So, is anyone going to be taking part in the riot-inducing sale Dick Smith will be having April 2nd. I just want the 3000 MS Point cards for $10 - Any games will be a bonus!

Not expecting to see any consoles in store, most likely will be hoarded by the employees. Kind of tempting to go down Sunday morning and hide all the cards in a different department. Wonder if i could get away with it.

I have gotten a group of friends together and we are hitting different stores around Perth monday morning. Interesting to see how it goes lol! Mostly interested in PSPs for friends who don't have them, and then anything else on top would be nice~ psn cards too

List of titles. Just on the bit I'm looking at they have Fable 3 Collector's Edition for $5 to give you and idea. Some new games as well.

Consoles are cheap. $200 for a Wii with Mario Kart or $40 for a PSP.

I'm going to get online early and try and get something before it's all sold out. Not entirely sure they've thought the sale through so I wouldn't be surprised if the site crashes. Also hoping that there is some sort of limit on purchases (one per customer or something) to stop the hoarding.

EDIT: 8am is when the sale starts online so I'll make sure I'm up early. Smile

EDIT EDIT: Protip: Bookmark the pages for the things you want so you can access them easy. What am I doing with my life?! D:

I wonder if I can use my staff discount with the sale Razz

I'm assuming this is some kind of liquidation related to Woolworths selling Dick Smith Electronics?

I'm hoping to nab some cheap MS Point cards, but I doubt I'll get in before all the good stuff is gone.

Just realised that the Dick Smith in Wollongong sucks and never stocks anything good. =(

Any idea how it's going to work for products on that list (mostly game + accessory type bundles) that don't appear on their website?

I'll bet they're just thrown in a bargain bin and forgotten about.

Looks as though some of it will be in-store only. I tried looking for Birth by Sleep on the site to bookmark, for instance, and it wasn't on there. Annoying as the local Dick Smith is shithouse.

I'm starting to think it's not worth bothering. People claiming to be DSE employees are popping up around the internet to say most stores don't have any of the desirable items in stock (e.g.: you'd be lucky to find a $100 xbox 360 anywhere even though there's a list price for it) and all the good stuff that really IS available will probably be hoarded by staff.
The alleged employees have outright admitted any $5 games or MS Point/XBL Gold subscription cards simply son't be available because they'll have nabbed 'em all.

It's basically a bait n switch but they can't be nailed for it because they're not actually advertising anything since the list was leaked, not officially promotional material.

If you don't have a mate holding items for you, you've got buckleys.

That's the impression I'm getting.

I'm keen on getting one of those PSPs for $40, but my schedule for Monday is full with meetings for most of the day but will try online before I head out to the office. Might be able to dash during a break between meetings to the nearest store for a nosey, but not counting on it.

Still, it's not like I'll be any worse off if I don't get anything, but checking the online store can't hurt. I like CG's idea too Smile

Don't suppose anyone is going to be at the Molyjam here in Melbourne on the weekend?

If you are, expect to see me, covering the event for Rocket Chainsaw.

The Dick Smith website is throwing up a high traffic volume page. No luck getting things that way. I'll go over town today and have a look at what they've got locally.

I wouldn't bother. As predicted, about 75% of the sale stock mysteriously vanished between yesterday and this morning, and there were lines outside DSE stores before opening.

Chances of there being anything left but copies of U Draw are pretty slim.

I'm going to call it. This was a scam to get you into the stores. Good if you can grab stuff but I've heard way too many reports of stores having no stock at all and people being turned away.

Online, the things I wanted either didn't markdown for some reason or were already out of stock when I jumped on (15 past Cool. Not to mention the fact that only about a third of the stuff was on the site.

My guess is they only had very limited stock of most of the stuff anyway so it was obviously going to sell fast. That, and the staff would obviously grab the good stuff for themselves.

A guy I know said he lined up, but the guy at the front of the line bought ALL the 360s/DS etc that were there, so there was practically nothing left to buy.

Gotta love it when stores don't have "x per customer" rules for sales...

The PS3 version is broken. Confused Unfortunately, the longer you play the game the more broken it's going to get. Around the 30 hour mark people start experiencing all sorts of silliness before the game eventually becomes unplayable.

I do know that they sort-of patched it to help a bit but it's still not fixed. Not sure if there are any other fixes out there?

In other news, Soul Calibur V is great. I'm having huge amounts of fun with it. It's got a huge focus on multiplayer which is irritating. Really sad that they are using a new announcer as well. That, and the fact there is no CG endings. Crying or Very sad

Still, the character creation mode is just as addictive as ever. It's far better than the offering in IV.

Just wishing they'd adopt a Sim-style editor for things like faces and whatnot. There is only, like, two good faces for male and female so everybody starts to look a bit similar. That, and no side-ponytail-that-goes-over-the-shoulder is the worst thing ever. Mad

Dear Valve,

The point of April Fools is to amuse people, not make cruel sick jokes about Half-Life 3.

Seconded. I was on the website before the sale started, and when I came back later and checked it (before 8:00 mind) the I found the sale had started early and EVERYTHING was out of stock. Going into stores would have been an even bigger waste of time. I hope whoever came up with this scam loses their job.

I have immortalised the DSE sale Smile

Whirlpoolers have noted gamers behaving badly with their usual modicum of social skills by hoarding like children unleashed in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.

I jumped onto the website at 8am AEST and got nowhere; dropped into a DSE during my lunch break and no luck there, though the person who served was really nice.

Other reports included people chucking wobblies to the point where police were called in.

Absolute disgrace.

The Hitler meme is entertaining though Smile

I thought that I was polite enough, considering that I went in and asked about the sale nicely. When I was given an abrupt response about it, and I do accept that people had probably been less than diplomatic about it previously, I responded with my usual grace and calm demeanour.

Most who know me know of my calming effect on those kinds of situations.

I think it was just a half-arsed job. They had a huge amount of stock they wanted to be rid of ASAP, so they just slashed prices and threw it to the wolves/consumers.

They intentionally held back stock because they're having a second sale from April 12th. So yeah, bit hard to not be suspicious.

Either way, they're morons.

Also, apparently it's been confirmed that DSE will be pulling out of games. They will still stock some, apparently, but not everything. So I guess just the "big" releases.

Cool, so that's been confirmed now? Might be able to swing past on the way into the office depending on my schedule for that day.

As I understand it, it's not going to be another gaming clearance sale and will just be a regular run of the mill sale. Apparently staff were told not to put everything out. A whistle blower of sorts has provided this information I should've pointed out earlier.

The other thing mentioned was that even if one store had one game available and nobody else did it made it on the list.

That's the kind of thing I was getting at when I said it was a half-arsed job. Though I agree that holding back stock from a supposed liquidation sale is dodgy indeed.

It happens everywhere though. For instance, we're advertising the Samsung Galaxy in our catalogue and it says the only place that doesn't stock them is Toowong. Problem is, we've only got a couple of the 64GB versions. We haven't stocked any of the other versions. Not excusing it of course.

Retail is incredibly dodgy and then they wonder why people don't want to shop anymore? Confused

I call that creative truth-telling. It's more dishonest than honest really, but not an outright lie.

The Samsung Galaxy what?

I wasn't aware any Galaxy devices went up as far as 64GB. Heck, 32GB is rare.

I've been thinking on the anti-consumer approaches being investigated as we go into the next gen (full/lengthy write-up here), and I've been thinking... with all the arrogance being flouted, and the angst between the retailers and publishers, combined with the rise of disposable portable gaming via smart devices, is there the possibility we're heading towards another crash?

I realise I'm not being terribly articulate, but the conversations happening between hardware devs, publishers, retailers and consumers seems to be happening without addressing the core of the problems everyone's whinging about except to give heavy-handed answers heavily against the consumer. Worried about second-hand game sales? Sell them cheaper at retail and broker an agreement between retailers to give a window where titles are not to be accepted as trade-in. As opposed to using PC DRM (because that's a really successful model...) and trying retail games to individual accounts/machines and locking the entire game down if you take it to a friend's place/play it on another machine in the same household/if you play the game on the same machine but with a different login/sell it to spend more money on games/stuff.

Heaven forbid your machine breaks down and you replace it with another machine, in which case you'll have to purchase everything all over again. IIRC, that's how Nintendo's VC works, so don't discount it.

And whose to say always-on internet connections will be required? It's already happening on PSN.

This is despite some very promising moves in this generation to take to things progressively (say what you will about its problems, but the PS3 demonstrates the most consumer-progressive console, at least at the outset of the machine) vs a complete-control mentality (typically personified by Nintendo).

Hardware developers want strong capital returns and high market penetration, publishers want more money, retailers want enough of a margin top make their business sustainable and consumers want to play games without paying through the nose and without DRM that makes it more difficult to play a legitimately purchase game on their system.

And for nerdy retro gamers or those with an interest in the social history of games, we want to be able to play today's games for years to come on our consoles. While I'm not sure how our PS3 will weather the next 30 years, I still like to crank out the A2600 for some gaming these days, and the prospect of being unable to do that is frustrating and disappointing.

Was wondering what others are thinking on this, if anything at all?

^ Pretty much agree.

Really, what irks me is the apparent consensus of the developers that games are an ephemeral medium, much like what happened in the early film and television industries. As attitudes within the industry change, so we started to see movies and TV kept. After all, we're still talking about Gone with the Wind, early Star Trek and Doctor Who these days, aren't we?

Unfortunately, I don't see the game industry's attitude changing anytime soon. It seemes to prefer remaking games over preserving the originals and making it possible to play them on current equipment. It's up to commited groups to preserve gaming history. It's why "abandonware" exists.

I'm more concerned about the shift to low-performance x86 hardware than I am about the DRM.

The irony is, the always on PC DRM will be the saving grace here - assuming steam is still running, old games will be just a few clicks away. You will be able to do the same with 360 / PS3 / Wii games ala marketplaces, but you will have to re-pay for games you already bought hard-copies for.

The most poignant opinion I read regarding the attempt to kill off the second hand game market was about growing up swapping/borrowing games with friends, buying their older games when you scrounged up the money or finally buying a game at a store cheap because it was pre-owned (which is pretty much not the case these days!).

These things will be killed off. I mean, I don't know if it's still like that these days or not anyway but it was certainly a big part of gaming growing up for myself.

As for DRM, I just don't quite understand the mentality of the publishers. If somebody is going to pirate it they're going to pirate it. You might convert a couple of people into sales, maybe, but all it's doing is pissing off people who pay for the game while the pirates are getting a version of the game they didn't pay for that is better (no internet connection required for instance).

These DRM measures are driving people to piracy because they're friggin' annoying.

Hilariously, the copy of Skyrim that I bought from GAME earlier this week was cheaper than the second-hand copy on the shelves.

Finished Mass Effect 3. Didn't hate it, but felt no where near as invested in it as I did the previous two. Second worst game end I've ever seen in over thirty years of gaming. Up to that point it was a fairly satisfying adventure game interrupted by random bouts of bland shooter rubbish. I can understand the backlash about that ending completely, but didn't really care enough by the time it happened to join the crymore chorus, despite how justified I believe the chorus is.

I'll be playing it again for sure. At least three times I'd say. Just to see how the different classes and different team members change stuff. Convinced Soldier was the wrong choice. Kicking myself for picking that class now.

I'm still playing through Mass Effect 3. Playing Vanguard, at about 16 hours in. I got the best ending in ME2, so ME3 actually plays pretty awesome. I love seeing how they made characters from the first game (like the Rachni Queen) have been portrayed.

The only way I can really seem to invest my time into this game is to go out searching for assests. I wish there was more to do than that... But hey, still better than the second game when it comes to searching for stuff. My god was searching for resources in the first two games a bore. Finding assests is much more worthwhile. It actually feels like I am doing something.

I saw that. Does anyone else read it that it's primarily an expansion of the ending cutscenes? I hope there's at least some playable content in it. For the price of free, I'll take it, but I'd have left it 'till later if there was a price to it.

Free is free, may as well take it. Who cares if it's playable or not.
