I was sitting here thinking why there is such a fuss about this - just don't buy it pre-owned - until I read this. Totally never thought about that.

Well, probably wouldn't of bought it anyways, but now definitely not. I can't believe how stupid companies can be.

Did a bit of reading, and the media seems to be blowing it up. You can play the game as many times as you like, you just can't play it for the first time again. Anything you do gets saved, so while you can replay the game, you can't "start from scratch" with entry level levels and stuff.

I can see how a lot of people would be super pissed off, and I strongly disagree with this decision to support these people. For my personal use, this would have no effect on my gaming in any way, and therefore could care less. However, I can see how a lot of people would be super pissed off for strikingly obvious reasons, and I strongly disagree with this decision to support these people.

Glad to see I'm not the only one getting cranky.

While the clarification HD mentioned helped clear things up, it's still sitting on the precipice of a very slippery slope.

And yes, that was a shameless plug.

Thank you, personal pet peeve of mine.
I realise both are accepted forms, but using "could" makes no sense given the intent of the statement.

So I've started playing Metroid: Other M. I'm so conflicted. On one hand I really like the controls and the atmosphere is really quite good.

On the other hand, the unskippable cutscenes and the changes to Samus' character and everything to do with them from the writing, to the direction, to the way to often references of motherhood from a now submissive Samus. Samus also seems to move a bit to quickly for so early in the game and have all those abilities early on feels wrong.

I'm going to stick with it though, apparently the first hour is pretty poor at representing the game I've heard.

Four minutes of camripped FFXIII-2 footage.

Looks like it's going to be even better than FFXIII.

I know I'm a bit late to the party but I just picked up Portal 2 for the PS3. I've had the portal gun for all of two minutes and already I'm seeing the brilliance of the concept. Not to mention Wheatley is bloody hilarious.

Edit: Now that I've been playing for a few hours I have to say the sense of satisfaction when you solve a test chamber is pretty damn sweet. Very Happy

I tripped over what I rekon is a "cool thing" a few days ago. I think it originally came from Kotaku, but it looks like it may have originated HERE. The idea is that July is Shameless Gaming Month. During July, you make a larger than usual attempt @ reducing your pile of shame as much as possible. It looks like it might be catching on around the internats (probably thanks to Kotaku?) and considering I have a massive pile of shame I am definitely participating.

First up for me is Wheelman on x360. I decided to do this game first for two reasons. The first being its long and not very good, so constantly postponing it has to stop, and it stops now. The other reason is I can't find a 250gbHDD anywhere for my old Phat x360. My 120 is now so full of stuff that I can now only have one "sometimes" game and one "Current" game installed. Wheelman has been my Sometimes game for FAR too long.

Once this is finished (ie once I can no longer bare to play it any more) It will get uninstalled FOREVER. Most likely replaced with my next Sometimes Game, Burnout Paradise Ultimate, which will not be part of my shameless Gaming Month efforts.

I have not yet decided what will be next up, but I am pretty sure my Wii, which is my platinum record console of shame has a huge flashing neon sign over it that is attempting to burn PICK ME PICK ME into my brain. I'm hoping I can resist but not sure how strong I am in that matter. I might try and concentrate on XBLA half-finished titles, or may just pull my thumb out and actually turn the PS3 on! SHOCK! My SHame options are .. large and varied. Not necessarily a good thing. Embarassed

Anyone else think Shameless Gaming Month is a good thing? What are you doing to participate?

Back when the Dreamcast was current it would've been a good idea for me because I was buying games faster than I could play through them. Right now my "backlog" is Infamous (good karma run) and Portal 2 which I just bought today.

At least you now have a PS3! I've got all these PS3 games I've picked up along the way and never seemed to have included the console. Laughing

I like the idea, but I have no motivation whatsoever and yet I keep buying games that I might want to play someday.

When I've moved into my new house, I'll try and organise everything and maybe then I'll be able to whittle away the pile.

I recommend getting Portal 1 for PC (or orange box for consoles so you can get portal 1) cause they both tie in nicely.

Yeah, Trjn is the one who started that, he got Mark Serrels to post about it on Kotaku to get some attention.
For far I have gone back and finished FEAR and FEAR2 to clear the way for F3AR. Once I've played FeAR I plan to go and finally finish Arkham Asylum, Fallout New Vegas, Crysis 2 and maybe the DLC for Fallout 3 that I haven't played yet (my wife has all the achievements for FO3 incl DLC achievements so this is one she's always needling me about.

Her pile of shame is pretty much Resistance, which we haven't played all the way through because the PS3 is a stupid machine for poopoo heads.

My pile of shame is pretty horrendous, spanning PSP, DS, 3DS, PS2, PS3, PC and 360. The majority of my neglected games are for PC, mostly thanks to these Steam sales.

Yeah, same. Especially because I basically didn't play video games at all last month due to that horrible timewaster that is socialising.

Speaking of horrible... I'm playing Duke Nukem Forever, and it's not horrible at all! It's quite fun, actually. You pretty much have to appreciate the toilet humour that is Duke to enjoy it though. I can't help but feel the internet is so in love with wanting to hate the game that it could never have gotten a decent write up, regardless of quality.

Haha, er, I don't have a "shameless" month. I'm always trying to catch up on my pile of shame. Razz By the time I've finished an older game most of the new games I was looking at are real cheap so I pick up a few of them, finish one and then decide to finish an older game again and the cycle repeats.

Doesn't help that I have a bad habit of replaying games either. Rolling Eyes

My backlog is disgusting. Out of the 200 or so games that I own, I've finished maybe 20. Interesting how art imitates life; I never get around to finishing anything actually constructive either.

I finished Wheelman! That's my first SGM game done and dusted. Baleeted from the HDD with prejudice! Glad to see the back of it. Hopefully in a month or something I'll only remember the stupid fun parts, and not so much the cat kicking, controller throwing, tantrum inducing stupid parts. That, and I hope I remember not to EVER attempt that final Chievo to get "S" rank on all the side missions. There were some there that were simply far beyond reasonable.

As my x360 has decided to only open the disk tray on a random number of times pressing eject (usually somewhere between ten and a million) but has now also decided to not recognise any disks I try to play, it looks like disk games are off the SGM to-do list.

I've been meaning to go back and play some XBLA games anyway. They still work fine. First up will be Vandal Hearts. I've already finished it once, but there is two endings so I am going to go for the other one. Its not a very long game so I should have it done in 2 or 3 days.

Here is another way to participate in Shameless Gaming Month. The whole point it to reduce your pile of shame, right? Well there are other ways than just playing them. You could give them away, trade them, or ebay them etc. Smile

Well ideally you should play them. My wife can't understand how I can have so many unfinished games or play more than one game at a time without going crazy because unfinished games drive her nuts.

I have traded in games I never finished, like Stranglehold, Too Human, Little Big Planet, a few others. I think I only made the decision to trade them in once I had rationalised with myself I was never going to play them, ever.

So many great Tales games that never made it into english ;_; *sniff*
Look's like we are getting Graces at least... fingers crossed we get Xillia as well ^_^

I personally don't like having too many unfinished games at once, though currently I have 5 in my now playing list.

After I put everything onto backloggery, it made me realise how many games I had yet to play and it has motivated me to get stuck into it! Although the steam sales arn't helping my completion rate Razz

I like this shame-July-games thing. My contribution is Wonder Boy in Monster World for the Sega Mega Drive. I finished it back in the 90s when I picked it up cheap ($30 - that was cheap in 1994!), but never finished it with all the hearts.

So that's my goal - finish the game with all the hearts. If I can do this by the end of the month, that will be awesome Smile

I'm scared of how embarrassing my backloggery entry will be BTW, so thumbs-up to those making progress Smile

@HD: The disc errors on your XB360 sound nasty - do you have another machine as a backup?

Yep I have the Resident Evil Limited Red Console. Some time later today I am going to borrow dad and get him to stick the leaf blower into the non-working one. hope that helps in some capacity. If not, I'll just chuck it out and use the RE Red Console until the Gears of War 3 Limited Edition 320GB Console comes out in September. I fully intend on buying that despite the fact I thought GoW was pretty rubbish and have no real desire to play GoW2 or GoW3. In fact I will most likely trade the game back in straight away. I just ant a not-black console and the 320GB HDD.

Man, Vandal Hearts is a lot more dull and tedious than I remembered. I'm not sure I will make it through a whole game. Its so long winded and.. samey. So strange that I remember quite liking this the first time around, which is why the idea of re-playing for the alternate ending seemed like a good idea.

I'm not playing any PS3 titles for Shameless Gaming Month (yeah yeah, you are all really shocked I can tell). My excuse is I don't like black. No, really. I am going to buy the Candy Pink and Jungle Green contollers as soon as my preferred store gets them back in stock. Its a UK store, so by the time the controllers get here Shameless Gaming Month will be over.

I now am not sure where I will go from here. I'll persevere with Vandal Hearts for now, but after that.. I dunn really. I don't want to go near the Wii cos strange old people scare me. I am not playing the PS3 until my controllers arrive, and I can't play the x360 due to the drive has shat istelf.

I guess that only leaves PSP, NDS, and .. *shudder* PC.

Been dividing my time between Portal 2 on the PC, Hyperdimension Neptunia on the PS3, and Resident Evil 4 on PS2.

I've done about a third of mine. At the time of writing, I've not even touched any of my PS1, 2 or 3 games, and am going to have to go digging in my storage drawers to find the handheld games that I've not finished. Of which there are many.

Probably. I'm still waiting for the press release confirming that they're not actually releasing Tales of the Abyss on 3DS in Europe and it was all a joke. Wink

Nice... I'd pull out my SMS games but I don't want to be angry for the next month. Razz

As for the Steam sale, I caved and bought the Commander Keen pack... $3 to relive some of the best times of my childhood gaming, bargain! Very Happy

I've thought about buying it but going to wait till the last day, or if it's a daily special, just in case they make it even cheaper by surprise Razz

Or buy it tomorrow along with whatever that may come up if there's anything I want.

My steam pile of shame is up to 103 games Laughing

I bought the Half-Life Complete set yesterday. The id Super Pack looks tempting; maybe in a few days, when I get paid. Although the Commander Keen pack doesn't include episode 6: Aliens Ate the Babysitter.

Was that game ever actually finished though? I thought the version that was released was a demo/shareware and the final game was never released.

It doesn't include Keen Dreams either (for obvious reasons).

FormGen was the only company to commercially release it. Its also available on the ID Anthology that was released in 1996.

There were two shareware sets, episodes 1-3 (collectively Invasion of the Vorticans) and episodes 4-5 (Goodbye, Galaxy!).

Episode 6 was a commercial release, published by FormGen (according to Wikipedia. They also list an episode 3.5: Keen Dreams as a shareware release). I don't know why it's unavailable. Technical or license issues, most probably.

EDIT - beaten to it.

I think I'd forgotten about that one. Going by what Wikipedia says, though, it's rather a departure from the styles of the others.

Though Keen Dreams does differ from the other games, it was still enjoyable in its own right and I'm disappointed that its not included in the Steam release. And considering that Keen 6 is now abandoned software, I don't see why it couldn't have been included, especially as ID software released it in their 1996 compilation, as I previously mentioned.

Also, disregard the 'obvious reasons' comment... I had a point in mind when I wrote that, but I can't remember what it was. Confused

You won't migrate your XB360 gaming to the RE console, or do you have to do weird things to transfer over achievements, saves and stuff? I still think you should give Valkyria Chronicles or Heavy Rain a go, but I understand about your colour thing. As long as they get played at some point, it's all good Smile

I'll make sure I post a link Smile Probably won't get time to do it until the weekend though, it's going to be a busy week!

I haven't given the SMS a whirl in a while - the last game I played was last year when I tried to get through and finish Lord of the Sword. Almost got there but died. It gave me a sad face. Still, managed to get further than when I used to play the game when I was a kid, so I guess that's something Smile

Is that Wonder Boy III? I played a lot of the original on the Master System (tomahawk-chucking-skateboarder FTW) but whichever Wonder Boy game I played on the Mega Drive was "RPG-ish" and confused me. Razz
