Anyone know how long each episode will stay up in the screening room? I want to know if I have to rush and watch them all before they are taken down, or can I watch at my leisure?

At the moment, there's no plan to take them down. At some point in the future to be determined, they may prune all but the first few episodes of each series.

I've tried to watch the episodes up in the Screening Room, and I've become sooooo P*&%ed off..
I basically get one or two seconds of video before it starts re-buffering.. and to be interrupted so often is totally ruining my viewing experience.

I'm on wireless broadband, and I know that I don't get the greatest reception because I'm a long way from the nearest tower, but if everything else I look at or listen via streaming can work fine, why the hell can't Madman's videos??

It would be easier for me if I could at least Download them before they start playing (like Youtube), but that doesn't seem to be happening here.. I tried to watch the Asterix in Britain trailer today. After 1 minute, I had counted at least 8 or 9 re-bufferings..

It's just NOT worth the effort at the moment..

Can anyone suggest a solution? (apart from getting proper cable broadband which I can't get until Helstra upgrades the local exchange)

Click on pause and wait for the entire episode/video to buffer. It will take longer than the episode runs for; the exact time depends on what speed your connection is.

@Jaden1

I'm on the slowest speed of ADSL, I just press pause, then do something else for a while, maybe watch an episode of another series in another room and then it is usually all buffered and ready to watch without interruption. (I'm choosing Medium Quality due to the slow connection)

A quick question about Episode 18 of FMA: Brotherhood.
I watch it usually with Medium Quality because of my slow net speed but when I have gone to play it, it shows the Madman logo, then the text about the ad, and then it comes up with a video not found message.
It seems to work in High Quality, just wondering if this is something wrong at my end or whether it is an issue with the actual Screening Room?

I'd dsy it's just that the file has either been named incorrectly or hasn't been uploaded. I doubt it's a problem with your end.

I tried watching it in High Quality, it took a fair while to buffer but when it gets to around the 3:30 minute mark it stops and goes right back to the start.
I'll try using a different browser and see if that makes a difference (I hope so, I've been hanging out all week to watch this episode!)

I changed over to Firefox and still had the same problem with Medium Quality and buffered it in High Quality which took around 2 hours and this time it played fine.

Note to MADMAN: I understand the free to air broadcasters relocate the watermark so as to ensure no screen burn. I've just aquired a Full Hi-Def plasma and with my PS3, view Madman Screen Room content (And loving it!!!). If Madman were to shift the watermark location for sequential episodes, I'd feel a little happier! Please consider.

You'd be lucky to get screen burn these days, especially from a watermark, from just a couple hours of viewing.

Thanks Speedy. I think UNLUCKY is the word you ment, and yes apparently screen burn is not the problem it was but I'm sure it's an easy precaution Madman could take.

Was wondering what people think of the Madman Screening Room and are people finding it beneficial in terms of the anime (or other Madman titles) that they choose to buy?

Personally I think it is quite impressive, Paul and the rest of the team have got it up and running and there has been some great content on there, most of which I have started to purchase or have decided to buy primarily because of being able to see it via this method first.

I just saw the announcement yesterday that they are now screening the whole of Saiyuki which I probably would have watched via the SR but I literally completed my collection of the Madman release of this just three days before they announced it.

Are there any plans to put back some Episode One's of various series again?

Yes, there should be more eps up but recently all the new shows we've released we're streaming the entire series for anyway lol

OH one more to add to the list. October 27 - Code Geass R2 will be streamed online 1 ep per week. Eps will stay online for 2 weeks only though.

Doesn't really help me... apart from FMA, Gurren Lagaan & OO, I've got everything they're screening and I didn't need the screening room to know that I was probably going to purchase all of these anyway.

Unless they start putting more newer series on, as opposed to ones like Saiyuki, I'd say its only really going to help people who are 'new' to anime purchasing or people who aren't prolific collectors and don't buy almost every titles that comes out.

But in saying that, if it helps at least one person decide whether they want to purchase a series, then thats a good thing.

Sleepless pretty much speaks my opinion as well. I agree with everything she said.

I respect and applaud MadMan for having the Screening room plus. Its just a shame no one is allowing them to use it to its true potential.

Cheeky bugger Razz Seriously, everything apart from the very first boxset arrived on Friday afternoon just past. That being said I did want to put the picture up Very Happy

That's good news about Code Geass R2 as well and other episodes in the future too. I don't mind the older titles going up, there is still plenty of the back catalogue that I am yet to check out, His and Her Circumstances was great, I might not have considered that as a purchase until I watched the first few eps via Madman.

Hopefully plenty of people see stuff via the Screening Room, go out and buy it, MM makes some money and then licence titles such as the highly requested Clannad and the rest of the YUA franchise!

Would it be a future possibility for an entire film from the Eastern Eye range or other MM brands to be streamed for a limited period of time?

Wouldn't it be better to wait until the first season collection is released before starting this up? Season one collection will be out late November, but by then the first few episodes of R2 will have been and gone!

Or is this done prior on purpose to entice people to buy it when it does hit the shelves?

Actually no... Code Geass has been releasing individually since 18/11/2008 and putting up the R2 eps is moreso geared towards the people who have been collecting it since then, not on the off chance that people might buy the complete collection in November.

Spritza wrote:

I seriously doubt it... why would MM put up episodes of the 2nd season to entice people to buy the 1st? Noone is going to watch a series halfway through, at least, not if they don't want to potentially see spoilers.

I'd be interested to hear a discussion by the Madman team on the Snacktime podcast as to how successful they feel the screening room has been, say on the first anniversary of full episodes being posted.
It's a great way for newcomers to become acquainted with anime, particularly as there's so much range in the type of stories being told.
As a collector, I appreciate any opportunity to sample a program before purchasing.
Whatever optimum content capacity Madman determines it has for the screening room, I think the mix should focus on:
1) A periodic schedule of complete season/s (not necessarily entire series) landmark series, (Bebop, FMA, InuYasha, etc...). This would be with a view to to grow anime awareness in the market.
2) Schedule a range of sampler episodes by which I mean it should have at least the first three episodes of any chosen program. I feel one episode is often not enough to get involved in a series.
3) Special event program. FMA-B is a perfect example. Even before the series is dubbed into English. Whets the appetite of the existing collector market.
4) Properly cut and produced promos, not just the text less opening titles.
5) Original artist music videos of songs used in series.
6) Behind the scenes specials and unusual clips not otherwise available.
It would be great if ISP's could offer Madman's Screening Room unmetered, although I don't know how feasible this would be.

So Code Geass R2 is coming to the screening room.
A good idea to lure people in, but Madman never posted all of Code Geass season 1 in the screening room, was only a handfull of episodes.
Probably because could download it on Iview and watch it on ABC2 back then.

I've also asked via email if things like the Madman panels at conventions might be considered to be streamed via the SR, have been told that the idea has been discussed but there are no definite plans. Content like this would be good for those who are unable to attend these conventions.
Another thing that would be good to see on there is some behind the scene stuff, an example of this is the interview with Vic Mignogna. If Madman were in the position to get more content along these lines I think it would be great in creating more awareness of the genre.
Again, it would be good to see some more content from the other Madman brands such as Cinema, Eastern Eye and Kids etc.

We are essentially doing the same thing with R2. The only exception to this being that there's no free-to-air TV broadcast and will remain an online only thing.

The entire season 1 was done via iview for 2 weeks only as well and we only have permission to the the same with season 2.

Sly, is obtaining the rights for online screening now a common practice when acquisitions are made or is it something that has to be specifically negotiated? I appreciate this may be getting close to confidential business practice so I ask in most general terms should an answer be permissible. The reason for the question comes back to future ability to screen - and thereby promote an increasing variety of titles.

kind of confidential but we are of course always trying to grab as much of it as we possibly can. It's still early days. Keep in mind we are still not even 6 months in from launching this platform.

The sample episodes of anime series, are a great way to try out series. So far I'm not buying many more anime series though, but rather saving money on anime series, I might have taken a chance on.

The legit anime available on YouTube offers much more variety, and shows the online Australian rights to many anime series, are already owned by other companies. I like how Funimation in particular often offers complete series (ie School Rumble Season 1), for a limited time. Although I wonder how it effects DVD sales, when complete anime series are offered for free online, even if for limited time.

I have a streaming section on my web site, that offers links to all the the legit anime offered online, that is available to Australia.

Yes I'd be interested to know how streaming full seasons impacts on sales also. Considerations in any study should include:
1) What proportion of anime viewers (Free to air / online) would actually buy anime on disk?
2) Sale trends of streamed programs compared to un-streamed.
3) Long term popularity growth for anime due to exposure by free means.
My view is that in our market anime is largely untried, particularly in the titles aimed for adults. If product is available for free from sources such as TV, Madman SR, other online legit and even not legit, I'm confident popularity and hence sales, will increase.
Four years ago my annual anime budget was $0. So far this year I've spent well over $1,000 on anime Disk purchasing (Mostly Madman titles I might add). It all started when my nephew asked me to view the first few Dragonball episodes on DVD with him. Then I became aware it was on Foxtel and occasionally I'd catch the odd episode on Cartoon Network. This is when I first saw a promo for FMA on Adult Swim. I'd also found Samurai Shamploo on SBS. These two shows really fired up my interest in anime.
I've since discovered fantastic titles such as Bebop, Black Lagoon, Beck, Haruhi, etc and not to forget features such as the Ghibli films.
Why is it that retailers such as JB allocate so much DVD/BD floor space to TV shows that have aired repeatedly?
When people find something they like and the cost is reasonable, they want to own it. The general perception is that best quality comes on a disk which is a tangible product.
There's always going to be those that will view anime from free sources without buying, but how many of those would buy without seeing first. Obviously there are other factors such as reputation. I would always buy a Star Trek show even without having previewed, but that's a different ball game.

Do you know there is another 26 episodes of Saiyuki called Saiyuki Reload Gunlock and an OVA Saiyuki Reload Burial.

Gunlock is available from the US (or was) and Burial is currently only out in Japan.

I'd love to see Madman get both of these to complete the saga, but I think I've got more chance of getting run over by a flying pig coming in to land..

The MM releases are the two Saiyuki boxsets, the Saiyuki Requiem dvd and then another boxset, Saiyuki Reload. I haven't heard anything about these others until seeing your post. People seem to be watching Saiyuki via the Screening Room, at least the counter thing of 'most watched videos' on the side indicates that, so maybe it is possible that MM will get these others later down the track.

Re: The Screening Room, awesome to see Brotherhood up a day early two weeks in a row now, great job!

I know there was some trouble with this week's episode of Gurren Lagann (episode 19) and it got taken down. Was just wondering if it will be up in the Screening Room before the weekend?
