The Studio Ghibli movies in the showcase will be hitting DVDs from October 2004 with the following titles:

Laputa Castle in the Sky
Kiki's Delivery Service
Princess Mononoke

EDIT: here's some covers

In Addition we will be re-releasing Spirited Away in a Special Edition 2 disc set for $29.95 containing the 2 discs featured in the limited edition but will be repackaged in a regular keep case to match the rest of the collection.

Other titles that are also available as part of this collection:
Grave of the Fireflies

So thats the only change? Not remastered or anything like that?

Would there be any way of us (LE Slip case purchasers) getting the keep case so we can match it up with the rest of the collection? I would assume that ALL ghibli titles will match up right?

Thanks sly.

That would be really handy. I hate thinking that I bought the Limited Edition version and it's not going to match the rest of my collection, and I'm definitely not buying a second copy of it.

Eventually one will be released, but it will be quite a long time, probably.

Spirited Away special edition not matching rest of collection means suckiness.

Can we LE owners somehow get our hands on the empty SE keepcase?

Gah, I thought there would be...

Oh well, doesn't matter for me, I'll be snatching them up as soon as they come out anyway. Smile

This dosent seem like a very worthwhile idea. I imagine (and hope) Ghibli studios / Miyazaki will be releasing movies for some time to come, so any box set released now would quickly become defunct.

That is something that also came to my mind since I own a LE release...

I am wondering if a collection box will be made later, will we (LE of Spirited Away) able to fit the item nicely into the box with the rest of the collection ??? (i.e. I would love it if MadMan will make the box a bit wider in case people who own the LE version of S.A. would want to put their item with the rest of the collection in the box)

Why ??? You can always call the first box "Studio Ghibli Collection"...and if there is a second one then..."More Studio Ghibli Collection" or "Studio Ghibli Collection - The 2nd box"...or something like that...think of this like any other series which has more than one season (i.e. more than one box)

I have to say at first I wasn't to happy with the Ghibli covers. But after seeing them at EB the other day I must say I am extremely happy with them. They look great.

Isn't there a problem with 'Whisper of the Heart', to do with the use of 'Take me Home Country Roads' in the intro? It's in the Japanese version, but there was some copyright problem with releasing it in the US. Ironic, given the the subject matter of the movie.

That brings me to my question, though: do you have any plans - or if it became POSSIBLE, would you have any plans - to release some of the other Ghibli movies like 'Pom Poko', 'Only Yesterday', 'Nausicaa' and 'Porco Rosso'? - or are you tied up with waiting for Disney to stop squatting on them? i.e. can you deal directly with Japan, or do we have to wait for everything to come out on region 1 first?

BTW great cover for Princess Mononoke. Much prefer it to the region 1 I bought when I was in the USA, so I'll probably be stupid and end up with two of them, unless you'll sell me a slick Wink

I'm also desperately hanging out for Ocean Waves, but I remember hearing somewhere that it was pretty much a no-go, for some reason. Man, my memory's shot lately. Anyway, I hope at least *one* of my two favourite Ghibli films is released here - how else am I sposed to convert people to Ghibli-worship?

Don't know where you're getting those information from but it's untrue.

At the moment Kiki, Laputa, Mononoke are all 1 disc releases.

I've just got confirmation of how the storyboard feature will play out.

IT will be like how it was on the Spirited Away SE disc.
A select few scenes will have storyboards, and also a comparison feature.
This is accessible in the extras section.

The feature is encoded at the highest quality available.

No they are and will be 1 disc versions.
Also...

Dear fans and valued customers,

Due to replication errors causing the DVD to freeze at the layer break point, the highly anticipated release of Princess Mononoke will have a revised date of October 29. Other Ghibli titles Kikiís Delivery Service and Laputa Castle in the Sky plus all October titles are unaffected.

Madman Entertainment, wishes to apologies for the inconvenience this may have caused to retailers and customers and hopes that you can look forward to this new date.

I think you should remove the information about "# Feature Length Alternative Angle Storyboards" that you have on all current releases from Ghibli. Didn't you say that there was a segment of selected storyboard to film comparisons? Not good for the DVDsite if the info is incorrect.
Thanks for releasing these.
And did the DVDs get converted from NTSC masters of from film masters?

Question: the Ghibli site says that your release of Pom Poko will have an English language track, whereas Whisper of the Heart, for instance, will be Japanese language only. Does this mean that Disney have actually made an English dub of Pom Poko?

Thanks

A few questions-

1. Like Mr. Caesar asked, will you be able to send out spare keepcases for the Spirited Away Special Edition? The whole "Limited" appeal has been pretty much taken away (and I hate Digipacks), and we're stuck with a copy that doesn't match the rest of the titles.

2. You're releasing "The Cat Returns" before the scheduled (as far as we know) Disney version in your 2nd wave of titles (I think? Correct me if I am wrong). There's no English dub of it in the Japanese release, nor any others. Will this be released sub-only, or will you have a dub made locally? Or what?

3. Will any of the Ghibli releases be Japanese with English subs only?

Thanks Smile (and don't get angry if I got something wrong)

But it shouldn't match the rest of the titles anyway...because it is special...because it is limited...what is the point of owning the limited edition if it is going to look like the same as the normal 2-disc edition...

My only worry is that if one day box will be released to house all Ghibli movies...and whether how limited edition can fit in it !!!

What's the point of owning a Limited Edition with inferior packaging, if a cheaper replication with superior packaging is going to come out?

Why do you consider the new release to have a superior packaging compared to the Limited Edition ? Won't it be similar to Grave of the Fireflies cover ??? If similar to Grave of the Fireflies then I don't see how that "normal" cover can be considered superior to the beautiful Limited Edition one...

The covers are around about the same, only the Special Edition has less clutter than the LE one (I think, anyway). Artwork aside, I consider Amaray cases to be more durable and reliable than Digipacks, along with being easier to use. THis is why I consider the Special Edition to be superior, and this is why I would like to get a Special Edition case, ontop of wanting to have collection continuity. I am aware that there are those who prefer the LE packaging, and that's perfectly fine. However, packaging aside, the Limited Edition has lost its primary redeeming feature. I prefer the Special Editions cover, and therefore I would like to get that cover and case without having to shell out money for yet another copy.

First off, these covers are WAY better than the US ones. I never understood why the US went with that stupid coin for Mononoke, and then Kiki and Castle got these horrible photoshopped covers.

Yes, reversable covers are the way to go. Big SKy Video did this with their release of Watership down--and now given that choice, I feel cheated when I see the reverse sides of covers blank.

i was a bit concerned with this since the r1 versions of the next three films were all 2disc sets but with further research i was able to find that the only extra missing from the r1 and r4 versions was some behind the scenes witht he english dubbing which im guessing was just fluff anyway so im glad that mm were able to stick them all on 1 disc. honestly though having a 2nd disc on the cat returns was a bit stupid, i mean it only goes for 75mins, there was no need for a 2nd disc.

You know if you want a box for the Studio Ghibli collection, you can go to your local swapmeets and they will sometimes be selling blank boxes. Then you can make your own custom cover for it and stick it on!
