WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

So glad I had to work to 3:30 tonight, just so I could come home and see this!

GHIBLI!

*runs around and falls over*

EDIT: 1 thing.
Will there be a box to include all the Ghibli DVDs? I'm thinking no, because Spirited Away came in a regular size and a digipack release...
It'd really really REALLY make my day if there was a box for the special edtion digipacks and a box for the regular editions for all 13 films (10 on the list, spirited away, grave of the fireflies, and princess mononoke [If Disney would just keel over and die])
Highly doubt it though
I can dream...

EDIT2: 2 more things...
1.) Will they be released in chronological order.
2.) What happened to Ocean Waves (AKA I can hear the sea AKA Umi Ga Kikoeru)? Or hasn't it been licensed?

I am guessing that because it never formed part of any licensing deal (disney or otherwise), it won't be included. But the R2 has English subs (^_^)

Ghibli is a big deal whether you like the Ghibli movies or not (and believe me, it's not even a matter of opinion: if you don't like any Ghibli movies there is something wrong with you) because Buena Vista has been holding onto them for a long freakin' time.

Since Laputa is already dubbed, wil lthis dub be the same as the one that was on the o/s video version made back in the early 90s?

OK: I am happy. For now.

I would like to ask if you will make a statement soon about how you will release them.

Totoro has been released with dubtitles in most countries (Japan included).
Kiki has also only been released with dubtitles ( although not the same dub as disney's ).
Laputa has been released with dubtitles in the UK. I don't know about the US releases.

See the pattern?

Will you get LITERAL subtitles for ALL the Ghibli films on the DVDs?
Also, dubtitles for the Hard of Hearing is a good option (although it would be just as good with one set of literal subtitles since most of those users won't hear the sound ).

This is a really important question. I don't buy a DVD for part of it's content. I buy it for all of it's content. If the subtitles are incorrect what the customer gets is half a product.

So, will there be a statement about using ONLY literal subtitles on your releases?

What did you have in mind? That Madman would announce that they are going to bring every anime series ever created to Australian shores in one weeks time?

I, and almost everyone else, definately think this is a big announcement.

The Ghibli announcement is basically what I expected. It's good to see that so many great titles are finally going to get released here, although I already got most of the Ghibli movies I'm interested in.

The theatrical screenings and Ghibli film festival are also great news. Kudos to Madman on obtaining this elusive license.

I'm actually more happy about Slayers Next and Slayers Try being offically announced (even though it was what everyone expected) but Ghibli is good, money wise for Madman as well as fan wise. They must have worked hard to get at them...

I'm insanely glad I stopped to read the newsletter that appeared in my mailbox Very Happy Totoro still stands as my fav anime of all time. But one question/suggestion, I want to buy The Cat Returns, not to buy the movie but to get Ghiblies Episode 2, which gets bundled with the Japanese release. I have already seen it and I am willing to pay as much as it takes to import it because it is incredible stuff. Just wondering whether I should hang on to my money if I can get a cheaper Australian release later on...

Ghiblies win the prize

Oh, thank you, thank you Madman! Very Happy I've been wanting to see more Ghibli films since I saw Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke, especially:

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Laputa: The Castle in the Sky
My Neighbour Totoro, and
Kiki's Delivery Service

Will they be released in order of year they were released, from earliest to lastest?

Yeah, that would be a cool idea. A very cool idea. Another cool idea would be for Madman to stick with Spirited Away LE packaging. ^_^

Oh Lacutus *shakes head* , just one day after your every one on the boards hates me post, you post something that almost everyone's gonna hate. Not that your not entitled to express your opinion, but could you have picked worse timing. Exclamation What the hell were you expecting any way, about the only other option was about 10 classic series all at once.

No. I read somewhere here that the first two will be Kiki and Laputa (which makes sense, since they are already out in R1 and the UK).

Many of the new Disney dubs are still in progress or have yet to be done, and Madman would be foolish to release the films without them (Lensman and Co. notwithstanding). Finished and released: Kiki; Laputa. Finished and not yet released: Porco Rosso; Whisper of the Heart. In progress: Nausicaa. Being done in 2004: Totoro; Only Yesterday; Yamadas.

My wild guess is that we'll see something like this order:

  1. Kiki
  2. Laputa
  3. Porco Rosso
  4. Whisper of the Heart
  5. Nausicaa
  6. Totoro
  7. Only Yesterday
  8. Yamadas
  9. Pom Poko
  10. Cat Returns

For reference, this was the Japanese release order:

  1. Kiki
  2. Yamadas
  3. Totoro
  4. Mononoke (no Madman)
  5. Porco Rosso
  6. Whisper of the Heart
  7. Spirited Away (already out Madman)
  8. Laputa
  9. Pom Poko
  10. Only Yesterday
  11. Cat Returns
  12. I Can Hear The Sea (no Madman)
  13. Nausicaa

Nausicaa is defintely the film everyone should be looking forward to, even if they don't know it. After that, my favorites are Yamadas (nearly as good), and Totoro.

In newsletter, it stated a release timeframe for all ten movies between April 2004 to May 2005. Thats like almost one per month.

As to the subtitles, it will depend on the source material available out there. If there is literal subtitles out there Madman will use them, but if there aren't any, Madman will either have to use the English dub subtitles or pay for someone to translate it (which I found doubtful).

People with more knowledge will happy expand on this Smile

There are subtitles for all films. I do believe there is a script somewhere for Kiki that is literal. Totoro is a MUST. I think they said that the R3's ( HK and Korean ) had the correct subtitles for that. R2 Laputa has literal subtitles. Let's hope the timing doesn't get screwed on the R4 release as it did on the R1 release. Porco Rosso R2 has literal subtitles. Pom Poko R2 has literal subtitles. Whisper of the heart R2 has literal subtitles. Only Yesterday R2 has literal subtitles and it would be nice to have the documentary included with subtitles. The R2 Nausicaa should have literal subtitles since there has been no real dub of it yet. Let's hope Madman have included the commentary track which would have to be subtitled for their release.

Because Disney have the Australian license for Princess Mononoke and it's very unlikely they will release a Region 4 version...

Just import like you did Kiki ;(
