I know it's available in the US, it's even available here as an import.
It's supposed to be available as a Madman manga.

umm no, we've never announced azumanga daioh manga as one of our titles.

The first poll was only to see what people potentially wanted, not a be all end all list of what we have rights to.

Its good, but the adaptation performed by ADV ruins a lot of the jokes in the first two volumes.

I haven't read the japanese version, so I'm not sure what has been ruined (besides the whole spanish teacher-english teacher thing), but it must be absolutely awesome because i found the first two volumes hilarious. then again, it wouldn't mean much to me if i read the japanese version, considering i would only recognise the occasional phonetic

My only complaint is that i can never find volume 3 in the shops. vol 4 is always being proudly exhibited, but volume 3 is always on back order, or is 'arriving in 1-2 weeks. i don't get in fast enough, and some other WA person has beaten me to it. YES, I HOPE YOUR HAPPY Evil or Very Mad

I think it's supposed to be the Japanese puns and the Osaka jokes. Basically, things you wouldn't know exist unless told about Razz

It's not just the cultural references that are lost in the English translation. The English translation also changes some of the nuances behind character speech, perhaps to make it more idiot friendly. There are quite a number of implied jokes that have had their dialogue changed to make them more direct, which makes them lose some of their comedic value.

eg.
Tomo: 大人の付き合いはやっぱりエロエロですか?
Are adult relationships really that erotic?(Literal translation, but in that particular context of it being used by a kid, the word "naughty" may be more fitting)

actual English adaptation: Do adult relationships always involve sex?

After that line, Nyamo starts to go on about HOW adult relationships are erotic. We don't get to see her dialogue. We only get to see the looks on the faces of the kids. Now, in the Japanese version, they've left it open to anything at all, but in the English version, they narrow it down to sex because they're afraid you'll miss the point. As you can see, the English version loses a lot because they throw the answer in your face at the start, which ruins the comedic timing.

I think the big problem with translations is that most of the time the translators have no proper writing skills, meaning that they can manage to butcher even the best of scripts.

I didnt even realise that it had been translated into English... but I bought the first volume in Japanese a while ago (Blessed be Kinokuniya).

Anyway, the lack of furigana makes it difficult to read... - but I can manage some of it. And its Azumanga... so its amusing anyway.

"Doing a bit of market research which i'm sure people here would be happy about.

Madman Entertainment will be launching their Manga Distribution arm soon, possibly around December. Now what they want to know is a few things, what titles you want for launch, how much for it and also where you'd like to buy them.

Angelic Layer
Chobits
Cowboy Bebop
Escaflowne
FLCL
Initial D
Love Hina
Sailor Moon
.hack//The Legend of the Twilight Bracelet
Neon Genesis Evangelion
No Need for Tenchi
Slam Dunk
X
Full Metal Panic
Azumanga Daioh

These are the titles that they have acquired and pricing is set at $14.95 per graphic novel, now do you think this is good value?"

NB "have acquired". Typo?
