ni_jal isn't that hard to find. You see him at the Tamarket stall at any random anime con you go to.

Come to think of it, I have seen some forum members off the street or at expo's.

I think I have seen ni_jal a dozens of times at Tamarket stalls at expo's.
But the funny thing is I didn't know he was a forum member until someone pointed it out a picture of him.
I've seen and talked to beardedgeek once at supanova but that was probably for only like a minute about something, but this was years ago and yet he didn't even know it was me on the forum.

I recognize Sly at every supanova expo these days...he's not that hard to miss once you know the face.
He even introduces himself at expo's which an even bigger giveaway.

other than that I tend to see people who post there faces on "Don't Look Me" topic and so everybody who's a member knows what they look like now.

Guess I haven't been going to that many cons lately. Last I saw him was a few years back over at the Kinokuniya.

He hasn't been here since he had his post count removed and his posts down as guest.

Not long after that he stopped showing up here. A shame really.

I haven't gone to an anime convention for at least 7 years.. I wonder if I should take my daughter to the next one that comes around.

On a similar note, the announcement of a PAX Australia for next year is exciting Smile

Madman staff started coming here less and less, the older crew moved on, no announcements being made outside of Facebook, pretty much also Facebook... Pick one.

It sucks.

It did become crazily strict here for a while, didn't it? It's almost as if as Madman got bigger the ego grew and they felt the need to be 'more professional'. Then they just kind of forgot the forum they established and then strangled.

Some people just say forums in general are dead, but I disagree immensely.

Forums are definitely not dead, only certain kinds of forums (forums with no purpose.) Forums won't die because Facebook is a poobah place to have a serious discussion. Actually, facebook is just a poobah place fullstop.

I agree with Tachi, Madboards died 2005ish when they became uber strict. And before anybody points out my join date, this is my 3rd account. I was a member 2 years prior.

PS: New drinking game, take a drink every time I say the word 'forum'.

Nanny policy my ass, you ain't seen over-zealous mods until you've posted on The Escapist forums!

I think that forums in general seem to have died, aside from the ones which aren't focused around simple chatting (i.e tech support forums). I blame Facebook, as people seem to have moved there for their chatting needs. But Facebook is full of people you know, how's someone suppose to meet strangers to chat to? Hang out at bus stops?

Oh, I'm sure there are worse situations out there, no doubt.

My point was that trying to maintain a PG-13 level atmosphere on here really dulled things down a bit.

I have notice the forums generally get quite in between 'release dates' in that people only come around when something new is released or announced.

No one can generally like to hang around when the forum gets boring due to people mostly just waiting for the next monthly anime releases.
Any forum can get stale due to 'waiting periods' but its just up to who wants to talk about something interesting during the waiting periods.

@Tachikoma I actually kinda like the PG-13 atmosphere as it generally add more of a well mannered guideline than other forums with is just pure swear-a-thon...and sometimes it feels like your talking to a convicted criminal who has been granted internet access to his jail cell. Laughing
Because anime is for all ages then we must respect our manners for all ages as well.
Though there are times when people forget there manners and abuse the rules, and those are the ones that generally get booted from the forum which is the ones we don't anymore.

Also most people find other anime fan base forums which are more dedicated to a particular anime/manga.
Fan base forums are generally more fun because you can talk to someone with the same interests as you who follows the same anime/manga.
Also some fan base sites like Skullknight.net for example which is dedicated to everything Berserk, but when you come to madman forum to talk about Berserk here, you find there's very little to no fans here or even a dedicated forum topic for Berserk.
Since there's not dedicated topic or major fans then its best to go to a fan base site like skullknight.net instead.

SO I think that's the main problem with madman forum is that there losing to fan bases forums around the world which can attract more dedicated fans.

Facebook is the also the new evil so to speak.
We have all heard bad things on what facebook has done to people to the point you can call it stalkbook or facebook can get you killed or that your facebook apge is still around after your dead...well you've heard it all.
So facebook can generally be partially to blame as well.

That seems to tie in a bit with my experience, a lot of big/busy forums have died down a bit, partly because people have moved on from the subjects, and partly because the likes of facebook have taken over from the casual chat sections Sad

The PG13/family friendly atmosphere is nice, it means you can usually go into a thread and know it's not likely to get you in trouble if someone sees you reading it, and I don't have to worry about if a friend/family member can see my screen.

I've always found the PG-13 atmosphere to be an odd one to strive for when it imposes limitations that we generally don't have in this country. What with our PG rating being 15 and having more freedom in what is suitable for youngins.

Maybe I've spent too much time around Americans, but isn't a basic PG rule set pretty standard -- particularly for a commercial enterprise?

This is a public place. You could quite literally equate it to a place of business (store), if you're so inclined. It's a standard expectation of social public conduct that you behave within "PG" guidelines. You might exchange vulgarities and such with a friend, but you don't (usually) broadcast it for the entire surrounding area [eg; a public forum]. Is it really so restrictive?

If there is a genuine perception of restriction -- that may be one of the interesting aspects of the impact "social networking" has on forums.

Social networking revolves around the individual and allows for complete customization of content. That means enforced standard practises don't require minutiae. The big, broad evils are banned from the host network, but it's the responsibility of the individual to moderate themselves.

If your personal threshold is well beyond PG content (as it is for many of us), the constant and dominant exposure to that services may influence your expectations without fair context. A public forum requires a reasonable median average to please the most people by its very nature. It is a different set of circumstances within a similar medium.

I don't think you can pin the fall of forums (like Madman) entirely on social networking, though.

In the booming days at the turn of the millennium "social networking" in its current forum was a massive part of the growth of the forums. Chat programs like ICQ and MSN were compliments to the tight-knit community of the forum. While Facebook offers an unstructured, private social equivalent that overlaps with Forum logic, the dichotomy can still work the same if there's sufficient motivation.

The pressure is on the supply of that motivation and I think it's fair to say that is what's dried up.

Again, in those booming 90s/00s, you had the influx of major anime releases, past and present. It was a cultural phenomenon bolstered by quality, variety and accessibility. The beauty of congregating on the forums was to share mutual interests, but also benefit from the discoveries that were known to be around every corner. You were finding about new releases, older releases, television events, and even the birth of live-events (cons in Australia).

Madman may have expanded their reach into more genres (beyond anime, import and even cult releases), but that hasn't picked up the slack because that's jumping into a bigger, broader, older, internationally dominated pond.
I still buy and enjoy a variety of Madman products, but it's usually only anime-related content that arrives me back to the site and forum. Anime products that pique my interest are few and far between, these days. Other content is usually and historically catered to by more established investment in other dedicated outlets.

The forum could be buoyed by unique staff-supplied content, but that can be a lot of hard work, particularly when expansion favours taking the wares to the people/market (Facebook), rather than asking them to come to you. Which means it's up to the community to fund itself. If the community isn't replenishing, it becomes a vicious cycle.

The good thing is that we're still here.

The Madman forums still function well. Still have a pulse. Haven't fallen into such ruin that they're ghost towns filled with spambot tumbleweeds. If you've experienced truly "dead" forums, you know how bad it can get. Really, forums don't die. They're abandoned. And a forum isn't abandoned as long as people care. The lifeblood of any forum is the people and sometimes you get what you put into it.

... Of course, if people put a lot of long winded articles discussing the discussion of the discussion, that probably won't help, either. Embarassed

I've been responsible for a large forum recently, so it just happens to be a subject of interest.

10 more years! 10 more years! Wooooo!

Could have posted back in October last year but in the last couple years i've been coming here not so frequently, in part due to a certain "Front page of the internet".

Still good to see some familiar faces still make an appearance here and there however Very Happy

The front page now reminds me of some porno sites, which is unfortunate. Much prefer the less cluttered looking version.

I may make more time here, now that I'm starting to import anime again.

I've started watching more anime again which has gotten me to come back here. Which also reminds me I need to update my collection list as it's been a couple years at least.

Did you have previous account 10 years ago.
Since if you still had and account dated 10 years ago then it should be still active and show the date you joined...then we'll know your back.

This years Sentai is done, and I am sad.

I was loving ToQger and Ninninger is leaving me dry so far. I have become a massive toku fan. Kamen Rider Gaim was all kinds of fantastic.

Randomly posted something earlier. Realised this year is 10 years. Oh man.

So yeah, this place is really dead though. I stopped coming on after everybody realised I was an A SPHINCTER SAYS WHAT and haven't really been on since. It's strange to come back here though and some of the names are instantly recognisable.

Going to assume this place won't get any more traffic though.

How is everybody doing though? I'm now nearly 25, so one of those "proper adults", I do some writing and work a **** job to pay for those things that require money.

I'm likely speaking to nobody though so if anybody does stumble upon this later then yes, yes I am very mad and enjoy talking to empty rooms. So mad indeed.

EDIT: I swear I had more posts as well...

So I do haha. TBH, I have no idea how I got so many posts over the years as it felt as though I wasn't contributing much. I also believe I had more before I left? It's been a while but I may have been close to cracking 10k (if I didn't already)?

In any case, quite drunk and remembered this was a place so popped back in. Was kinda hoping things would be more lively but you can't win it all.
