Definitely the best of the three so far ... they actually were ambivalent if not outright critical of the cars, the challenge had more than a simple speed element, and they scrapped the gimmicky stunts by Brown.

The lawn bowls one also looks very promising ... actually reminds me of the classic football matches on TG UK.

That sounds like something right up my alley.
Why not split off and make a seperate thread on that sort of thing instead of limiting it to the Top Gear thread? Razz

Loved last night's ep. Esp the lawn bowls challenge. Starting to come into their own now but at the same time keeping that Top Gear Style happening.

Again, another good choice at celeb. So far their seleb selection has been one of the strongest parts of the show!

Cox needs to work on his interview technique, though.

He really didn't know what to do with Julia Zemiro.

The Star in a Bog Standard Car is the only thing I bother with now. I tried to stomach it for 3 eps.. which is 2 more eps than 99% of most other shows I dont like for first ep from.

I do, however, like the guests. I watch that bit.
God I hope they still keep playing the real show. I don't really want to have to .. er.. "watch" it elsewhere. *cough*

I certainly enjoyed it more than I did their first two eps, although the 'what were they thinking' segment still needs work :/

anyone see the episode tonight? i liked it, mainly watched it to see what route they would take when going from alice springs to the far north. was kinda hoping that they would follow the coast alittle earlier and longer (say from about Ingham and onwards) because driving on that section of highway you might as well be driving offroad Confused

and what a run by james morrison! didn't really pick him as a car and track nut.

next weeks episode looks interesting too. ugly betty (aka '08/09 sti) rallying against at helicopter on dirt roads and their first look at the return of godzilla (doubt it'd be an australian landed one though Razz )

Damn I hope SBS still give us the UK version. Surely they couldn't be so cruel as to keep this glorious match-up from our eyes!

Dammit ... I WANNA SEE THIS NOW!!!

So how many seasons will this last before Ch10 buys it, sucks the soul out of it then discards it after people stop watching it because it was better on SBS?

It probably depends on how long the licence that SBS owns will go for and if Ten will decide to purchase it or not. Of course if SBS were smart they would have the presenters on contracts that expire after their licence, when the licence is comming to an end. That way by not being able to get the presenters it will mean that other stations are less likely to bid for it.

Hmmm, well I've just seen that the UK series is comming back to 7:30pm Mondays on the 24th of November. I wonder if that means that the Aussie series is over already or if it'll be moved to another night.

First season of TGAU is only 8 episodes, so i assume the week before that date will be last ep of the season.

Apparently they only commissioned eight episodes for the first season so this is the end for now. Though Top Gear UK only runs between six to eleven episodes a year so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Though they properly reviewed the Nissan GT-R tonight and Steve made the comment that you 'really had to love "manga cartoons" to like the look of this thing.' Did anyone tell him that the GT-R's design was inspired by Gundam or was that just a surprisingly accurate observation?

I did notice that and I wondered. It was perhaps just a rather acute observation unless we see more mentions of manga from him in the future.

It wasn't as awesome as the Vanishing Point reference in this week's TGUK though.

About time too.

I am so not enjoying the Aussie one at all. Sorry, but that Charlie Cox is an idiot.

His replacement?

James Morrison.

I agree, very good news indeed. Morrisson should bring the same enthusiasm and knowledge of cars that Clarkson has, but without trying to be a Clarkson clone.

So the first episode of the new series just finished. What did everyone think? I personally found it boring, the new guy James had no personality and the show takes just itself too seriously. In saying that, it was the first episode so hopefully it gets better.

I can quite honestly say that I hated it, and that I far preferred what was on Channel Ten at that point. Which is saying something, as I get SBS as clear as a bell at my house, but only Ten intermittantly.

Just saw bits of it when they were racing the Lambo against the jetski thingy but didn't think it was that interesting. Is James Morrison, the musician a car buff? Was wondering why he was on there.

I think what they missed when franchising Top Gear was that we don't necessarily watch for the cars (I know I don't), but for the combination of personalities. Watching some of the UK Challenges on DVD the other night made me realise just how great the Clarkson-Hammond-May dynamic is. It won't matter how good the Aussie version gets, there is something intangible about the UK version that makes it a consistent winner.

I thought it was probably the best episode yet. Their admission that "What Were They Thinking" was a horrible segment was hilarious.

James Morrison is way better than that Coxy guy from the first season. He'll warm up to it a bit over the coming episodes.

The show really is going from strength to strength, I think.

Yeah I totally agree with that.

If things continue the way they are I think Top Gear Australia is in danger of becoming a car show instead of a show about about 3 guys stuffing around.

I love how, despite the fact that both shows have the exact same amount of factual content about cars, you guys think the UK version isn't a show about cars.

Tall poppy syndrome in full effect.

IMO the problem is that they're trying too hard to be like Top Gear, and as a result fall into the uncanny valley range of being similar, but being just off enough to completely ruin it for you.

I've actually been watching all the old seasons of Top Gear the last couple of months. Honestly, they're not that great- they really didn't get as good as they are for a few years, which is why I'm willing to give the Aus version a chance.

I had to drag myself back to see Morrison's first ep. How on earth someone so perfectly suited for that show still managed to seem out of place was a sure sign this AU Top Gear is a Tumor that needs to be removed.

HOWEVER...

Any show that suggests there is a chance that James Morrison is a "Baywatch type babe" is halirity and win in my book. That clever piece of editing had me chuckling for 10 minutes, and i am still smirking like a cat as I type this.

Honestly, I love Morrison. The guy is fantastic. Its not HIM.. for me, and everyone I know (IRL, at least) this version simply does not work. They need to stop trying so hard, the two not-morrison hosts need to stop yelling, and they just need to chillax and run with their inner stupid.

They also need a more impressive STIGGO. Honestly, I dont care how talented the .. er.. guy in the suit who we dont know who it is (*cough* 2 mins google) he does not look at all menacing or dangerous, or most importantly funny.

After having watched UK repeats for the last couple of weeks, and then being hit with the Aussie version last night all I can say is, well, I can't be bothered watching it anymore.

I'm sure some like it, but I just find the Aussie version extraordinarily dull. I mean they had an Evo X on and just took it around a race track with white-bread bland Morrison behind the wheel? This was a perfect setup for something street- or rally-based, the car's strengths, but instead it just showed how we should consider getting a Beamer instead.

Plus there just seems to be zero dynamic between the three ... I'm probably being harsh but there's so much manufactured friendliness between them that it's like they don't actually see one another unless there's a camera to film the event.

Sorry, but I've got plenty of DVDs that I can weait until the UK version starts up again.

It does. Go back and watch season 2 of UK Top Gear, and you'll realise that TGAU is much, much better.

Both shows had a presenter change in the second season, too, and that presenter was, at first, underutilised.

TGA got better with every episode in season 1, and season 2 is definitely off to a good start.

Honestly, I call tall poppy syndrome.

I had to drag myself back to see Morrison's first ep. How on earth someone so perfectly suited for that show still managed to seem out of place was a sure sign this AU Top Gear is a Tumor that needs to be removed.

Look at hosting a show like this like you would someone actually driving. Even if you've got all the potential in the world to be a brilliant driver, the first time you go out for a spin you're not going to do brilliantly, because everything's new to you and you need to learn from scratch. It's only when you've been at it for a while that you really have any chance of showing your true potential.

Give him time. So his first episode wasn't the best hour of TV ever. Big deal. You shouldn't be expecting it to be that brilliant right from the very start.

so nobody found it absolutely hilarious when they were trying to get stuff into the car from up in the scissor lift? Laughing

and i thought morrison's first test drive of a car was pretty good too. im with stormo on this one, enjoyed the first ep of the second season and it should only get better from now on.
