In a nut shell the quality is just as bad as the American release (however the compression is better but the master must be horrid!), and the Digial Overlays are present. Screw ADV, (I know it isn't your fault Madman). I think I will just buy the Japanese DVD's, Rip out the video, Combine it with the English Audio track and Master my own DVD's.

Trust me it is. Volume 2 is supposed to look at bit better (in the U.S.), however it is still nowhere near as good as it should and could be. I pray ADV purchase a better Digital master off of Gainax, instead of using the Analogue NTSC masters at present. However Madman did a great job with the Menu's, which ARE better than the NTSC disc. ADV just sent madman the same master they used, digital overlays (yuk) and all... I want the original Japanese video, with no alterations, no overlays, and no hard sub translation overlays. If you want signs or whatever to have a translation there SHOULD by a sub-title option for this...

ADV's master is a digital video master and they did make a copy of that which Madman did use.

The reason why ADV's master is not as good as Gainax's is because Gainax's master has some shakiness in it and ADV attempted to fix that problem but that process has undesirable side-effects, which is why it ain't used on DVD 2 and up.

Cheers
Steve

God, some people are picky! I got the DVD yesterday and found it to be good, apart from the stupid english pasted in. That is all that is wrong with it. The sound is good, the picture is sharp and the menu is great too.

Remember it was a TV series made 5 years ago! No one had DVD's or 5 channel sound on videos then. I think that the DVD is acceptable and don't worry about it.

The english pasted in had been changed anyway for the next DVD. I think madman did a great job on it.

P.S. Did you expect a HUGE difference from the NTSC release?

I have got Eva Collection 2 DVD from America and I compared it to a friend's Japanese Copy of Eps 5-8. The results have made me give up on ADV. The Japanese picture is sooooooooooo much better. A good comparison would be to look at the quality of the English overlays (ie The lovely suite plarque), and imagine the entire episode looking slightly better. THE JAPANESE PICTURE IS THAT GOOD. It is also based on a digital FILM master, which makes it look a **** load better on a progressive scan TV of computer monitor. It is clear now that ADV only have access to Digital Video Masters based on a composite source, (NTSC) and are of Extremely bad condition. I suggest ADV reach deep into their wallets and get some brand new masters off of Gainax, perhaps before their rival Manga releases the Movies on DVD compressed from Top Quality Gainax Masters...

Oh and about the shakiness on the Masters, I received tis information direct from Gainax, "There may be momentary left-right screen shifts during scene changes. There is no cause for concern, however. Such effects are done deliberately, at the director's discretion."

Just a couple of more points : )
1. ADV have indeed got access to all the sound masters needed to create a Dolby Digital 5.1 up-mix. (Hell there are 50 year old movies that came out with mono mixes, coming out on DVD with excellent 5.1 mixes.)

2. I love this series and want to see it done the way it should and CAN be done. DVD DONE RIGHT...

Poor video on the aussie eva DVDs was unfortunatly a certainty given the ADV release. I doubt that even if ADV had better masters (they are ment to be re-doing the first disk) they would give them to Madman. Just the same as Ginax not giving decent masters to ADV. Sad but true.

BTW Hi all

Thank god. When I first read this I thought it was really bad. I couldn't care less about a little better than video quality. I can't even tell the difference.

------------------
I have plotted and schemed to make my girlfriend (now wife) jealous for my own diabolical reasons (Side Note: I'm the Evil Twin, Bloo-Ha-Ha), However, I am not satisfied that she be jealous of another woman, oh no! I have conspired to make her jealous of an inanimate object! Namely, Body Pillow! I have often cold-shouldered her in favor of hugging my Body Pillow, I have arrived at her house with Body Pillow strapped in the front seat (upright posistion, of course. The personification of Body Pillow is most important in this maniacal scheme) and made her sit in the back. I extoll body pillow's virtues above her own, i.e.: "Body Pillow never nags me"; "Body Pillow like the way I dress"; "Body Pillow would never watch TV all night long". When we moved into our new home together, I carried Body Pillow across the threshold. The pay-off is when she gets really angry and tosses Body Pillow around the room, baring her teeth and growling like a wild feral creature. Such lapses in common sense and decorum amuse me to no end! Long live body pillow! BLOO-HA-HA! Ha

I hope it was a joke.

This sounds like the same problem with Gunsmith Cats video tape 3. I don't think that problem was ever fixed!

I just got the first collection and there were no picture problems. It seemed fine to me, easily better than video quality.
My problem was with the sound, at some stages it seemed to go much quieter.

i belive cartoon gallery www.cartoongallery.com.au do DVD imports
It will be a hell of a lot more Expensive than Madmans or ADV's

About Manga getting Gainax Copies...I doubt it will happen...The reason that the Movies have been delayed is coz 1) gainax are selling them at a high price
2)Manga and ADV have been having a little war.

Personally i belive Manga will do a better job that ADV
DVD 01 NTSC sucks the english really ****ed me off and the DVD menu sucked.

DVD 02 was better but the ****ing Trailers were at teh start.

god i hope DVD 03 will be better ( get it in 3 weeks time :-d)
