The running gag on the spine of each volume is the spirit of whoever dies in that particular volume getting one last word in.

This will be your only spoiler warning! BEWARE! No spoiler tags ahead!

Cornello dies in Vol. 1 so his spirit is shown flying away as an angel (yeah, an angel, go figure).

In Vol. 2 poor little Nina and Alexander die, so they are shown as angels while Tucker burns in hell.

The Vol. 3 spine shows a random military casualty pleased to have a panel of his own instead of living and dying as just a background character.

In Vol. 4 we lose everybody's favourite military man, Maes Hughes as well as The Slicer brothers. The spine shows Hughes spirit offering to show the Slicer (still in armoured form) pictures of his little girl. The Slicer is not impressed.

Vol. 5 features the story of how Ed and Al lose their mother so the spine features Trisha lovingly commenting on how her boys are such a handfull. Also there's a kitty. I don't remember when or how a cat dies in Vol. 5.

This brings us to Vol. 6 in which no actual character die but the brothers do eat a rabbit and a fish on Yock island so their spirits are shown rising to heaven. A fox takes the first rabbit the Elrics catch before they can kill it so that explains the "The fox got to me." line.
Finally, the creature Ed and Al transmute in place of their mother is shown growling and what have you as it rises to heaven.

So there you have it. Yeah, it's kind of a morbid joke to put on the spine of each book, but it's well worth a giggle or two.[/spoiler]

That little girls cat dies and she brings it to Izumi and asks Izumi to "fix" it...

Ah crud. Someone beat me to it. <_<

Anyways, for a slight preview,

Book 7 has a bunch of unidentified humans doing the angel. Mentions that the deaths are "Way too many to count.".

Book 8 has Roa, Martel, Dorchette and Greed..

Book 9 has a winged Lieutenant Ross looking VERY bewildered. Of course, the scanlation, wiki, original and chinese translation readers will already know this one's an intentional red herring by the author.

If you think that's very intriguing, see Book 10, where Mustang uses his Fire-based Alchemy in ways you'd never thought were possible.

(Unfortunately, I didn't have time to catch a glimpse of the spine before I had to return it. Pity. But I'll have it again soon enough...)

No idea, I do have the Madman release, maybe its just because I pre-ordered like two months ago.

I grabbed my copy from EB yesterday, so delayed or not it's out now.

I'm really excited by how different the manga is getting in comparison to the anime. I've made a deliberate effort not to read ahead, so every new issue from Madman is a treat!

Definately get FMA over Chrno, I've read both and FMA is much better. I can't wait to see where its going next, I might even have to eat on the cheap for a while to make sure I get it.

Not too much happens in vol6 anyways - most was in the anime

It was just mainly the conclusion to Yock Island, then it showed what REALLY happened when they tried to bring their mother back to life and Greed appears at the end

I'm thinking of buying my manga direct from MM. The only thing that stopping me is the fact that there is so much OTHER stuff I want to buy!! One of these days though...I probably will. Talk about being caught between the Pinnacle of Panic and the Abyss of Doom...

o.O Do you come in English or just bad english?

I agree though, in the manga Bradley is nowhere near as likeable as anime Bradley.

Which considering the history you hear about from his family in the extra at the end of Vol. 7 (with Armstrong's sister) thats quite a shame for him.

Ok, my sister bought me an FMA artbook (from Japan, in Kinokuniya) and one of the pictures greatly intrigues me...
Ed and Al are in battle stances and Envy is inbetween them. The thing is, Envy's right hand appears to be doing what Greed does, becoming the ultimate shield. Also, Envy's left eye is glowing. Could this somehow mean Envy is gathering the powers of dead Homonculus? (I'm not too sure on this, its just an idea...anyone know about it?

*Chapter 51 spoiler warning*

It's been a while since I've seen that pic, but I think Envy's actually turning into his true form, which in the manga is a big ugly monster.

Man...the plot really is interesting!
Anyways the artbook also has pictures of some of the volume covers.
The best two are for vols 11 and 12!! expecially 12!
