Gasaraki. That's about as close as I could think of. Chris Patton still does the lead role.

That's pretty much like saying Burn Up W and Ghost in the Shell are the same because they star girls with guns.

Full Metal Panic is brilliant because it manages to combine mecha with high-school comedy romance so successfully. As a result, there's not really anything similiar. Yes, Gasarki does feature mecha and an ADV dub, so Chris Patton and all the others are there. RahXephon is the same.

They really lack the funny aspect that made FMP so endearing though. You could try the sequal series, Fumoffu to FMP!, as apparently it's pretty good but focuses more on the romantic-comedy side of the show.

Martian Successor Nadesico is definitely the closest thing to FMP you'll get.

yeah i'll second martian succesor nadesico for the "similar to FMP" stakes... it gets a vote since it's a mecha action show with a heavy comedic edge to it, tho it's still pretty different to FMP (for one, you DON'T get to see up the female leads skirt every 5 seconds, take that as an advantage or a disadvantage)

The absolute closest you can get is Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid; after that, I will also throw in another vote for Nadesico. VanDread is another mecha/comedy series, but that is the only way you could say it is 'similar' to Full Metal Panic!.

There is one huge difference between FMP and Nadesico, though.

Nadesico is actually funny.

I wouldn't say FMP is not funny, it just seems to swing between serious, mecha action episodes, and light-hearted high-school episodes.

Nadesico on the other hand, can be hilarious and tragic in the same episode. The animation might not be as beautiful as FMP's but it is funnier and better written.

I much prefer Fumoffu to the original. It's the fluffy, light-hearted Chidori fan-service series that FMP should have been from day one.

On the other hand, there wasn't enough Miharu fanservice in Gasaraki, either...

fmp! wasnt meant to be a comedy its was a mecha show that had some funny moments, fummofu is the comedy side hence funny as hell

and FMP! kicks ass,of course...

WTF??? fumoffu has more chidori fan service than the original series??? surely you jest! Razz (ok, there is that ONE hotspring episode, but you dont REALLY see anything... Wink )

i gave up on the first series after the relentless up-skirt shots on chidori every 3 minutes... it is a prime example when fan service detracts from the story... when your discussing plans for escape, and theres badies all round... the last thing the story needs, at that point, is an off angle shot of the female lead, so we can see up her skirt... i mean c'mon we've seen her bum at least 18 times already...

Hold on there archangel... "relentless up-skirt shots"? I remember FMP! having very few panty shots. Off hand, I can only recall four of them, all in the one episode. Hardly the rapid-fire fanservice you describe. It may very well be that I'm desensitised to panty shots after watching Ikki Tousen though...

er i'm not sure if any of the following counts as spoilers, so i'l just tag the whole lot... it's all about FMP and why i rekon it's inferior... Razz

well it has been a while since i had seen FMP... but i remember, on vol 1 theres a bunch of scenes where you either see up koname's skirt, or you see her at some other obscure angle... it just never suited the moment... like, she's standing there, with a summer breeze and sakura pettles blowing in the wind... and on what angle do we see her... the ground up... i mean come on, is it really nessesary...

then... i can remember destictly, when koname was kidnapped and stuff, after they get away and they're talking about getting away, and what do you see, the angle of the 3 of them laying low, from the back... just so we can see koname's nickers under her short hospital gown they got her in... that was what anoyed me the most, that part in particular, i mean, it's a serious life or death moment, and they ruined the mood by being so shady... i'm sure they prolly started getting bad feedback from viewers at that point, so the fan service was prolly lessoned after that...

i gave up in the end, after sosuke took out bohemoth in 3 episodes... i mean... that thing was 500 feet tall, armour plated as hell, and it had a lander drive... and he still manages to waste it in as little as 3 episodes... well it's obvious sosuke was never going to lose at that point...

and i dont care how shallow the angle of the shot is... when sosuke nailed that stooge in the forehead when he was a kid mercinary, he shooda died straight up... and that excuse that he had a metal plate in his head (if the bullet was stopped by the plate, then he still would have had massive brain trauma, and a seveer concussion)... it'd wanna be made of galvanised adamantium to stop a bullet from a sniper rifle (was it a sniper rifle? or an AK -47? i cant remember.. but either way... the bullet would have blown the whole back of his skull off)...

i will admit the mecha was pretty cool... and it's prolly the reason i stuck with it so long... it's a good concept but poorly executed... i'll just stick with fumoffu...

Actually I would have to say Dual - Parallel Trouble . Both have mecha and is in a highschool setting. Other notables are Nadesico, Vandread and Overman King Gainer.

Dual and Overman King Gainer, you have to import from the US.

Dual is more like Tenchi Muyou! (which, really, is to be expected). Still, it could also be taken as how Eva should have been Wink

I have to agree with you there. Try to imagine getting rid of Gendo Ikari and placing Doctor Senada in his place. Just thinking about that sends me laughing. Very Happy

I think that Overman King Gainer can be classed as Comedy simply because of The Monkey.

Some otaku call Dual `Shin Seiki Muyou!' Wink
Shinji + Tenchi-> Kazuki
Asuka +Ayeka -> Sanada Mitsuki
Rei + Sasami -> D
Gendo + Katsuhito -> Sanada Ken
Misato + Ryoko Zero -> Yayoi

Yeah try Nadesico it is brilliant IMO.

Gunparade March also has a high school type setting and Giant Mecha but I would stongly advise against it.

It maybe good for a Christmas morning you are spending by yourself with no other DVDs/CDs/Books/Comics/'net connection in the house, nothing on TV except Christmas carols and corrosive acid rain outside. Wink
