In an MTV interview, Keanu Reeves talked about the progress that The Day The Earth Stood Still producer Erwin Stoff (who has worked exclusively with Reeves for the past two decades) has made on a live action remake of Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto?s anime sensation Cowboy Bebop.

Reeves told MTV that he was eager to play Cowboy Bebop protagonist and futuristic space cowboy, Spike Spiegel. "We've got the rights, we've got a writer, and he's putting together a scene outline," Reeves told MTV about the Cowboy Bebop project, which is set up at Fox.

Reeves explained to MTV why he loved Cowboy Bebop, "It's got a Western quality, a Western/film noir aspect to it. It's got so much style to it, and that's part of its appeal'that kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect."

According to Reeves the live action film will focus on the origins of the Bebop team of bounty hunters and will incorporate the conclusion to the 26-episode anime and at least some of the episodic adventures explored in the series.

Creating the right 'look' for the live action movie is of paramount concern for Reeves, who told MTV, that he thought Cowboy Bebop would be "a production designer's dream. I think you just need a good production designer." Fans of the Cowboy Bebop anime would add that "you also need to get Yoko Kanno to create the music for the live action movie."

Keanu Reeves....as...Spike Spiegel....

...

...I can't seem to make that leap. From his previous films that I've seen I kind of wonder if he could even make a halfway decent attempt at spike.

I reckon he could. After the action shots in the Matrix trilogy he has the necessry familiarity with Anime style action. Remember, the Wachowski brothers who made Matrix said that a lot of the action scenes were inspired by manga and anime.

The only thing that may let him down is the timbre of his voice if he goes to light when speaking. I guess I'll have to rewatch "The Replacements" again where he does a lot of normal conversational speech.

There is something about Keanu's acting these days that just makes me think "That's Neo." Dubbing would be a good idea.

My biggest issue is that Spike is a really.....dynamic character. NONE of the films I've seen Reeves in has he managed to pull of a dynamic character truly successfully. A moment here and there perhaps, but not for the whole film. Nothing against him but he's just a little...I dunno. Can't think of the right word to describe him.

That he is a bad actor and wont pull it off playing spike and end up making us fans hate him more for ruining one of the classic anime series.

Even. These days, his characters, emotionally speaking, never seem to go up or down, its always _______ ... I mean I always worry that if he were to break into a full smile, his face might crack or something.

I think a lot of people are being too hard on him I think he could do at least a reasonable impersonation of Spike; and I’m sure he can do a range of emotions (otherwise what sort of a person would he be of-screen) remember he also stared in things like ‘Speed’ And ‘Bill & Ted's Excellent/Bogus Adventure’.

Geez Shinji, I didn't know you loved Keanu soo much. Razz

If you want to have an example in his defense, Speed would definitely not be the best one to use, also Bill & Ted was a very long time ago. Nobody's saying that he's not a great actor, just that Spike needs more than a 'smirk and tilt your head to the side slightly' approach.

Will probably get myself flamed for this, but I am with Shinji on this one. Keanu isn't such a bad robot...I mean actor. Depends what they cast him in. He is alot less wooden than he used to be. That said I can think of a dozen superior actors without even trying.

See how he goes, you never know, it may never happen.

I can never understand why they want to make anime into live action though. Seems a bit to me.

I think Keanu will be fine - the problem is that most of his roles have required him to act like a robot recently. The Day the Earth Stood Still is a really bad example. I mean, have you seen the original?

I think Keanu as Spike would result in a character too different to the one I know. The producers can do better, but his star status will be hard to pass.

On that recomendation I think I'll have to go and see it myself. Though going by the trailers, the message has changed from the the Original.

The impression I got from the original (which was made during the Cold War) was, " If you don't sort yourselves out as a race, you will either self destruct or we will destroy you and the planet you live on".

Themessage I get from the new one is, "If you don't sort yourselves out as a race, you will destroy yourselves and the planet you live on. Whilst we don't care about you, the planet and its biosphere is another matter".

Reminds of those stories about sapent races sponsoring the development of sapience in other lifeforms. Also, the preservation of planetary enviroments so that other lifeforms can develop on them and be sponored up as well.

The novels were written by David Brin - They are called "Uplift" or "Earthclan" Novels.

Some Titles are: Sundiver, Startide Rising, The Uplift War.

The new movie trailer gave me a thought that Keanu Reeves' character could be in the same vain.

That's one of the movies I was thinking of earlier with him in that I...well in all honestly I detest that movie. Watching it a dozen times in Year 9 for English didn't help much, but my biggest problem with it was that it could've been so much better.

Sleepless Beauty wrote:

Exactly, all we're saying (or at least, all I'm saying) is that he's just not the right one. "UncaBou" mentioned 'star status' but just because he's a big "star" doesn't mean he's the right man for the job.

For some reason I get the feeling they should've cast Johnny Depp as Spike. Mainly coz I haven't seen Johnny fail at anything Razz

I haven't even watched all of Bebop though (yes, shame on me. I've seen SOME though)

Also, Spike is (because he is still alive) all about fast reflexes, especially when dogfighting in his monocoq fighter.

For Jet Ron Pearlman would be good as he is the biggest member of the crew and his hip reflecs that with the grapnel.

I was just thinking, what are they going to do with the mecha design - ie the fighters and the Space Trawler, no change I hope? Rolling Eyes

Well there's no script yet, so we don't know what elements of the series they'll incorporate into the film.

Apparently they're wanting to incorporate the Red Eye story and the ending of the series in some way for the movie.

*sigh*.. i wish it was something else then the red eye story... >_> me thinks they are going to focus more on the drugs side of it rather then spike himself....

basically like The Max Payne Movie.. s'pose to be about revenge of his family.. but it was more focused on the drugs.....

*sigh*...

we'll just wait and see i guess....

So we've got Johnny Depp as a possible recommendation, who else would fit the role? We may as well have fun with this arguably unfortunate news!

I think that the actor needs to be someone that just exudes cool.

Personally I think that James Franco could come close. But in all honesty, the character would need to be toned down for a live action version otherwise it could come across camp and contrite.

Ron Perlman would smash Jet! As for Ein, I'm thinking Bette Midler...

as good as depp is, he wouldn't fit the height, billy zane as poss for spike's height..

pearlman as jet could work though i doubt the hair piece would work plus height could be an issue.. if they follow the anime spike is taller by 3" last i checked pearlman was 6'3"-6'4" so who ever plays spike is going to have to be atleast 6'6"-6'7" in height and skinny, not to mention having to be versed in the martial arts....

As far as martial arts goes, that's what being trained by experts is for. They'll learn the specific moves and such for each of the scenes

If we look at his previous movies (matrix mainly) we see that his fighting style is very straight forward and serious, which is like the complete opposite of Spike from bebop, I think that like any anime turned live action by a western company is probably going to turn out bad, if done well (which I'm sure they are going to try their best) this series could be good, but if done from a wrong angle, then it would be a horrible movie, I think the main hurdle that they would have to get past is the many fans going "this is going to be stupid" I have watched a few live action movies, some of which were done extremely well, I saw the dragon ball evolution movie (and this is best done with an open mind otherwise you will just hate it fro the start) and I think that they did a half decent job with the movie, a few things that could have been done better, but then isnt there always? well I just dont think that Keanu Reeves is quite the right preson for the job, but if theres a good director then it should turn out alright, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what comes of it

Few movie stars are proficient musicians. That doesn't stop them making good music movies. Geoffrey Rush in Shine, for example. It's all about specific training for the movie. Fighting movies are no different. You cannot base Reeves' fighting ability for Cowboy Bebop on the Matrix movies. It's a combination of the actor's ability and the fight director/choreographer's ability to make the fight look like it should. The actors are basically just puppets, doing what the director wants. I will wait until a movie eventuates before passing judgment.

That would be because Neo is not Spike. They are different characters that respond physically and emotionally in different ways.

I don't think you can get the feel for the charters in a movie, I loved the series but felt the Anime movie was a little flat because it was rushed for plot development.

You would need to be a brave actress to put on Fay's outfit.

I wonder if they will redo the Tank theme song for the opening.

Awww.. Theodore Logan would be great as Spike! I can totally see it. Its gonna fail, tho. It will not be as good as Firefly, and look what happened to that.

I will still see it. On DVD. Eventually.
