I quite liked V1 and looking forward to V2. Good premise, characters, and setting (You can't go wrong setting it in an all girls school Wink )

Quite strong similarities to Love Hina though. The main female character, Asuna, is very similar to Naru in appearance and personality, and also has a crush on a teacher Takahata (Seta?) as well. Looks like Ken Akamatsu realised he had a winning formula and stuck with it Smile

I'm more or less caught up to the current chapters of the manga and it is a good series.

There is a lot more fighting/action scenes then Love Hina and they are quite well done. The artwork is great and there are many interesting characters is the class. After a few introduction story arcs the story really starts getting really interesting to read.

Even though I am enjoying the series the whole a bunch of 14 and 15 year old girls being so in love with a 10 year old boy still weirds me out sometimes.

Did they keep the colour pages in the first chapter in colour in the english release volumes?

Interesting. Nice packaging idea for the characters - That double page spread in the Manga was a lifesaver.
Wish I could read Japanese so I could understand what it is though. I tried poking around a bit, but I'm easily distracted so gave up Very Happy

I have a soft spot for Horie Yui. Both to look at and to listen to. However, Slykura would gut me if we three were in the room together and I made a move.

FYI, Horie Yui is number 16.

It's ok, but some of the dialogue was changed to "Sex things up a bit. I didn't get why they changed "Aiiya!" to "Time to bend it like Beckham" though.

There are no color pages in the beginning, the other translations had them though (like the Chinese one), and some of the dialogue was changed, but hopefully, Del Ray will try not to "Sex" things up more because it's already got enough fan service Wink

Please tell me Del Ray didn't pull a Tokyopop on Negima and totally ruin it with lots of bad western references and lame jokes.

If its only one bad thing here and there then I can look past it. But if its as bad as Love Hina got mid way through Tokyopops releases then I'm going to have to avoid this as much as possible.

Personbot: To me, they are doing just that. After viewing the original and chinese versions and fan scanlations, I'd have to say they tried to do "something" with it and to me, failed miserably. Hopefully, their translations improve dramatically. They didn't put in any lame jokes though, but it just seemed to me that they had a poor attempt at "rowdyize" and ďJargonisedĒ some of the language to make it become more ďhipĒ.

Basically, itís my take on the matter and I am sure there are others who disagree but itís up to your own tastes actually. Nothing can be exactly translated word for word because itís a different language, and if you did do it word for word it wonít make much sense at all. Iíll admit it, I like perfection; Iím a subbie, and I like everything original. But what I dislike (and what I think most people would dislike) is when excessive crap is included and pointless references are made to make it appeal to a more American audience. Just think about it as quality, not quantity. What Del Ray put in was quantity; more things than needed. If they didnít add more things in, it would be quality, as they would have done it just right without adding too much stuff in.

But Iím not here to sway you away from Del Rayís products, in fact for Tsubasa, their translation seemed quite well done; though I havenít read the original. But you just get that feeling that nothing seemed to be out of place, everything just seemed to fit. You usually wonít get that feeling when your reading Tokyopopís awful translation of Initial D and Love Hina, as well as Del Rayís average to sub-par translation of Negima.

Itís up to you, buy it and see for yourself and decide whether you want to continue. As for me, even though I donít like the translation, itís still Ken Akamatsu so I am willing to buy it just because of that Razz.

When I first started reading it I wasn't that impressed either but I gave it a go and kept reading and now I really enjoy it.

The first 2 volumes are just introducing the characters and are just a bit of pointless fun, but by volume 3 the proper story finally starts to kick in and it just gets much better from there.

Is it possible for madman to release the Chuang Yi version of negima. I just got volume 1 at Supanova yesterday through tamarket.

You've managed to release a few of their translations already.

PLEASE can you add Negima to your growing list of manga releases? Very Happy

The Kyoto arc actually starts in volume 4, chapter 28 and continues until volume 7, chapter 53.

Pity no-one responded to my comment about releasing it in Australia. Sad{|=

You can get an English release of Negima in Australia already.

From what I've been told in this thread Del Ray didn't do the greatest job on it though. I would take a look and judge for myself but the manga is shrink wrapped so I can't check it out without buying it first or by just unwrapping the volumes in the store.

The Del Ray publication isn't that bad, it just feels a little weird when you read it as everyone is speaking in that strange language of "company friendly slang". While that's usually all it takes to ruin the dialogue of a release, Del Ray seem to have miraculously not made the conversions too awkward for the casual reader (which is more than I can say for ADV's first two volumes of AzuDai, or basically anything Viz did before Excel Saga)

Actually, they really didn't do a very good job at all. Even Tokyopop's fist few volumes of Love Hina are good compared to the amount of useless americanisation that the stupid adaptor did in Negima.

When will they ever learn that putting useless pop-culture phrasing and crappy puns don't work?

If somebody just walked into a comic book store and picked it up, just being a casual reader they may not mind if its full of horribly lame american slang.

But for people who read manga frequently and like their manga as close to the original as possible, what Del Ray did is just wrong.

You'd think after the response Del Ray got from the fans after they announced they were going to censor Negima, that they would of learnt that the fans don't like it when American companies change manga so it suits them.

Unfortunately, the people in charge of the adaptation don't always think about the fans (4kids is a big offender in this regard) and instead produce the english adaptation in a manner aimed at a particular target audience which may or may not include the interests of the fans. Which is why I stand by my previous statement in the manner Personbot pointed out so succinctly.

Personally, I don't know how to read Japanese. And the same with many others, so just be glad that there is an english version at all.

FYI the Negima! anime series is supposed to premiere in Japan in Januray 2005. check www.animenewsnetwork.com for details.

I saw the preview video for Negima, introducing the Baka Rangers. The animation looked good, it was pretty funny. As long as it doesn't get screwed up like Love Hina then it should be really good.

Just a FYI to you all, my local Manga Shop is getting Negima Vol 3 in tomorrow, so I'd check your local stores either Tommorow or Friday and they could possibly have the new volume in.

Just a note:

The Singapore English Translation of the Negima Manga is superior to its American counterpart.

For:

1) The translation is more faithful and less "improvised" to make it familiar to western audiences.

2) It does not tone down the original raunchiness of the dialogue, and thus...

3)...is much more funny. Wink

Well considering Del Rey put the "Thousand Master" as the "Southern Master" in Vol 3, I'l think I'll be waiting for the Chuang Yi versions from now on.

One of the rauchiest jokes, which also reflects Asuna's greatest personal anxiety, is completely ommitted in the Del Ray version:

After Negi accidentally blows all of Asuna's clothing off instead of erasing her memory, and then the teacher walking in on her half naked, she was banging on the floor crying:
"Not only did he see me with my bear panties, he now knows I am hairless!!"
Razz

This remains unchanged in the Singapore English Version. Wink

Personally, Nodoka-Chan reminds me of an older (but no less cute) version of Shinobu-Chan from Love Hina. Akamatsu-Sensei himself said that is her design motiff.

For Akamatsu Sensei's character-design commentaries, remove the outer cover-slip of your Chinese/Japanese editions of Negima and he will reveal all on the inner back cover. Wink

And dammit Negi that lucky little twerp. He is getting more in a day than what most married men get in a month. Razz

When I was in Tokyo at the Super Character Festival, there was a big stand for Negima, and a huge queue of otaku waiting to be let loose on the merchandising. I'd never heard of the series before, but I picked up a "Mahora" blazer crest patch for good measure. Very Happy

There were also seiyuu there, but I had no idea who was who, or what they were saying, apart from each of them introducing themselves and ending with the standard "please go for me" phrase. Then they played janken with the crowd and gave away stuff. Very Happy
