Ranma-esque is one I think we left out. It means cute anime about a young girl. Fruits basket is a prime example.

I am going to have to disagree with the definition on this one.
Ranma 1/2 was not about a young girl, the lead was male.... well most of the time he was male, and the series was not 'cute' as such.

Ranma-esque usually refers to Harem based shows.... 1 male with many females pursuing him, such as Tenchi Muyo or Love Hina.
Fruits Basket does fit into this category as it's a Reverse-Harem (1 female with many males)

Don't take this personally but I absolutely disagree with your whole post.

Ranma 1/2 has a male lead half the time and a female lead half the time thus its called Ranma 1/2. That is how it got its name. As for it been cute well thatís half the joke. A Ranma-esque is a nice story about a little girl. Give me an example of a Harem based show that is a Ranma-esque?

You are free to disagree, as long as you dont mind being wrong.
where did your definition come from? Mine is a somewhat logical look at the term and the series that spawned it.... based partly on other series I have heard referred to as such.

Mr popo wrote:

by your own definition the series the term takes its name from is not about a little girl at least 50% of the time. making it a very poor choice of series to use as that definition.
And from memory (been a long time since i sat and watched Ranma 1/2 so I could be wrong on this point) didn't the female form retain the attitude and desires of the male form?
It was a physical change not a mental one.... literally a man trapped in a womans body.

Mr popo wrote:

explain the joke.

Mr popo wrote:

I already did,
Tenchi Muyo
Love hina
and your example of Fruits Basket (which you got right but for the wrong reason)
Give me an example of how Ranma 1/2 is Ranma-esque in your definition.

The only other examples of a series that I think could be described as "Ranma-esque" would be one that relates to arranged marriages, or is primarily a fighting series.... preferably a combination of the two.

I can't seem to find a good definition of Ranma-esque to that supports your definition or my own definition. Give me till the end of the week and you will see that I'm right.

No, because it is a lot of tripe. If people are saying `Ranma-esque', which I may note I think I have heard all of once or twice before, they would be referring to a harem comedy. For obvious reasons, people normally go with the more direct term `harem comedy'. Fruits Basket is, as Viking stated, a Reverse Harem, and no one (except in Bizaro World) would consider it Ranma-esque.

How do you account for Ranma 1/2? Why is it called that? Where do you get your information from?

It is an anime term so it should be up here. I don't care what anyone thinks it means, it should still be listed.

Likewise, bucko.

Yes, well, if no one knows what it means, or nobody agrees on it, how can you put it up there?

Dude, see a psych. Normal people don't care so much.

If you are seeing a psych, pay attention to what they tell you about normal conversation.

I am just joking around. You are the one who needs to go see a psych. You are too serious and most likely heading towards depression. Just loosen up a little.

You never act like you are joking around. You get quite mad sometimes when arguing (those poor DBZ threads...)
Nargun is heading towards depression? XDD *can't stop laughing* It's funny because its wrong.
Rather, it is you who needs to loosen up here, k?

*still laughing*

What does lolipedo mean? That is an `English' word I do not know Razz

I assume you mean lolita complex/pedophile, therefore the Japanese you are referring to would be lolicon. Given it is not a common anime term and rather a term referring to one's sexual preference (and as such a common hentai word), it probably does not belong on the list Wink

I've never heard it in my whole entire life.

I posit that, if I've never heard it, it's not a common anime term.

I wouldn't put my money on it, but I am almost certain that it does mean that.

It isn't really an anime term, more of a slang word for a paedophile.

Could I perhaps suggest a couple of terms to add?

Harem - An anime plot which centers around several, usually beautiful, girls and a single main male character. There is also reverse harem, which is the same but the genders switched around.

Seinen and Josei - Similar to shonen and shoujo, but targeted at men and women aged in the older-teen to 30s category.

Bishoujo and Bishounen - Anime series which focus on many beautiful, female characters (in the case of bishoujo) or many attractive male characters (in the case of bishounen).

Thanks. So, for example, Gundam Seed Stargazer ONA was released online first, but later on DVD (Japan only), yet it remains an ONA and doesn't become an OVA because that was it's original release format, correct?

Again I apologise for by Noobicity.

where do u get off inserting your Bias opinions into your explanation of anime terms. if u want to be a fan and have your opinion thats fine, go and do it in a fan post. if u are going to do something remotly educational try to leave your personal opinions out of it.

I assume you're referring to the first post. It's written with humour in mind, which is one of the core principles of this forum, and certainly was when the thread was created almost a decade ago... an anime fan who can't laugh at themselves probably takes it a bit too seriously.
