This thread can be deleted or closed or whatever when a shopping guide emerges, but I figured, heres a very poor, basic attempt for a Melbourne guide.

Or it can become the shopping thread! Yay! - Ed.

For those of you not blessed with living in Melbourne, post stores from your city here. Please mention whether or not they sell mixed bootleg/legit stuff. Pure bootleg stores should not be listed, however. I will periodically update this post with stores from each city as we get them. --SN.

Melbourne.

Initial D - Shop 2, 222 Russel St.
Sells a mixture of bootleg and legit stuff. Almost all of their JPop is legit. Has a good range, and good prices (they sell "international" versions, which are far cheaper than the Japanese versions). They stock Ayumi Hamsaki, BoA and many others.

Minotaur - 121 Elizabeth St.
Yes, Minotaur sell anime OSTs. And they've had a few copies of Fiction by Yuji Kajuira (and the Onimusha 2 OST at one stage). But they're upwards of $35, so be warned. Almost all of their CDs are US releases of anime OSTs.

HMV - The mall
HMV do stock the anime OSTs, but you have to special order J-pop/rock/anything else. They were going to order me a couple of Gackt for $30 a piece, which seemed good value, but I didn't want to wait.

Comics World - Level 1/ 234 Swanston Pde (03) 9663 0779
Comics World is a manga rental place frequented by Asian students. They have a small stock of new Cantopop, J-Pop, K-Pop and import games. Prices are the best in Melbourne. In the case of J-Pop, you can choose between Japanese import, and legitimate Taiwanese pressing. The staff are super friendly, happy to order anything for you - shipments are weekly.

Alternate Worlds -76 Chapel St, Windsor
Not to good a range, apparently, and sort of expensive, but worth checking out.

Honya - Port Philip Arcade (shop no?)
Honya sells a whole bunch of stuff relating to Japan in general. This does include anime material, Japanese books, prints, art, laserdiscs and other things. They also sell Japanese-released CDs, including a fair amount of JPop and J-Rock. Some of their stuff is secondhand, so you can occasionally find a decent bargain.

Sydney

Golden Dragon arcade - Inbetween George st and Market city
For complete details, read Mr. Waffles post. But, it's three stores in one, all of which have different stock and all of which are worth visitng. Even if the upstairs one is the best.

Queensland

A-Zone -Shop 3b, Yellow Golden Arcade, 179 Wickham Street, Fortitude Valley, QLD 4006 (07) 3216 1335
Be careful with this place. they have some legit US versions--but a fair few bootlegs as well, I've been told.

If anyone wants to add anything, please do, just to make this eem better. And if anyone knows of a place I can purchase hide or Gackt CDs (or any of the other artists from 'Our favorite anime music/J-pop' thread, i.e Mayaa Sakamoto) that would be much appreciated.

If you can, list which artist they sell.

Yeah. Well. Turns out I'm back already.

Hmm, you can order JPop from HMV? I didn't know that. Do they import them for you? That's cool. I might go make use of them. Where do I ask, in the world music section?

In Initial D, the JPop CD's are legitimate. Some of the others are bootlegs. The JPop DVD's are also legitimate.

You just need to ask at the regular counter, just near the stairs/escalator. Right across from the regular pop-music.

EDIT: Address as requested - 76 Chapel St, Windsor (Melbourne)

Ooh I forgot I was supposed to do this XD

The Artbox store in one of the arcades in Melbourne Chinatown sells kpop cds. (I figure I might as well include k and cpop since people who listen to jpop are willing to try other languages Razz)

Sydney

Golden Dragon arcade- inbetween George st and Market city

This mini-arcade has several shops of interest... a Hobbyworld shop (with models and such), and a downstairs shop (let's call it the racist shop) and the upstairs shop (let's call it the awesome shop). The racist shop has bootleg anime and hk movies, but legit cpop, kpop and jpop. They were totally racist at me when I bought an Ayumi poster there once (the joys of having friends who know Cantonese I guess). The girl who hands out flyers out front always ignores aussies and only gives them to asians, because obviously if I've just walked out of your store I'm not interested in asian music at all Rolling Eyes

The awesome shop is up the escalator, and it has pretty much the same stuff, but has nicer staff and a discount card (Along the lines of buy 3 jpop cds and get $5 off a 4th? Something like that...). Both shops have different stock so it's worth checking them out (though I boycott the racists, now Razz).

There are three kpop shops I know of, one in Strathfield shopping centre (near the exit to the train station), one in Chatswood (I don't recall the directions, sorry XD somewhere on the outside of the shopping arcade that isn't the main one o_O;; ), and another in the suburb to the west of Chatswood. Haven't been there, just been told it's a Korean bookstore that stock cds ^^; I can dig up the address if anyone wants.

Mr Waffle, do you want me to edit the Sydney ones into my post as well?

gouki, i think it'd be good if all new additions were added to your post, categorised by city. That way, everyone can just read thru the top post rather than search through a thread which will become several pages long quite quickly.

I've added the address to Alternate Worlds in my post, so you can add the details to yours too Smile

That was the intention. Sorry I didn't make it clear initially.

I've added Honya to the original post. If someone knows the shop number, please let me know so that Gouki or I can edit it in.

MrWaffle: can you break your post up into each store and a quick description of each (and, preferably, their proper names), so Gouki or I can just copy/paste it into the original post?

Just to clarify, when you say "HMV - The Mall" you mean bourke street mall, right?

Also, is that Target Anime Station still going? Did they stock CDs?

There is only one HMV in the city, so I'd assume its the Bourke Street Mall.

The anime station is still going, but they don't stock OST's or JMusic.

Ooops, gomen (_ _)

In that case, the only dedicated places you can get Anime OSTs from in Brisbane is at Supanova once a year when Tamarket are present, or at A-Zone in Fortitude Valley, but A-Zone sell mostly bootleg junk, though I did pick up an authentic Chrno Crusade soundtrack from them before. Their OSTs are a mixture of bootleg and proper copies - have to sort through them to find what you're after.

Have you got the actual address? I'll add it to the list, and if SN wants to remove it he can. But if it has legit stuff then I don't see why not.

I've seen the US import versions of the Tsukihime and Chrno Crusade soundtracks there, but a lot of the J-Pop stuff is bootleg sadly Sad

Does anyone know if Kinokuniya imports by request? I'm looking to purchase Final Fantasy sheet music, so is it likely they would order it in for me, considering it's technically a book? Otherwise, it looks like I'll have to turn to gamemusic.com.

I have asked in HMV if they will order in J-Pop CD's for me and they said they can't do it. They can't find the stuff I want. I've also asked if JB HI-FI and they also said they can't order the stuff in.

It's no fair. Confused

At first I asked if they had anything by Kotoko, but they didn't so the next time I went back I asked if they had anything by Ayumi Hamasaki.

I thought they were pretty famous so they would most likely have at least an album by one of the artists, but I was quite surprised that the couldn't get anything by them.

Oh well Sad

Is there any music shop in sydney that sells real Cowboy Bebop OST's.....not cheap rip offs? Does the Upstairs shop sell legit copies of Cowboy bebop?

thanks in advance

I doubt it, they mainly stock new release cds. You're probably better off checking out one of the online aussie websites, in the general anime shopping thread.

hmm... I recently orderd and recieved 2 TM revolution CD's and Nami Tamaki's CD from JBHIFI online... www.JBHIFIonline.com.au
I don't see why the normal stores wouldn't be able to get JPOP CD's in Surprised

I tried ordering Deep River/Colours by Utada Hikaru from JB last year sometime and they also said they could get in First Love. I waited months and months and then they finally rang me and said they couldn't get it in anymore.

I did order Exodus from there though but it's an American release.

The J-Pop CD's on the JB website are SO expensive though.

For the last couple of months, Shin Tokyo have been stocking J-Pop/J-Rock CD's and DVD's.

www.shintokyo.com.au

They have a nice selection but they're constantly getting new titles in. If you search on the front page, it'll come up with some results. They're not all listed yet as the site is being update (still).

Shin Tokyo is only located in Adelaide but you can also order online. I've seen some stuff in the store that's not available on the website yet but they will be eventually.

There's lots of albums by Gackt, Hamasaki Ayumi, X Japan, GLAY, L'Arc~en~Ciel, Dir en Grey, etc. plus live DVD's and PV collections.

Is there any music shop in sydney that sells real Cowboy Bebop OST's.....not cheap rip offs? Does the Upstairs shop sell legit copies of Cowboy bebop?

thanks in advance

If you can buy online, Shin Tokyo have just about every Bebop CD you can think of. They're all legit too. I've seen them in the store. Just search on their site and you'll find them.

They're not legit. Which is why they're selling so cheaply. They're bootlegs. I mean, if you were told they were legit and bought some because of that, you've been duped.

Otherwise, tell me which company makes them? It'll say somehwere on them the company that distributes and where they were made.
