Note a: I don't claim to know the entire process and difficulty of licensing a show, if I have any information wrong then please correct me!

Note b: I have no ill will against any Australian anime company, they have all released some gems which I proudly own and will cherish for a long time.

I've been following sites such as AnimeNewsNetwork and the Fandom Post (username digtotheheavens) for a very long time and keep track of licensed shows and dvd/bd releases. Very recently, I've personally seen a much lower anime output in Australia, Hanabee are more focused on Rooster Teeth content/merch, while Madman seem to be picking up newer content for some of their shows such as Danmachi, Mahouka, and Accel World. Siren Visual have dropped off the radar after a staff change only releasing new volumes of Durarara!.

This season on Animelab, outside of long running shonen titles, there are only 3 simulcast titles. all Sentai shows. This is purely speculation on my end so don't take my word as fact, but the Funimation x Crunchyroll partnership, and also Sony's purchase of Funimation have somehow complicated any new license opportunities, possibly of them being busy tying up negotiations?

I believe none of the Crunchyroll licensed titles have made it to Australia via physical release. I've personally been wanting to get my hands on shows such as Mob Psycho 100, Myriad Colours Phantom World, Keijo!!!!!, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (& also Free! season 1), etc. These titles I believe haven't been licensed in the UK either, but someone please correct me if they have been.

I also have a feeling of Sony's purchasing of Funimation have slowed things down for Madman, the first sign being Universal AU releasing My Hero Academia themselves, and more recently Umbrella Entertainment releasing In the Corner of the World in Australia. Also, their newer titles haven't made their way down here either, which I thought shows such as Black Clover and Blood Blockade Battlefront S2 would have been 100% sure hits for Animelab. I have my fingers crossed for Hyouka!

I don't know if anyone shares my concern, but there are some truly great shows which need some love down under, but I feel is being prevented by licensing difficulties. I don't expect any answers as I understand that negotiations are all behind the scenes and are not public, but I would like to hear something at least slightly hopeful.

Love Live! Sunshine! is Funimation. Granted, with the increase of streaming services, it's hard to keep up with all the simulcasts. I wanted to watch Kabaneri in previous seasons, but also Girls' Last Tour and I think something else this season.

Seem to have missed that one! The 3 Sentai titles I saw were UQ Holder, Umaru-chan and My Girlfriend is Shobitch. Yeah I agree I feel simulcasts right now are all over the place, Netflix was another one that I didn't mention in my original post, I'll be using my trial to watch Violet Evergarden when that airs. I don't believe Netflix get in the way of physical releases though, as Funimation have released the Seven Deadly Sins, and Madman/Sentai have done Ajin: Demi Human.

I different stance to you on the issue. Certainly Madman's bread and butter is still anime, even though they've had a number of successful art house films in theaters. For example they've released about half a dozen or more anime films to cinemas in the last year and they've embarked on a series of successful anime conventions across the country. Even small conventions have fairly big name seiyu as guests in this county which still blows my mind. Though I agree Siren Visual seems to have not released anything in a long time, Hanabee seems be releasing less.

In a general sense, physical media is on a downward spiral. The problem with Australia is the market is still a niche one and unlike the US video distributors are still required by law to have their material classified, which isn't all that cheap. I wish no ill will on the Australian market, but if you do love your physical media, get a region free BD player. I wouldn't have been able to get Macross Delta or Outlaw Star or Patlabor on BD if I hadn't got one.

With steaming video, it's a bit of a mess at the moment with several companies trying to grab a slice of the action and anime titles being fragmented across a number of sites, some free, some paid or requiring extra payment for anime on top of the initial fee for the site. I really think in the long term Animelab can't compete, which is a goddamn shame as I would rather give my money to them than Crunchyroll (due to their less than ethical origins). I think over time the bubble will burst and Crunchyroll will remain the last one standing. Perhaps the only solution is to get Tunnelbear or some other VPN to dodge the anti-consumer region blocks.

I think eventually you'll have to expand your horizons beyond what is available here if you want to buy anime in any physical release in English or see it on streaming services. However I think we'll still be getting a lot of stuff here for a while yet.

To be very honest I think we did pretty well. Whilst it is true that we have not been able to grab a hold of some other titles at the end of the day it is better for us to focus on what we can get licensed for what titles are best valued at rather than trying to over pay for a massive amount of titles and never making that money back, that's a faster way to run ourselves out of business in the long run.

What we also have that is stronger than some other platforms are rights to some of the most beloved back catalogue titles as well.

You've made some keen observations, at this point in time we don't have any agreements to distribute any of the Crunchyroll owned titles, however that's not to say we won't be able to in the future. The game is long and staying in it for as long as possible is what we're about rather than over spending on titles just for the sake of having a title.

As others have pointed out we have expanded into other fields in recent years, it's a natural evolution as we look beyond relying solely on home video.

You may have noticed that we have dramatically increased the amount of anime available in cinemas. In 2017 alone we have been responsible for these theatrical releases:

We will also start off 2018 with Studio Ponoc's Mary and the Witch's Flower

We have also started to run our own Anime Festival events in 3 major cities, again no easy feat. We've always positioned ourselves as being by fans for fans and our current goals lie in connecting with fans a lot more as well.

I though you did awesome this year too with the films. Not sure if other states were the same, but here in WA you also got these films into a lot more cinemas for more screenings which was awesome.

Earlier films years ago (e.g. Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Ponyo) were only shown in a few locations (Hoyts Carousel and Luna Leederville) for a few sessions each. Fairly certain Hoyts was dub only too.

Your Name (Late 2016) and A Silent Voice were in the local cinemas, and running constant sessions for a week or two. And the cinemas were running both Japanese and English language versions. Never thought I'd see a sub Anime film in Joondalup.

Didn't you also get all the Evangelion films replaying this year too including a marathon? (Google says July but I missed them)

Madfest Perth had way more attendance than I was expecting. Hope it was enough so it'll come back in 2018.

That's a good perspective to see it, one thing I didn't think about at the time of writing my original post is the number of catalog titles being added, and also titles from Hanabee, Sony Universal, etc. The effort is certainly being put in!

Very reasonable reason, personally for me it's uplifting that the crunchyroll titles are likely still on the radar for whenever they do become available. I've been purchasing titles since 2009 and things have certainly changed over time, and I think Madman have done well adjusting to current trends, such as the rise in popularity for conventions. I think it's fair to say (and something I should remember from now!) is that Madman is now so much more than just a dvd distributor.

I have definitely noticed, as back the day the extent of anime in cinema was during the Reel Anime showings every 2 years, and now I see many anime films as part of regular cinema showings! This was also something that at the time of writing I didn't really think about, I have been to quite a few when I had a chance to go, and the experience is something you truly can't get at home.

Find a better source for anime releases in Australia, as they have not decreased at all. Madman still releasing a large amount of anime every year, in a variety of genres.

The anime market has dramatically changed in Australia for the better, compared to the distant past:
Majority of anime series been released in parts, rather than single volumes.
Anime series been released with only English subtitles.
Many anime series been released in HD, via Blu-ray and streaming.
More companies releasing anime (Hanabee Entertainment, and Universal Studios).

Streaming has always been a more variable market, especially as more new players (Amazon, Netflix) are opening up in Australia. I doubt the Cruncyroll and Funimation partnership will make much difference, since they don't always have Australian rights. The majority of titles from Funimation, still aren't available to Australians via Crunchyroll.

A local company failing to license titles you are interested in, doesn't mean the local market is in trouble.

If you really want to see a dying market, look at the local releases for western cartoon series. With only selected Cartoon Network and Marvel cartoon series been released in Australia.

So how do one like me know what titles are owned by Crunchyroll and ones that are not.
Basically I'm saying how do we all know madman is guaranteed to get a particular title or not?
For Instance I'm waiting on the new Berserk 2016 series...I can watch it streaming on Animelab, but will there ever be a physical media release in Australia in the future?

But will any title on Animelab make it to physical media is a pretty good reasonable question.
So far most Animelab titles that are showing now are current new DVD releases or sometimes showing past old anime shows.

But then you get the particular recently added new shows just released on Animelab like Berserk 2016 that's now showing will it ever get released on DVD?

Same question goes for shows that start on Foxtel, Netflix or whatever streaming sites...But does that mean that it will eventually make it to physical media some day?
Otherwise I feel the ONLY way to watch new anime and/or check out new anime title these days is buy the DVD's or to watch it streaming on the ones I'm thinking of buying on DVD.

Everything seems to be going streaming but STILL I like to get a physical disc of it eventually as then I save my download limit and internet costs on other stuff other than just streaming.

If it gets to the point that the only way to watch anime is streaming then that will be very saddening.
I still like good ol DVD and Blu ray media.

Well currently, Anime Limited in the UK has released/releasing Kiss Him, Not Me and Re:Zero. Also, Free! season 1 and Mob Psycho 100 (and a few others) are also Anime Limited plans for the future. So they are negotiating with CR at least.

Madman also released KanColle, which is a CR title, but correct me if I'm wrong, but the Madman retail packaging doesn't have any CR or Funi logos. KonoSuba also saw exclusivity on AnimeLab despite being a CR title in the US, so I assume that those CR titles were licensed directly from Japan by Madman/AnimeLab and not via CR. Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure Universal Sony licensed that since at Smash 2016, the copyright for promo images on the Smash website were attributed to them.

Also, CR's increased presence on funding anime series themselves, and even being on the production committees (like for A Place Further than the Universe) can possibly mean that less titles will be available physically in Australia since nobody (except for maybe Universal Sony) has negotiated with them for Australian release yet, from what I can tell given the limited info I have access to. And even then, Universal Sony don't seem to be releasing any new anime except for My Hero Academia, and titles like Netoge and The Heroic Legend of Arslan: Dust Storm Dance seem to be released by Madman and not Universal Sony despite those being NUEJ titles. So the future does look a bit bleak IMHO.

As someone who lives in the US, I can't claim to know the whole story behind the anime industry in Australia, but what I hear in this thread does sound concerning, and I can see where some are coming from with considering a region-free BD player.

That said, I respect Madman's decision to stay in the game as long as possible, and I hope they can for the fans over there. Thumbs up for that.

I do recommend supporting the official releases if you can, but if you can't, then I understand.

I buy MM titles when I can and sometimes multiple copies like Your Name. Got the disc scratched up a couple of times, so I had to buy another copy. Haha

Well, it's been a while since I opened this topic and haven't responded in a while due to some harsh personal events. I still have my worry for Hanabee who have released very little in recent months besides the Initial D films (last released 2 months ago, and nothing since then), and Siren Visual who have just about dropped off the radar entirely.

Madman though, I have relief! Cinema releases are still strong (I just saw Penguin Highway, which was a great watch), and we are getting the Crunchyroll & Funimation titles that seemed to be in lockdown while their partnership was in effect, with Mob Psycho and Kabaneri releasing here in a few weeks. Also, I believe since I started the topic, Madman have switched to blu-ray only for new titles, which is a big thing for us as before we just had selected titles which had expected to do well. Also to clarify, yes there were titles I mentioned that I really wanted to buy, but I was thinking of the availability for us in terms of physical releases and Animelab streaming. There have been some good points made though through the discussion here.

I was just thinking of anime at the time of starting the topic (almost a whole year ago), but yeah I have a number of cartoon dvd's with many missing seasons. Some cartoons recently such as Ed, Edd & Eddy, Dexter's Lab and Courage the Cowardly Dog have been restored and released on Amazon UK in HD, so I think it's an opportunity for a digital/blu-ray release here. We've gotten a blu-ray for Samurai Jack, and for newer CN series like Steven Universe and Over the Garden Wall, so I'm fairly hopeful for the others!

I think there was some some concern from myself and maybe others, although it's never been downright awful! Personally with our dollar being so bad, it makes me hesitant to purchase from overseas, so besides my few R1 dvd's I mostly own R4 and Region 2 discs.

Not on topic, but you might want to buy another copy soon. They reauthored the discs, and fixed errors in the English dub and some video errors.

Hanabee seems to have given up on physical anime releases recently. Like they haven't released part 2 of UBW standard (the UK got it out on time, so I have no clue why Hanabee can't), and the Monogatari series releases seems to be halted altogether for them. Hanabee has mainly been focussing on their Rooster Teeth and their merchandising lines, and the most anime related thing they've done is promote HIDIVE.

I heard that Siren Visual's distributors went out of business, and is why they haven't been releasing anything. I don't know if it's true or not, but either way, Siren really looks close to death.

You're also forgetting Universal Sony. They've had their brief flirt Funimation for My Hero Academia, Yuri on Ice, Black Clover, and In Another World with my Smartphone, which has been great for them since most of these series are popular. And their NBCUni Japan holdouts (Drifters and Berserk 2016) are getting noticed. Drifters recently came out with a limited release, and time will tell for when Berserk will come out.

It just seems that Madman has a near monopoly on newer anime releases, not because of them, but because the others have aren't doing anything anime related.

Pretty much the theatrical releases and the 1990's Sailor Moon blu-rays are the only Madman releases I'm interested in these days.

The dollar has improved somewhat. Also with Amazon finally giving into the ATO and collecting the GST, I've started buying titles again from Japan. I still prefer the UK All the Anime sets over US stuff, especially the stuff Aniplex puts out the US which can be rather poor quality considering the price and comparison with Japanese releases. Then again I've never been to fussed with most Australian releases due to relatively poor packaging, absurdly large classification labels and sometimes poor authoring (which isn't a problem anymore as all BDs and most DVDs are dupes of UK and US discs).

Unfortunately that means paying Japanese sales tax as well as the GST the redeliverer charges (I reduce the customs amount by about the amount of the Japanese sales tax, wrong, I know, but the Aus Gov can stuff it; they're so unctious about not levelling a tax on a tax, they can take their own medicine. Or take it up with Amazon. Mostly it's only a matter of a few dollars). Postage from Amazon is mostly free, so the major cost is shipment.

In between the original Amazon AU customer ban and now, I bought a lot of my wishlist directly from Japan when I went over there in July/August for Wonfes and Comiket. I have used CD Japan begrudgingly since, but they don't stock everything and charge full retail + 10% GST (yes, bizarrely they are complying with the ATO's wishes).

Really don't know if it is worth it to go though the hassle and maybe extra expense of using a proxy.
