Hi all,

Manifest 2009 is on the weekend of the 21st-23rd of August at the Melbourne Showgrounds. It's a pretty big year for us, as its our tenth Manifest, and our first at a new venue.

All the usual Manifest chaos will be happening, such as anime screenings, cosplay, special events, traders and the like. We've also got some unique new experiences happening this year that you'll all find out in due course.

Our new location automatically means that this will be the biggest anime ever, with more space for traders, video games and events, as well as an easier time getting around the place.

For the truly insane, we're even having Mani-Midnight, an all-night event on the Saturday night. This is going to be totally cool, with screenings, roleplaying and CCG events, among other things running all through the night.

Overall, this is definitely going to be the best Manifest ever (I should know, I've seen the screening schedule!), and you should all make the effort to come to sunny Melbourne for the one weekend in August.

I'll see you there!

Yes....'Sunny'....it will be. Wink

I'm actually looking forward to manifest this year,. With a new venue it actually looks promising. I'm also hoping to do an AMV entry this time. (I want to get a new PC in the next few weeks first. My mac has finally made me snap.)

Would be cool to organise a madboard meet-up for it, either on the Friday or the Saturday. Just an idea....

Hmm... I've been over here a while now, it's prolly about time I unleashed myself on the Victorian anime community.
Beware of black-clad purple-haired catboys.

I dunno if you've done it at previous Manifests, but I'll be interested in seeing how the CCG events pan out. We weren't able to get much interest when we had them at the first WAI-Con. I shall bring along my Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon decks, I seldom get to use them.

Question: Will there be Smash Bros.?

Most probably.

So. Yeah. Thank god Manifest has finally left the Uni. But, that means theres is a lot of potential for teething problems with the new venue. And seeing as the last few years could barely get the old venue to unr correctly, I'm worried.

...well, actually it *was* sunny last year. We had a freak warm weekend, and I was happily not-freezing in my summery costume. ^_^;

The good news is that the people responsible for the last few years of Manifest have all been executed.

Hopefully all of the above! I haven't been since 2006, but the death of the former organisers and this new venue guarantee that I'm going.

Man, I feel sorry for every who had '08 or '07 as their first Manfiest. I guess it can only get better for them, though.

Trust me, we've done better.

2005 was probably the best Manifest ever, tbh. 2001 and 2002 I like for nostalgia reasons.

Probably should point out that this year marks the 10th Manifest event, and, as such, we're celebrating with a "Looking Back" theme. If you attended Minifest, you might have noticed that the screening schedule was full of older material.

That won't be the case for Manifest, but we do have some older stuff on the cards.

Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread. I'll do what I can to answer them. Obviously there'll be some stuff I just can't answer, though.

I've also got some cool stuff to talk about as we get closer to the event.

Count me into that group, I think 07 was the first Manifest I attended; I remember thinking how small it was for both years. I only went to buy manga anyway, so didn't really bother me.

This year though, I'm really looking forward to what booths will be there; hopefully there'll be some pretty cool stuff on display.

This is just more of a wishful thinking than question for Manifest.

Would like to see special guests attending the convention and having a panel or put this up for consideration for future Manifest. I have read up on Kalafina's recent trip to Anime Boston in the US and am rather jealous Laughing although I can understand Manifest wouldn't have the funds to do this what with paying the expenses for airfares and accommodation for the guests.

Maybe they can get one of their sponsors to do this Twisted Evil and with a new venue, the issue of space to attend the special guests' panel wouldn't be a problem.

Special guests are definitely something Manifest would like to do. It hasn't happened in the past due to the fact that they can actually be pretty expensive.

With the venue move and other stuff going on this year, it just hasn't been feasible. We are definitely looking at it for future Manifests, though.

It also used to be shot down when suggested because Manifest wanted nothing to do with dubs, and most of the people that would have been invited would have been English VA's, IIRC. Didn't it?

Thats an interesting piece of info. So the majority of the committee were purists then? Is this the reason why anime was always screened in subbed form? I always thought that the reason for this was because of licensing etc.

Yeah, I gave one of them a good laugh by asking if certain titles were dubbed or subbed for my first couple of Manifests.

No, we show subs because that's what the audience demands, or rather what the audience will tolerate. Counterintuitive, but true.

The number of people, or at least the number of people who turn up to anime conventions in australia, who will not watch subs is smaller than the number who will not watch dubs[1]. Showing subs excludes fewer people. We *have* shown dubs on a number of occasions... maybe a half-dozen or so, when there's something special about that particular dub that manages to transcend that effect.

I'd like to show more dubs, myself, but it's actually not often that a good opportunity presents itself. The draft schedule has... three hours, I think, of dubbed material, currently.

[1] Or at least the anecdotal evidence so is fairly strong. We'll be running a demographic survey this year; be sure to fill it out and tell us if we're wrong!

Just a brief reminder (with my Manifest hat on):

Pre-registration for Manifest closes on July 14. If you're intending to go, and you still haven't, please get your pre-registration in as soon as possible.

See you there!

2007 was my first year and, despite the trauma of my bag (containing a brand new camera and wallets, etc) briefly going missing after last years cosplay competition, I am gearing up for what promises to be the best Manifest yet! Very Happy

This post is an example of why I won't be attending this year after attending the previous three years. There's no need for this type of elitism. We've got ample amounts of it in anime fandom already without adding more. I'll "enjoy" my line ride somewhere else thanks.

It was a little harsh to reject those people and then to make them pay late reg fees, considering that the reason people are making the cheques and money orders out to the Registration Coordinator is because thats who they're asked to mail them to. In the bank section, they have the account name as Manifest Anime Festival, but I think its a bit of a stretch to expect people to guess thats the name they should use for cheques and money orders as well.

What got me was the tone that was used in that article. Even though I passed on pre-reg and probably wasn't going to go anyway, the option of going on the day was never totally eliminated for me until I read that. Don't abuse people who are trying to send you money.

Of course all the Manifest zombies on the fourms over there will probably be attempting witty comments about how awesome and funny this situation is. I really think the people ther would prefer a private con.

Kinda glad I'm not going now, out of principal.

I mean, would it really have been that hard to notify these people and say "hey, your money was late, so you're partially paid to attend this years event. just bring the rest owing on the day"? Apparently it's nowhere near as easy as being a condescending arse.

I am going as I am one of the crazy people doing things at Mani-Midnight. I think that there will be a lot of Red Eye in my future.

I will be bringing Legend of the Five Rings decks for the CCG part. Lots of Samurai, some Ronin, Goblins, Shugenja and Onis to paly with.

Since this will be my first MAnifest, I am gonna figure out what to do when I get there...

http://www.manifest.org.au/blog/2009/08/madman-theatre-decimated/
Quote:
DRAMATIC NEWS, EVERYONE!!!
It seems that our dedication to the Japanese culture has finally paid off. For the first time ever a giant monster has attacked a locale outside of Japan. Unfortunately however the target of this ruthless attack was our new venue; the Melbourne Showgrounds v_v

The Madman theatre was the theatre hit by this ruthless act of wanton destruction. The assualt happened early yesterday morning, so lucky for us the death count was only in the thousands, as opposed to the millions that would have been in that theatre were it a weekday. After decimating the Madman theatre, the giant Mothra moved on to destroy a few choice trams. However it did not bet on one of the trams being a robot in disguise! It quickly transformed into it’s mighty robot form, Inspektor, and as Mothra did not have a valid Metcard, it shot the moth into the stratosphere with an amazing blast! A blast so powerful that the Mothra was reduced to a billion tiny translucent wateresque drops which proceeded to rain down over Melbourne throughout the day. So those of you who got caught in the rain… that wasn’t rain!

Seriously though the Madman theatre has been reduced to fancy rubble and as such we negotiated with Melbourne Showgrounds and have replaced our Madman Rubble Theatre with a new shiny one: The Madman Building.

Therefore please note that the Program Book is a little wrong, and the triangular grey shape on the map is the new Madman Building.

Stay tuned for further developments!

The storms on Saturday night severely damaged part of the Royal Block, specifically the Prince Philip Room, which was to contain the Madman theatre. We've managed to arrange a new space with the help of the RASV in the building further down (it's the big one near the entrance, from memory).

You would not believe the panic when I heard what had happened on Sunday afternoon. Nargun, HB and I spent most of the evening figuring out how to cut our 3-theatre schedule down into a 2-theatre schedule.

Fortunately, we won't have to use that schedule now, so the one in the program book is (mostly) accurate.

I think the Mothra thing comes from the fact that Michael hasn't had a lot of sleep lately.

In short: Everything's fine, we lost a theatre but have a replacement for it.

Now all I need to do is collate the screening materials...

I am upset. Mothra would not attack anything unless they stole her young. And if Manifest had stolen her young, then they deserve it.

Apparently one of our former treasurers stole them, but we didn't find out about it until it was too late.

Had a fantastic time today. Come say hello to me in the Peppa-chan Lounge tomorrow!

And, of course, be sure to check out Madman's own theatre from 3pm, when it goes all-Gundam, all the time!

Manifest was great. Didn't see Stormo around, but did meet Sleepless and her sister for some hijinks.

I killed my wallet! O_O... so all in all, a good time ^^
Gonna have to go for all of the days next year, including mani-midnight if its on again.
Just going on the saterday wasn't enough >_>

The BlazBlue comp was cool to see, even if some of the voices were a bit gratting. am i the only one who wanted it set to the english cast? ^^;
Glad i didn't enter it however. i may enjoy playing the game, but i know when i'm out-classed in it Razz

If you want to know if you spotted me there at any point, i was the guy with long hair, in a black bleach shirt, black jeans, wearing a Prinny hat ^_^

Also, the people in BlazBlue costumes were sweet ^^ Rachel-Alucard most of all.

I believe that every version of BlazBlue we used was an imported Japanese copy. (I know mine was).

Looks like there was no new licenses announced Crying or Very sad

Madman #manifest acquisitions announcements: ghost in the shell 2.0, death note relight, eva movies.

Edit: I stand corrected Confused. Thought Relight had been announced already and confused GITS 2.0 with Innocence coming out on Blu-Ray or something Razz
