Hey gang!
Here's the scoop - in episode one Shinji is on the phone and we see a glimpse of a girl standing in the street.

I've just realised I could pause the DVD and get a clear image - but I'll do that later.

Anyways I thought it was Rei [to be confirmed], and well - could someone explain this?!?
I don't want any of your phili BS about "oh you have to experience the whole series first to truly be elevated to understanding"

I just want a straight out answer to - what the hell is it all about?

It's just a plain introduction to another character. He thought he saw Rei.

Wow. I can almost hear some folks filing their teeth.

Yes, Shinji sees Rei for a split second, but the Rei he sees is in school uniform when the real Rei would be doing her mummy impersonation, all bandaged and boo hoo. At the end of the EVA movie, Shinji sees the same figure of Rei. So, what's all that about?

I'm inclined to agree with Access that it's like a bracketing of the story but if you don't want the philo-b/s, let's just say it's artistic license. Shinji sees her but I don't think it's meant to be her or another Rei clone or a muppet in a dress. It's probably just there to pique your interest.

Plot related? Naah, I'm yet to be convinced. Somebody could probably come up with a lengthy and terminally confusing explanation as to how it "signifies Shinji's initial contact with the forces that will henceforth influence and shape his further psychological and emotional development" or the like, but it won't be me. I'm too slack.

Feel free to hack my head off with a sharpened onion if I'm mistaken, everyone.

Philadelphia??

It's not that he thinks he saw rei, at that point he has not met her yet! Later on you find out that rei is cloned from the DNA of both lilith and shinji's mother, when he sees her it's like an apperition of his mother watching over him, well that is what i think anyway.

Isn't it like a deja vu thing?
Like the Rei everyone sees before they die?
I thought it was just a glimps of what is to come.

Also, taking it into consideration that this happens at the beginning of the series, it adds mystery. Even so, this might be a sign of a new beginning for Shinji, just like his situation at the end of the final movie when he shes Rei yet again.

I dont know, or at least i cant express what i truly think.

Cheers

no, it's just an introduction to the character, shinji sees rei, then in the split second he turns away, she runs off. It's meant to show the athletic ability of rei, as is seen several times throughout the series, eg. when the girls at the school are swimming and she's too good a swimmer to join in their shinanigans.
psst, it's definately rei, and i don't think it really makes a difference to the series.

Yeh, that Rei chick. She's pretty buff ya know. I hear she can bench-press three times her own weight. She uses the Eva's just for show. We all know she could whoop an Angel's ass with a meat cleaver and a pogo stick!

Considering how easily Rei reduced Nagisa's (Sp?) AT field to a waste of time Id think she wouldnt even need the cleaver... but the thought of Rei on a pogo stick....

*is slowly turning into a pervert*

and as for bench pressing three times her weight? all im gonna say is EoE and are you sure its 'just' three?

As for the *Rei* Seen in the anime... did you really need the still frame DVD to recognize her? *wasted a tape on a slow motion vcr* ok so the DVD does have its advantages...

"What... NO PIZZA!!!" Reaction to starvation.

Hmmm... well... how about this... oh... brace yurself (grins)

Lets look at the situation for a second.

1. Shinji glances over his shoulder, sees rei
2. Takes a quick look at some psycho birds
3. Looks back
4. Rei is gone

Now think why would they include such a strange and out of place scene in the series? is it really so out of place? think about it, rei is an embodiement of his mother (to some extent) being that she is created from yui and lilith, lilith is an angel, the next thing shinji sees is an angel. I propose to you that the coming together of these concepts in shinji's mind created the illusion of the collective.

Now a more reasonable answer.

In the movies, rei leaves gendo to protect shinji. It is obvious that rei feels something for shinji, a love which is more of one from a mother to her child. What you can call a "protective" love. There are a few times in the anime where rei protects shinji, the most obvious the big shield thing. If rei leaves gendo to help shinji then isn't it feasable that rei might be "watching over" shinji in the dangerous situation which he is in? isn't it possible that rei wants to protect shinji?

Now the answer I believe

It's just an introduction to the character. heh... rei on a pogo stick... ****... it would have to be eva 00 blue.

why did I write all that ****? cos i thought it would be interesting just how far I could ellaborate on this topic... and I did it with no drugs at all!!! but i recon some of you guys might need some heavy **** to understand it

Cheers.
