small street facing a big store with escalators along the outside (looks cool ).
Turn right and walk along this street toward the main street. Gamers is on the right before you get to the intersection.
When you get to the main street, turn right and walk up that street. Animate is a fair way up the street, on your right.
Of course there's heaps more to look at in Akiba - just wander the streets and you'll find out _________________ --

Yesterday I spent all day with some friends at the Fujikyu Highlands amusement park ... it has the worlds tallest rollercoaster and a jet ride that goes from 0-100 km/h in 1.8 seconds ... and doesnt stop accelerating untill it hits 174km/h! I went on both.
The first drop on the rollercoaster is insane ... it drops at an angle
of 10 degrees ... its basically like a free fall. For half of the
coaster your ass isnt even in the seat, you're in the air with only
the bar to stop you flying out.
The jet ride is nuts too ... you dont even know what is happening and
suddenly its just like ... BAM! then while going at 174km/h you hit an
almost 90 degree vertical incline ... it feels like hitting a wall and
you are thrown forward ... then you hit the top and the track goes 180
degrees and headds straight down again. I still have a sore neck.
I recommend this place to anyone that doesn't scare easily. It's about 1.5 hours by bus from tokyo (shinjuku). Ticket price is 4900 yen per day including all rides. The bus costs 1700 yen one way. Not cheap, but fun. Anyway's, the park is right near the base of mt fuji and you can get good photos from the ferris wheel. |

That sounds awesome, and the prices aren't overly bad as well. (in comparison to other theme parks) I personally am not a fan of roller coasters but I'd certainly recomend it to people. _________________ blog |

In most anime goods shops, they have specific signs (in English, too) forbidding you to take photos. I presume to prevent copying, etc.
In "normal" shops like department stores, restaurants, etc. I haven't seen this restriction. _________________ --

Outside, it's no different than anywhere else. Inside shops, if you've got a camera hanging around your neck, they'll probably cross their arms and go "no photo! no photo!". At least in smaller shops. In big stores they don't care...
You won't be allowed to take photos at any sort of concert, handshake event, or basically anything to do with celebrities. They make a fortune off charging fans for photos, so... |

In "normal" shops like department stores, restaurants, etc. I haven't seen this restriction. |
It might not be sign-posted, but its a no-no. Of course you can do it, and if they dont see you they wont know. But if they catch you, theyll come over and make big crosses with their arms. Department stores, clothing stores, whatever. Restaurants and bars dont really matter - unless youve gone there for the only purpose of taking pictures? But if you were just there normally with friends taking pictures and stuff its fine. |

So, what do they do in Japan to celebrate? |
Sorry, just noticed this now. The answer is a public holiday, opening the palace to the public, and address from the emperor and not much else. |

I've heard its better than akihabara for anime goods, is that true? |
I've read it's a fangirl paradise, as it's aimed more to them. Didn't go there myself...

*ears perk up* I'm interested. What's there that makes you say its aimed towards fangirls? ^^ _________________ It's only the fairy tale... |

As we've previously mentioned, while Akihabara is often associated with male otaku, Tokyo's Ikebukuro area is more and more being recognized as the woman otaku's sacred ground. Livedoor reports the main draw for girls is the large number of yaoi manga and dojin stocked in the numerous bookshops here. From the JR Ikebukuro station east exit it can be found in 10 minutes on foot. This part of Ikebukuro even has a nickname now, "Otome Road (Maiden Road)". The stores "Character Queen", "Animate Ikebukuro Headquarters", "K-BOOKS Animation Pavilion", "Mandarake" etc. can all be found about 200 meters from each other. |
