I went to Animania this year and I thought that was a blast. But considering that next year, Anianima is on the 8/9th of October 2005 and Supanova(Sydney) has changed its date to 15/16th of October 2005 I dont know which one to go to and I know that I wont have enough money or be allowed to go to both. I didnt get to go to Supanova this year so tell me what you thought of both or either one and which one you might be going to next year.

Definately Supanova.

While I enjoyed Animania (as usual, for the socialising and cosplay more than anything else), Supanova is... bigger & better I suppose. I enjoyed the non-anime aspects of it as well so that probably made it better. That and Tamarket. Razz

i looked into the scedule for this year suponova but i cant help but not believe thats its better than animania. animania had a huge amount and a wide variety of screenings and all sorts of anime-mecha, yaoi and the like, but when i looked into supanova it kinda seems that the only anime that their into is dragonball-there was more but dragonball just happens to be metioned a lot more than most. supanova might have more sponsors or vendors and are a bit more organised but that doesnt compare to the fact that animania is a lot more "anime" for anime fans

If you're going for anime, goto Animania.

Supanove is a 'pop culture' convention. Yes madman will play a role, but the main focus will not be on Anime.

I loved Supanova over all but i prefer animania for the the fact that its purely anime but Supanova WINS FOR ALUCARD AND TAMARKET.

www.tamarket.com.au

They're only the best online store in Australia Razz people adore them coming to conventions because they sell things nobody else does, like plushies, gashapons, pencil boards, artbooks... things that are common in Japan but extremely rare here.

I missed Supanova, so I can't really compare, but I'll probably be at both, but not have tons of $$$ to buy stuff with. Damn, having them that close together is a bad idea. I can see both of them having a low attendance because people will be saving their $$$ to only go to one.

But hey, that's a lot of excuses to run around in costume for one month! Razz

We at Supanova try to screen a wide variety of programming. Yes the main focus was on Dragon Ball, due in part to the many guests we have from the show as well as what the kids like. I plan on showing a wider variety of anime next year with Dragon Ball now coming to an end almost, programming the theatre is more flexible Very Happy

Stay tuned as we've got an excellent amount of guests for both Brisbane and Sydney next year that are yet to be revealed Smile

The two things I liked more about Supanova than Animania are guests and lighting. It was also really awesome to see a lot more vendors but from a Cosplayer's POV, Supanova was better because there was more natural lighting and it wasn't as dark. A much better situation for taking pictures. Animania was in a pretty hall (if you ignored the construction) and was all moody etc but it was too dark for anything other than the screenings. And it was hard to find things because its built like a hamster home....lots of tunnels. Having the guests was also a good thing because not only does it mean more people are likely to come but there are very few chances here for people to see their fave actors, artists and voice artists. If Supanova screened more anime and different types, then there would be no comparison. I just really wish they hadn't changed the date...its not fair to either convention or the fans to have them both so close together. Has anyone mentioned this to the organizers? Do they ever read these forums? Sure, it gives me and other cosplayers more time to get our costumes ready (yay, lol) and a chance to spend a month in costume in a place that doesn't celebrate Halloween, but its not a good practise at all.

I'm going to try and go to both but one may lose out. We'll see.

Cheers! Very Happy

I think I'll try for both, but I'm going to have to make sure they have things to do that don't involve spending money

hmmmm............i might go to both now.....really depends if its during-i know there both on weekends-school holidays or not or if ive saved up enough money to go. they should really try to seperate the dates further apart if its possible because the timing is really bad for fans.

Or you could save up those monies and go to a different con altogether...

After going to both this year, I would say that Supanova has my vote. There just seemed like so much more to do and look at in my opinion.

I donno why but Animania seemed so... dead.

That's not really an option for interstate visitors though, I know I'm not going to take a week+ off from work, and I doubt all the schoolgoers could either...

Well, even though I couldn't spend much time there, I enjoyed Supanova more, simply because it's bigger, more fun and there's more to buy. Animania is a little more intimate...ehh, now I don't know! They both appeal to me in different ways! Sorry! But I really do think you get more for your monet at Supanova.

Casts preferance to Animania... I bought everything I wanted and they had these massive screening rooms and stuff showing things I really wanted to watch.

Supanova was amusing tho, and much brighter... but yah... Animania was better (opinion may have changed were I not rather unwell during Supanova... But I doubt it)

Oh, Except Animania had no Shingetsutan Tsukihime figures... and for that I condem it.

I found Animania good for the screenings and games (Naruto and DDR) and Supanova was better with cosplay and stores so it will depend who is offering what and what has been improved before i choose which one i go to. by the way why is the dates so close together? I liked having Supanova and Animania at opposite ends of the year.

It's been announced by the organisers that Supanova can't get a venue earlier in the year 2005, and Animania doesn't want to break the cycle of doing it in October each year (plus Town Hall had to be booked pretty far in advance).

DECLARATION OF INTEREST: Nargun is Louis Patterson, Manifest AMV and Panels coordinator; these comments should be read with that in mind.

If you're short of cash or time, it's sort of hard to recommend going interstate for an anime con. There are local anime cons in WA, SA, Vic,and the ACT; if you *do* live in those states, you should go to Wai-con, AVCon, Manifest, or anime.au, respectively. If you live in Qld, NT, or Tas, you shouldn't be focussing on "what's on in sydney", but weighing the sydney options against those availible in the rest of the country.

Ive already expressed my opinion here http://www.manifest.org.au/forums/viewtopic.php?p=21998#21998

all 1400 words of it..... not all relavant to this. 8 )

this sort of topic has sprouted everywhere since Animania finished. half my rant is just about some "oddities" that happened at animania such as *cough attendance numbers cough*, but I address other peoples ideas of supanova and Animania going toe to toe.

read if you so desire. im interested in hearing others feelings on this subject and cons in general!

A bit OT, but you asked a question there that I'm not going to bother signing up for just to answer:

Yep, also known on several forums (including this one) as "Rozen".

And a long long long time ago, his account name here was Vigil.

Dave also MC'ed the recent 'A Night In Fantasia' concerts.

Wow. Vigil on the madboards. That takes me back some. I forgot I even had that account anymore.

Heya Shinannth. Smile

Good rant Drew but you're actually wrong where you say Supanova is an older con than Animania. I was talking to Sly about this tonight and we both put 2002 as the starting date for Supanova, the same year that me, Mike, Louis and all were running the inaugaraul Animania. Before that there was an earlier incarnation of 'Comicfest' but that was a november event, and a different deal.

Otherwise though, good points. The current situation with Animania and Supanova being on in the same month seems ludicrous to me and completely untenable. I'm sure some room will be made - the vendors won't be able to commit to both, the volunteers will be exhausted and the event staff will be to put upon with uni stuff to manage two cons in two weeks. In short, something has to give.

I'm sure we all want the best for both events, and hopefully some resolution will arise. Animania in the years that I worked on it was a great con to work on, and 'Guu' (whoever he is) is right when he says that the team are very much fans as well as entrepeneurs. Hopefully the 'fan' side will be what we come away with in 2005.

slight correction Smile comicfest started back in 2000. Anime @comicfest started in 2001's first event at the Horden Pavillion, January 2001 I believe. There was also another one at the centre point tower around September 2001.

comicfest! evolved to Supanova in April 2002 Smile
comicfest! ran for one more show at Bankstown in Nov 2002 and was then laid to rest as we decided to move our second show to Brisbane with flying sucess.

all cool Very Happy

i went to the comic fest in sept 2001.......i cant help but say it...it really sucked. I kinda stopped going to conventions after that. Animania was the first "actually convention" i really went to(now im beginning to like conventions). While on the subject.....why do you go to supanova or animania anyway? are you there to buy stuff or are you there for screenings and cosplay etc....???

Socialising. It's an excuse for interstate friends to get together. Pretty much that, really. Cosplay and stuff is a bit of fun on the side imo Razz

well i did say I'd take a stab at Supanovas History. All i kinda knew was it had developed from comicfest and kinda took over after that. As with my major point I see both events are in different markets and the competition really isnt an issue. The issue is really only for those people who would normally go to both events.

I went to Supanova this year in sydney for the first time. I went on a last minute whim, to help out as a volunteer, as my friend zadie was organiseing the volunteers for the event. i decided too because i was interested in what a supanova scale event was like and that zadie could probably use an extra volunteer with several years of convention running experience.

I spent most of my time helping Sly run the screenings so he could be elsewhere instead of having to change anime every 40mins or so. other then that i was filling in holes left by volunteers that never showed or lending a hand. Which i am always quite happy to do. This is what voluntering and running a con is all about - the scrafice and goodwill. When I did rotate a shift with someone I took the time to see all the vendors, buy something or take in ideas. On that last note I really liked dave's sunday cosplay work. I had meant to try and track you down for AVCon but I got bogged down and other things got decided by others. I just hoped my volunteer effort was appreciated and helped out. I would have been volunteering at the Brisbane Supanova, but alas I was in Tokyo for the Tokyo Game show. Perhaps if i am needed and my scehdule allows i shall volunteer again for Birsbane in April.

If it's in Sydney... I go to the cons because I've been going to every single one of them (Comicfest, Supanova, Animania) since September (?) 2001. And helping out at all of them except for Supanova earlier this year when I was manning my anime club table. I don't actually think about why I go because... I just do. I cosplay sometimes, but I don't really buy stuff; only started buying art from artists' alley this year.

But I go to Manifest and anime.au (and want to go to AVCon, Wai-con, Supanova Brisbane) because it's an excuse to go for an interstate trip and meet up with friends.

In the future, however, I'll probably concentrate less on volunteering or cosplaying and more on having a table, both for promoting my club and for selling my artstuffs.

And yeah. I used to meet a lot of new people at cons. Not anymore now because I spend all my time catching up with old friends whom I don't normally get to see in everyday life.

... another incentive to go to cons is to see my bf host cosplay and debate and stuff. XD
