I found myself a little bored, so I decided to put together some statistics on the October requests. I was half tempted to include a statistic of people who requested titles already licensed or available in the catalogue, but I decided they would probably be embarrased enough already Wink

The most-requested titles (not in the latter three categories) are:
1) Ah! My Goddess!
2) You're Under Arrest
3) Invader Zim / Mai-Hime / Slayers (tied)
6) Gatchaman / Genshiken / Naruto (tied)
9) Gunbuster / Hunter x Hunter / Revolutionary Girl Utena (tied)

Additional statistics:
21 people want titles not yet licensed in English.
6 people want Siren-licensed titles to be passed to Madman
5 people want titles not available in Japan!

I guess this tells us something about what the Madboarders want: Fujishima Kosuke, comedy, and shoujo-ai!

I will likely expand on this later to look at the anime demographics and/or genres the Madboarders want to see too: that could prove VERY interesting! I am willing to bet it ends up greatly Shounen, with a close run between Action and Comedy for the genres Smile

EDIT:
Here are the basic statistics on the demographic of Madboard requests.
65.2% were shounen: Bleach was the most popular request.
16.1% were seinen: Ah! My Goddess! was the most popular request.
13.4% were shoujo: Revolutionary Girl Utena was the most popular request.
2.3% were kodomo.
0.5% were josei.
0.5% were mina.

A further 2.0% could not be identified, because I had absolutely no idea what the request is for! Sure, I had to look up half of them to find out what they were (the English titles are sometimes very wierd), but there were a few I could not find at all.

This comes close to what I expected, though I expected seinen closer to 20%, and shoujo closer to 10%.

One of the least surprising things I've ever read on the Madboards. Smile

i'm not at all suprised at the titles not in licensed in english (or an english speaking country for that matter, since some titles do get licensed in japanese only). Seems half the time all i see on those suggestion lists are stuff recently fansubbed or not licensed in the US.

Anime News Network wrote:
(n.) youth; young man.

Relatively uncommon in the west due to the emphasis on the male teen market, "seinen" is a demographic indicator for anime and manga aimed at a young adult male (college-aged) audience. As such, this kind of anime tends to be much more sophisticated than shounen anime. There are many of the same basic themes/subgenres as shounen but they are more psychological, satirical, violent, sexual, etc. In other words they are intended for a more mature audience.

There is a stronger focus on plot and consequently less focus on action. Characters and their interactions are also often more developped than in shounen anime. Because of this, seinen material is frequently misidentified as shoujo because it isn't very well known outside of Japan and because fans correctly recognize the character development, relationships and romance typical of shoujo. However, seinen anime usually deals with these subjects with a greater realism. Where shoujo will have an idealized love story, seinen will have more grays and uncertainties dealing with the practical give-and-take realities of a relationship.

Overall, seinen anime tends to be more strongly rooted in reality, with many incidental details added to heighten the sense of realism and even fantasy elements being subject to a strong "realistic" logic. Of course, it should be noted that those stylistic guidelines are a generalization of the genre and even an anime that has none of those characteristics can be classified as seinen if that was indeed the target audience. In fact, hentai (not including yaoi) is mostly targeted at the seinen demographic.

It should be noted that many of the works of anime most acclaimed for their depth and maturity (such as Patlabor, Maison Ikkoku and Ghost in the Shell) hail from the seinen genre.
