Thought i'd kick off a thread for the Death Note anime series starting in October this year.

I'm curious to see if will be true to the manga or change slightly like the live action movie adaption. Hopefully they'll just focus on the first half of the manga and create a filler series after that.

Plot Summary: Light Yagami (Or Raito) is an ace student with great aspects who's bored out of his mind. One day he finds the Death Note a notebook held by a shinigami (Death God). with the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create a perfect world. A world without crime or criminals. However when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer.

Japanese Cast:
Kappei Yamaguchi as L
Mamoru Miyano as Light
Aya Hirano as Misa
Haruka Kudou as Sayu
Shidou Nakamura as Ryuuku (YEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS)

Now I dont know exactly what this series is, never heard of it, but I reckon having a filler series would be the wrong way to go about, maybe a few filler episode more than usual but the optimum size for an anime series in my opinion is around the 20-30 episode mark.
Not short not long and doesnt really have anychance for the makers to lose their way and c**p on to much.

Large series lose their appeal.

Shocked
Why would you want filler?
The manga recently finished it's run, I believe there are 12 volumes in total. It's hugely popular, I wouldn't be surprised if they dragged this series endlessly just for an extra penny. Hopefully they don't; I think it can fit into 26 episodes nicely.

This is one intelligent series that I'm definately looking forward too.

I can't wait til this is released. I'm really interested in seeing what they choose to keep and what they gloss over. Love the manga, and I'm looking forward to the live action movies and the anime.

I hope so too. If at max a 50 ep series if they feel the urge to give it appropriate coverage. I've never read the manga, but i checked out the Wikipedia article for it and it doesnt seem half bad.

"Light Yagami is the top high school student of Japan who had, until recently, led a boring and uneventful life. That changed quickly when he found a mysterious notebook with the title "Death Note" on it, lying on the ground during the year 2003. Although initially skeptical, after realizing that the "Death Note" is a Shinigami's tool with the power to kill anyone whose name is written on its pages, Light decided to use it to "cleanse" the world of evil.

Soon the many unexplainable deaths of reported criminals was noticed, and Light becomes hunted by the Japanese police force and a mysterious detective known as "L." L quickly discovers that the murderer, that the publics dubs "Kira," is located in Japan, and that he can kill just by knowing someone's face and name. Light realizes that L is just as cunning, if not more intelligent than himself, and begins a cat and mouse chase with L to see who will be the first to have his identity exposed."

This is from the Wikipedia Article.

Well my thoughts can be summerised into one emote =P~

After reading that synopsis though, extending the series beyond 26 episodes (or around that mark) would be a real death sentence I reckon

It's a very smart seinen series. The synopsis doesn't do it any justice (atleast the manga). I'm surprised not many people here have heard of it- It's immensly popular in the U.S, where the manga is currently being released by VIZ.

No, it's not even out in Japan yet. It premieres in October.

I don't like the second half of the manga at all I got sick of it around 80 because you knew what was going to happen. I skimmed the last three chapters and I wasn't impressed. I'll probably buy upto volume 7 but no further then that unless I felt nostalgic.

I've always enjoyed this series a lot, but it did get more...dull around vol 5, then picked up in vol 7, then went back down a bit. I still enjoy it.
But one thing I've always wondered...why did they change Raito to Light?

I always find this bit of Trivia interesting but I guess it won't answer your question.
Raito's name can be translated to either Light or Write. Light as in bringing light and justice into the world, and write as in 'writing in the death note.'

I remember there was an editors note in an earlier release about the change.

According to various sites, the episode count is going to be 37. I guess it's going to cover all the manga volumes then. A couple more days to go!

I managed to view the first episode and the animation was nice and crisp. It follows the manga very well so you get the jist of it if you've read the manga.

Just watched the first episode of Death Note. I must say, I'm very impressed, really interesting concept coupled by some really interesting themes. Also loving the Gothic style of the presentation, great music and animation too. Looks like this will develop into a really great series.

The first episode of Death Note was pretty good setting up the concept and premise of the show, for a person who has not read the manga it still got me interested in it and I hope the series turns out to be great in the future episodes.

I watched the first episode too, I liked it for the most part. It's so uncanningly similar to Jigoku Shoujo though with the whole "choose someone to die" thing. It's a lot darker than I thought it would be though. But yeah, I'll definitely keep watching.

Anime > Manga?

I'm just really enjoying this so far well the two episodes that have aired that is. God that over the top operatic scene in the first episode where Light is going hard at the Death Note with his sharp arms movements is utter brilliant!

Oh I can't wait to see the Prince of Tennis esque match in all it's animated glory. You know what I'm talking about.

I love that scene, he's "striking down" all these criminals with a mechanical pencil. You know the old saying, "the pen is mightier then the sword" Razz! Looking forward to the soundtrack.
