Post stuff about your computer here. For example:

The Dell Precision 330 (2001)
OS: WinXP Professional 5.1 SP2 (Build #2600)
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 , 1.40 GHz, 256KB
Video: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro (Microsoft Corporation) (1024x768x32bpp 60Hz)
Sound: SB Live! Audio [ECA0]
Memory: 512MB
Uptime: 5d 22h 10m 55s
HD: 400.57 GB

The Acer (2005)
OS: WinXP Professional 5.1 SP2 (Build #2600)
CPU: Intel Celeron , 2.66 GHz, 256KB
Video: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller (1024x768x32bpp 60Hz)
Sound: Realtek AC97 Audio
Memory: 504MB
Uptime: 22h 24m 57s
HD: 224.59 GB

The Compaq Armada M700 Laptop (2001)
OS: Win2K Professional 5.0 SP4 (Build #2195)
CPU: Intel Pentium III, 796 MHz, 256KB
Video: ATI RAGE MOBILITY AGP (English) (800x600x32bpp 60Hz)
Sound: ESS Maestro
Memory: 256MB
Uptime: 5d 22h 19m 10s
HD: Free: 18.62 GB

Also, for further chatter about system specs, the Dell has a Pioneer 108 DVD burner which has performed flawlessly for two years, whilst the Acer has a Lite-On (I forget what model) that is crap and took chunks out of a CD recently - fortunately it didn't "explode"....the laptop has no burner, only a DVD-ROM drive.

Remember, this is NOT a contest! Lots of you out there will have a better computer than these three. Big deal. These computers work just fine. This thread is so we can all just show off what we've got, chatter about what works best for you, and what you'd like to get. Maybe even make a joke or two like this:

C:
|-My Documents
| |- My Music
| |- My Pictures
| |- My Videos
| |- My pr0n
|-Program Files
| |- Firefox
| |-Winamp
| |- Sony Rootkit

A message to the mods: This thread may have been done before, but I couldn't find it if it has been. Also, this is not "Computer Prioblems 2007".

REI (My daughter, 10+ years old now ^_^)
OS: WinXP Professional SP2
CPU: Intel Pentium D , 2.66 GHz, 256KB
Video: ATI RADEON 9550 (1024x768 32b @ 85Hz)
Sound: On-board
Memory: 768MB
Uptime: Seldom more than 24 hours. I like to keep my memory clean.
HD:
BALTHAZAAR - 40GB
MALCHIOR - 80GB

I plan on getting more memory before RO2 comes out, and going to add a 3rd HDD when I eventually fill up these two (no prizes for guessing my next HDDs name).
Also going to be doing a complete clean-up in a few months, and starting her up with both XP-ProSP2 and Ubuntu. Also going to get her a new TV card tomorrow coz the stupid one DSE sold me doesn't work (and the manufacturers were no help when I e-mailed them Evil or Very Mad

Haruna
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
CPU; Intel Core duo 2, 2.4ghz
Video: Nivida 7950 GT 500 MB
Sound: Realtek - something along those lines, it is on the mobo.
Memory: 2GB
Uptime: i am not sure.
HD:
C *can't be bothered naming* - 10,000 rpm 120GB (for OS and programs)
Setsuna and Konoka - 2x 500gb (you are probably wondering why so much, i have been getting into video editing lately. As you would know if you have ever done this... it can eat up HD space very quickly)

I only recently got this, not even a month old. Such a nice change compared to my old struggled everytime i turned it on HP.

My desktop is Hanachirusato. some flavour of netburst, about 2.4, with a three-quarter gig ram and a rather small HDD [software only, /home NFS mounted off hana]. No case, which makes it both extraordinarilly compact, and rather difficult to transport.

My server is Yurikamome: Sempron 2k, half-gig ram, and 3x200GB HDDs running RAID.

Both run Debian Sarge, single-boot. I've got some other machines in the house, but those are the only ones that both belong to me and are fully functional.

Golden - 2003, a few upgrades since then
OS: WinXP Home SP2
CPU: Socket 478 Intel Pentium 4 (w/HT), 3.2ghz
Video: Gigabyte ATi Radeon 9600XT 256mb (dual CRT monitors - 2x 1024x768x32bpp @ 85hz)
Sound: Realtek on-board, running 4 speakers as dual-stereo through (a) crusty PC 'multimedia' speakers, and (b) a crusty old amp Smile Does the job though
Memory: 1024mb DDR400
Uptime: Every now and again Smile
HDD: 1x 40gb (OS, applications, some data, partitioned), 1x 200gb (misc stuff, a couple of games)
Optical drives: Lite-On CDRW-DVD-ROM, Lite-On DVD+/-RW

Game Centre - lounge room media box
OS: Win98SE
CPU: AMD Athlon (Thunderbird core) 1200+
Video: Nvidia FX 5500 128mb w/S-Video out (640x480x16bpp - easy on the eyes given its running on a 4:3 SD TV via S-Video Smile)
Sound: Sound Blaster Live! Value, stereo, through an AV receiver
Memory: 512mb PC-133 SDRAM
Uptime: Every now and again Smile
HDD: 1x 6.4gb (OS, data, partitioned), 1x 10gb HDD (more misc crap, partitioned)
Optical drives: Lite-On DVD-ROM

My main PC does a reasonable job for the most part, but my 40gb HDD is noisy as hell, and the system chugs along with my paranoia-induced Norton SystemWorks installation. Still, it does a reasonable job, and I've maxed out what the mobo can do, and to be honest, I couldn't justify upgrading to a new PC (a) with Vista around the corner, and (b) I'd rather save the money for something else (mortgage/holiday/random stuff). I don't game much on the PC and mainly use it for random multimedia stuff, work, study, internet, my wife uses it to update her iPod, that kind of thing. A speedy PC would be nice, but I can't be bothered spending the time or money Razz

The lounge room box is put together from a pile of old components I had lying around. Makes for a nice media centre type thing, and the only cost was my time and a new video card (the previous GeForce MX 440 died while I was in the middle of installing software - looks like the RAM imploded, it's the second time its happened to me on GF MX440 cards, which lets face it, are pretty craptacular be default Smile), but that cost next to nothing anyways. The media box has the old super-quiet PSU I installed in my main PC until I bought a new case with a quiet PSU included, and the HSF died on the CPU a year or so ago and has been replaced with a quieter, more efficient block. I could probably overclock it, but don't want to throw out any extra heat - 1.2ghz is fine for what I use it for. I've got one of those quiet 80mm fans lying around, so I'm planning on throwing that in there, but I'm gone to have to drill an 80mm hole since there isn't provision for one on the back of the case... and I've been lazy and haven't gotten around to doing it yet Smile I'm contemplating throwing a wireless PCI card in the back of this one, but I'll see how I go - laziness might win out there Smile

And to Inniss, on my old PC I used to name my three HDDs after Eva stuff too Smile

Sauron - My good old workhorse

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
CPU: Intel Pentium III, 450 MHz
RAM: 448 MB
Graphics: GeForce 4200, 128MB
Sound: Sound Blaster PCI64
Pri. Master: Maxtor 40 GB
Pri. Slave: Pioneer DVR-106D
Sec. Master: Seagate 160 GB
Sec. Slave: Pioneer DVD-106
Uptime: At least 1 week.

My next system will be a complete overhaul. Dual core minimum, with a 8800 class graphics processor. I'll probably ditch Windows platform all together, as I'm not interested in Vista. So it will be either OS X or Linux. It will take ages for me to readjust to these platforms - and I'll probably spiral into post WinXP depression and s**t.

Really old desktop: Digimortal (custom built, left it with my mother when I moved out of home)
Purchase Date: February 2001
Upgraded:
- May 2001: Added RAM
- Jan 2002: Upgraded to DVD-ROM
- Mar 2002: Rebuilt into new tower (power supply failure)
- Jul 2002: Replaced Monitor (it asploded!)
- Jan 2003: Replaced HDD
- Feb 2003: Upgraded graphics card
- Aug 2003: Added RAM
- May 2004: Upgraded graphics card
- Jun 2004: Added USB 2.0 card
- Sep 2004: Updated peripherals, added network card
- Dec 2004: Upgraded to DVD-RW
- Mar 2005: Replaced monitor (again!)
Old specs
OS: Win 98SE
CPU: 1.1ghz AMD Athlon
RAM: 128mb
HDD: 40gig something something.
Monitor: BENQ 15"
GFX: 64mb GeForce 2
Last-known Specs
OS: WinXP Pro SP2
CPU: 1.1ghz AMD Athlon
RAM: 128 + 256 + 256 = 640?
HDD: 120gig something or other.
Monitor: BENQ 17"
GFX: 128mb Radeon Sapphire 9800SE
Sound: Onboard.
Status: Probably still running. I'm rather proud of this PC. As far as gaming machines go, this one held up pretty well over the years it was my primary piece of equipment.

Old Desktop: Cuddles (Never buying from Harvey Norman again - overpriced and underpowered)
Purchase date: Approx. October 2005.
Upgraded:
-December 2005: Added USB 2.0 card.
OS: WinXP Pro SP2
CPU: Intel Celeron 2.8ghz
RAM: 256mb
HDD: 40gig. Not sure of brand.
Monitor: BENQ 15" Flatscreen LCD
GFX: None/whatever's built in
Status: Unknown. Was intended to be sold on to my girlfriend's father, but for some reason it stopped working when it got there. Could be due to a power supply problem at that house, as the same thing happened to his old PC when they moved in there.

Current Desktop: Giggles (ACER package of some kind)
Purchase Date: November 2006
Upgraded: Never
OS: WinXP Home SP2
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.06ghz
RAM: 1gb
HDD: 100gb
Optical: Unsure of exact specs, but it's a pretty fast CD-RW/DVD-RW.
Monitor: ACER 19" Widescreen LCD
GFX: None/whatever's built in. Planning on getting something better. All I require from a PC in terms of game performance is that it can run the Sims 2 (since we have a 360 and a Wii) and while this one does it just fine, it doesn't look so pretty.
Misc: 9 in 1 memory card reader. USB 2.0 standard.
Status: Been running for about four or five days.

Laptop: Flippy HP Entertainment Laptop.
Purchase Date: November 2006
Upgraded: Never
OS: WinXP Home SP2
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8ghz
RAM: 1gb
HDD: 80gb
Optical: Unsure of exact specs, but it's a pretty fast CD-RW/DVD-RW.
Monitor: 15.1"
GFX: I'll have to check. Runs Sims 2 better than 'Giggles' (above), but I need a mouse for it to play - track pad just doesn't cut it.
Sound: Onboard.
Misc: On board/removable remote control for media functions - it's basically built for viewing video and playing music. Wi-fi/Bluetooth 802.1g standard.
Status: Being as my girlfriend is off work today, it's probably on her lap on the couch while she watches season 5 of Star Trek: TNG.

For those with Core 2 Duo CPUs, how are you finding the performance? Are they as good as the press makes them out to be?

I'd love one, but like I said before, I don't think I'd really make use of the processing power Razz

I don't think we're using the processing power of our laptop to it's greatest extent, but the system performs well.
Lately it seems to be hanging when loading windows though - for maybe 15 seconds it sits completely unresponsive on the desktop wallpaper before beginning to load icons or the taskbar.

Yeah, sure, why not.

OS: XP
CPU: Intel Core Duo 6600
Motherboard: eVGA 680i SLi
Video: NVIDIA Geforce 8800GTX, 19" Phillips LCD; also 32" Samsung LCD (for watching movies etc)
Sound: Creative XFi music (the budget one, not worth more money); Logitech z5500 Digital speakers
Memory: 2gb Corsair Twin2X
HD: ~1.1tb. Couple of WDs and Seagates (the 320gb 7200.10 is loud as a banshee during seeking, I had to buy a silencer case for it)
Case: Coolermaster Stacker 830 /w 3 120mm intake fans, 1 exhaust (video card and psu have their own exhausts)
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower 750w
Mouse: Logitech MX1000 wireless
Keyboard: Logitech G15

Thanks to the 120mm fans (and the HDD silencer on the Seagate), the case is whisper quiet. Well, as whisper quiet as a case can be with open mesh sides. The stock Intel cooler is excellent at its job so I haven't bothered replacing it.

I think the favourite thing about my computer is that it plugs up to my TV, and I can use my wireless mouse to control it from the comfort of my beanbag. <3

The iBook I sold to a friend is called, Ginkei, too. Very Happy

..and one is black, the other is white.

I have an unintentional habit of naming computers after space ships though. The computer that Ikaruga replaced (and by "replaced" I mean, "evolved into when no original parts were left") was called Nadesico (which went through two incarnations, the latter referred to by HB as "Y-Unit Nadesico".)

HOW MANY COMPUTERS DO YOU NEED?

Tachikoma wrote:
My next system will be a complete overhaul. Dual core minimum, with a 8800 class graphics processor. I'll probably ditch Windows platform all together, as I'm not interested in Vista. So it will be either OS X or Linux.

Why buy a graphics card if your not running windows? Cant play hardly any games on linux/mac ...

My comp, called Mr Wendal:
AMD64 3000+
1GB RAM
2x old 128MB 6600GT's in SLI
XP
300GB HD
Runs all new games like crap even though it's only 1 year old Evil or Very Mad

Cos I want to program it. Having said that, knowing me I'll probably cave-in and setup a multi boot config.

Dunno. But no matter how many I have, I somehow manage to find myself in a situation where I need more.

I only have one PC that I'm using, with my previous PC is in a closet as a backup in case I kill the current one.

OS: XP Home SP2
MB: DFI Infinity 865PE
CPU: Celerion 2.8 Ghz overclocked to 3.1 Ghz
RAM: 2 Gig
Video: Geforce 7600/256 Meg, AGP.
Case: Antec Sonata (very quiet but I want the system quieter still)
17 inch LCD monitor.
DVD burner
Disks: one 250 Gig, one 80 Gig and the disk out of the previous PC, 12 Gig.

My PC is set up as a dual boot system with two bootable XP partitions on the 250 Gig disk. When I start the PC I have it set up to prompt me which partition I want to boot from. One boot partition is for general use/games/etc and has other "important" system utils such as anti-virus, backup software, etc. The second boot partition is for music writing/recording that I keep as lean and mean as possible. There's also a third partition on that disk which is where I install games and other general software.

The 80 Gig disk is empty at the moment, it was my main disk unti 2 weeks ago but I decided to get more disk space ince it was 75% full. I'll use it for general storage and other temporary arrangements. The 12 Gig disk from the previous PC is actually a Win 98 setup with some software that I can't reinstall under XP for various reasons but want to hang onto. I can run the software on it that I still want to use in admin mode under XP. I could set it up as a third boot partition but really don't have significant need to do that.

The system is pretty quiet but I still want to reduce the noise so I'm seriously considering a fanless watercooling system for it like the Zalman Resorator.

An LDAP server, an everything-else server, a laptop, a desktop, and two machines for misc testing/development/experimentation.

Six, give-or-take?

I always need two. One to do my work on, and one to store all my **** on. The laptop is just an added bonus I guess. Seeing as my work relies on using all three operating systems, and having a fully functional server.

I can't remember if the XT is better than the Pro (I have the 256mb XT), but the last couple of games I threw in my PC worked reasonably well (Hitman BM, FEAR and Ghost Recon). I mean, we're talking a low frame rate (30-40fps probably, I'm going by what I perceived as opposed to taking any real numbers) and you have to tweak your visuals, but yeah, it's not too bad. I thought it would have struggled more with the above, but I was happy with the result. I'm guessing the CPU/RAM help as well, not that a P4/HT 3.2ghz CPU and 1gb RAM is much these days Smile

Mind you, I hardly game on the PC, so for most of the PC gamers here, it probably wouldn't be up to scratch Wink Seeing some of the core duo and high-end setups here put my PC to shame (Waffle-man, I'm looking at you Very Happy).

Well, I think you should have a naming convention of some kind, and I just happened to pick characters and other things from anime.

And in any case, not all of mine are Japanese names. One of them's Chinese, and my old iBook had an Abh name.
