I can post up some DoDonPachi scores, if you'd like. I'm not that great though, I can only get about 15 million or so.

How many people have PS2 DoDonPachi or ESPGaluda?

How about a GigaWing 2 contest? Level 1, score attack, anyone who gets less than ten quadrillion points is disqualified for being crap.

If nothing else, I guess we can all participate in an Imperishable Night contest (1.5 billion normal clear, thank you very much.)

My first crack at the game...

StorminNorman - 1941970 - Area 2

The second boss is extremely cheap.

EDIT:

StorminNorman - 2307335 - Area 2

I finished the second level and the game ended. WTF? Is this a demo?

I think I'll stick to imperishable night. The second boss seems impossible to beat without dying.

Image fixed. I chose this game 'coz its freeware and only 1.4MB so everyone can get to play it easily. Also it doesn't have any options / cheats or anything that can be used to rig the game.

MODS I GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO EDIT THE FIRST POST TO CHANGE THE TOP TEN

I just noticed that.
I finished area 2 but i still only ended up with 1 million points, how did you get more?

If anyone wants to suggest a new game, knock yourselves out. (Please make sure it's freeware.)

It's all about the multipliers.

The key is to use your secondary fire as often as possible. It's the key to big scoring.

I don't like the lack of bullet-break when using the secondary fire, though.

StorminNorman - 2687395 - Clear(?)

Definitely only two stages. I'm going to try and beat both stages without dying to see if there's something else beyond that. I can get to the second boss without dying.

I'm pretty sure scores of 3 million shouldn't be too difficult. If I can get 2.6 million and still see where I'm missing some secondary-fire opportunities, it mustn't be too hard.

The game's actually not that great— has some balance issues and a nasty "dead spot" in level two where nothing happens for a time. On the other hand, it seems to suit this little challenge of ours quite well. It's not unplayable, for sure.

On the other hand, I find it enjoyable enough. As a score challenge, it seems perfect, as it has multipliers and scoring opportunities galore.

Maybe, though, we should graduate to something like Torus Trooper or Cho-Ren-Sha 68k, though.

I will have a go at these games tomorrow afternoon. Uni prevents me from playing games during the week. I haven't played a SHMUP in a while, so it'll take me a while to get a decent score. Razz

2407335 on second try.

I think I could probably get around 3 million if I played it some more, but the game is pretty lame, so I'm gonna delete it now. Maybe I'll try that other one out...

I've updated the high-score charts. I'm unlikely to keep playing the first game, so I'll only focus on Cho Ren Sha 68k scores now.

Cho-Ren-Sha:

StorminNorman - 1148776 - Stage 3

Ever have one of those games where you fall into the zone and it all goes right?

Yeah. Somehow got to the third boss like that. Just... wow.

Cho-Ren-Sha is really, really simple. There's no scoring strategy other than "shoot everything as quickly as possible".

The powerups are great, too. I suggest always collecting the shield powerup (that's the purple one) if you don't have it, then the shot powerup (more powerful shot really does make things easier) then bombs when you can.

Also, don't be deceived by the first level. It's really, really easy, and gives away little of the challenge that lies beyond it.

I'll update the table, now.

Wait until you see stage 4. Shocked

Also, the game shows a replay of your last game as the demo mode, which is kind of nifty.

Hey i figured something really cool out!
In Cho Ren Sha 68k, during the Stage 1 boss fight, you can get the twin bosses to kill each other!
The big charge up shot that they do (the one that shoots one huge glowing ball at you) if you get in between them as they fire their balls, their balls hit each other instantly killing them!

I can never seem to get them to both hit each other when I do that, though.

It seems to work better if you let them do it the second time they fire the charge shots.

BGSarevok - 441,904. Stage 2. Every time I get a shield and the super awesome rapid firing powerup, I make a dumb mistake. That, and those gagagoogoo bosses on Stage 1 whipped out some weird **** shot which just annihilated me. Neutral

I'll keep playing.

I've been using a PS2 pad through a PS2->USB adapter. Works wonders.

3,142,309 Stage 2-0 (you start second loop after Stage 6)

I think I prefer playing with keyboard over a gamepad (maybe I'm just used to FPS games?)

After everyone's is finished playing this game, do you guys want to have a competition with N? It's a lot more versatile than shmups (and probably easier for new people), and is available for all three platforms (PC, Mac, Linux).

It based on the time it takes to complete levels. You start with a certain amount of time (represented by the blue bar at the top of the screen) that counts down until you reach the exit of the level. The gold bars each add 2 seconds to your time, but they are not required for you to finish the level. This means you have to weigh up whether or not it is worth your time to seek out the gold bars, or just reach the exit as quick as possible.

StorminNorman - 1884623 - Stage 1-5

I can do the first two levels without dying now, although I still occasionally get hit (shield powerups are for the win!) then. I've got a replay that shows if you can max out your items (bombs, power, shield) by the end of level 2, then you'll get a 1up.

I can get a 1up on level 3 or 4 or so.

Also, does anyone else know that, if you sit in the middle of the powerup triangle, you can collect all three? It's really tricky to do, and I can't do it consistently, but it is possible, and helps in the score later on, as powerups over your maximum can increase in value up to 25600 points.

If nothing else, I guess we can all participate in an Imperishable Night contest (1.5 billion normal clear, thank you very much.)

ive got dodonpachi DAI-OU-JOU if ya wanna post up your scores.
im fairly bad at it though

i also have ikaruga on DC

68k score 529,367 1-2

I think we'll stick to Cho Ren Sha for now.

I was thinking of making this open-ended, really. I'd like to see us all improve our skills... there's some good scores there (Remxi must be a shmupping god), and a lot of room for improvement.

I'd love to see a table full of 1 million+ scores.

Remxi: maybe N should have its own thread, as it's not exactly a shmup, is it?

Or I could retitle this thread or something.

Glad i can help Smile
Went home, plugged in the joystick, and got 1,070,301. Stage 1-3.

Also, could not help but realise some of the sound effects are pulled straight from my fav shmup ever ... ZED BLADE / OPERATION RAGNAROCK. That shmup has the best sound track ever that really gets you hyped up for the game.

3,747,892 - Stage 2-0 (actually survived this level until the boss this time XD).

I managed to make it all the way until the second form of the Stage 6 boss before dying \o/ . Unfortunately, due to the power up system, dying anywhere in Stage 6 pretty much prevents you from ever having a chance in 2-0. If I could survive Stage 6 without dying, I reckon I could make pretty good progress on the 2-X stages...

Also, whoever said the music was good is right, it's a great addition to the whole experience.

The sound in Cho-Ren-Sha doesn't work for me. As soon as it plays a sound effect it just repeats that over and over, then the sound dies. So no sound for me Razz

Gonna have another go, and edit this post if I get a better score. I usually do really well, but make a dumb mistake and then screw up everything else. Razz

Update: BGSarevok - 569,478 - Stage 1-2. That boss **** me up something shocking. I managed to get one of the first stage bosses to kill the other one. That's fun. Razz
