The screenplay does a pretty good job of giving the essence of the battles and the characters. That's my opinion upon reflection. I had to get over the Hong Kong Action Movie take on it. I was worried that it would be Young and Dangerous Go Drifting but it settled down and there were none of the wire-fight scenes I was expecting. Smile
For mine the driving scenes are real enough of the time to excuse the effects to highlight some cruicial moments. That was the trickiest part but it was done well. Several million times better than the "Tricked-Out" rubbish from the TokyoPoop anime. Evil or Very Mad
The thing that doesn't work for me is Bunta. Somehow we're supposed to believe that he is a hopeless drunken slob has beaten his son over many years while at the same time skillfully nurturing his young talent and making fragile tofu. Bunta is much neater and meticulous than that. Bunta wants his son to be a man, that's all, so the inclusion of child abuse is bizarre and unfortunate.
There's a few clangers: the number plates start mosiaced, then the fake 5-digit plates appear and then the 86 changes number in some scenes. The S-Class of Myogi's Papa ages 15 years in the space of a few days: it's a new model when leaving the Love Hotel and a much older model when he drops off Natsuki while Takumi lies in wait. Am I just nitpicking?
The car sounds aren't synced as well as in the anime, but that was probably the least of their worries. The voices seem to be synced well, which is no mean feat given the language barriers.

About Bunta:
I think it works well. He let go of his dream (to be a racer) to raise a family, but his wife then dumps him... so he's retreated into the bottle, but he doesn't want his son to end up like he is.

As for the 86 licence plate, maybe the 1st 86 is privately owned, and the owner doesn't want to show it? I dunno.

I know they custom-built several 86s in the racing guise, which would be why they'd not bother hiding the numbers.

they had 3 made for the movie i believe. One crashed
Dunno why the plates are blurred...crappy blur effect?

The Bunta thing was intentional. They changed his character for some reason i forgot now. But it was intentional, and i like his change. It makes him more real, and funny.

My thoughts on the movie:

First and foremost, the racing sequences were awesome. It wouldn't be easy to get drifting looking good and getting great angles on camera, they did well. The last race makes me crave a three-way battle in the anime

The character modifactions on the other hand, ruined the movie for me. The whole Bunta thing was whack, Ry and Zack being friends was whack, and the emperors being punks was stooooooooopid and Iggy being a cross between Cole and Himself mixed with some ego was homo. On the flip side, Ry and Tak were portrayed nicely!

If you get past the quirks in the characters and story its actually not a bad movie with the humor, romance and action, but weighing up and pros and cons, imo it ruins it for fans of the series!
