Question: Could the type of RAM on a video card make it incompatibly with some motherboards?

I ask because most decent video cards have DDR3 now, my current card is DDR2, and I was wondering if that meant my motherboard only took video cards wit DDR2.

Or does any video card work regardless of RAM type, so long as it's a PCI card to PCI slot and has the power to run it?

Hm I always thought Macs never really liked XP or stuff of that sort.
I've been wrong then, but still on the other hand do they come in single or 2 button click variety mouse pads?
If so and if I ever thought of a Mac that'ld be a big thing to get used to, control wise.

i've got a Macbook Pro and it used the one button system (to get the right click you hold down the "Command" button and then click the mouse button) if you can't stand doing that just buy a bluetooth 2 button mouse that works with Mac OS 10 and you'll have the 2 buttons... I bought a Logitech 2 button bluetooth mouse thinking I wouldn't be able to stand the one click system, but I've found myself never using it (unless I'm in windows) and the Multi touch trackpad (that they use on the ipod touch's) is awesome!

So sometimes my computer makes the reset noise, sometimes more than once, then it freezes. I donno what the problem is, I'm thinking it's hardware wise.

i'm having an issue with system lag.

intermittently, while playing games (normal browsing, and other things don't do this) the system goes into some kind of heart attack for a few seconds, and then resumes like nothing had happened. this happens at least once a minute.

i've tried reinstalling mobo and video card drivers, to no avail. i'm trying to avoid a format if possible, so does anyone have any ideas?

duct tape and wd 40 wont do it for you then Razz

It could be the cpu locking up at 100% on a background task. You'd probbably have to have task manager running in the background though to find out.
Tried re-installing the games though?

Could be temperature issues. Something might be getting a little hot or something.

On that topic, it's most likely the graphics card that's overheating, due to the fact that it only plays up when playing a game. If you haven't changed your rig's setup for a long time, then the graphic card's fan is probably clogged up with dust. Grab a can of compressed air or a vacuum cleaner and clean that sucker out. I had a similar problem which was solved by giving my graphic card's fan a good clean.

if your gsme dies for no reason, the problem is likely to be 1 of 4 things...

driver issue with sound or audio or in some case both

hardware specs to low for game to run

hardware failure may required to remove graphics clean the pci-e bus to remove dust from it with compressed air, blow dust from graphics card with compressed air whilst outside the case, clean pins of graphics card with metho or alcohol incase of the contacts being dirty..

hardware mismatch: most common problem when mixing nvidia & ati chipsets never the twain shall meet..

What video card are you running? Just that it'll make it easier to know in terms of what settings to change.

I guess one option in the meantime is to run it windowed then drag it over to the 2nd monitor

Also uppn trying to remove a stubbotn securing screw it snapped off.
Oh well it can still work without it though.
Damn chord and yes I am typing in yellow screen display currently, not easy so forgive any errors wich may come through.

OKAAAY!

I think I got a big problem. My stupid dad was on my main PC and I think he's downloaded some virus or malware or something, because every so often my PC, seemingly from nowhere starts playing some radio show, something about mobile insecurity test. It's a bunch of people playing some game or something. The big problem is I can't find the damn thing and neither can the anti-virus.

Curse you, father!

Loose connection; even on digital cables, the signals representing different colours [RGB] are sent through different wires. Hrm... if it's gone yellow, then the red signal's the one that's dropped out [and if it'd gone pale blue [cyan], it'd be the green signal, and if it had gone pink [magenta], it'd be the blue signal.] Either the cable's not seating properly or one of the wires has snapped somewhere and is only making contact when the other wires are in just the right position.

The later answer sounds like the problem.
Although the weird part is I have NOT severly bent or twisted the wire, so maybe it's not setted probably.
I know it's NOT my LCD tv as it displays colour heck, right now I have it on a lighter shade of yellow colour but with some colour on things visible.
Wich I admit is an improvement over last night.
But this is easy to remedy just going ot have to go and buy a new 5 metre one from Dicksmith Powerhouse come Thursday evening.

Hah, I got some bizarre problem for a brand new mobo. Keyboards don't work right after the BIOS POST. You name it, I tried both USB or PS/2 keyboards. Nope, BIOS won't respond to key strokes, even though it detected the keyboard. Funnily enough USB, keyboards start to work as soon after the Windows driver was loaded. Can't say the same for PS/2. I think the BIOS is shot to ****.

Thinking about installing Linux on the mac as a 3rd OS, though i have no idea about the whole Linux thing, what would be the best one for a linux "n00b" as it were. Not that interesting in the coding side of stuff, just looking at an alternate OS

Can't you run it in a VM? I think that would be the best place to start if you wanted to experiment with the penguin.

Ok so I've got a big question or 2 possibly for this thread.
I've been sorting out some stuff so I can record videos off my LCD tv when playing the PS2 and uploading them on to youtube.
Got some questions if people have recommended methods for recording methods and formats, chords also and finally not to mention a program for video editing and stuff like that.

You'd need a TV card with Video In.

Don't expect the quality of your computer screen to be great on the TV. I do that with Artemis, and to read any text, I have to use the Magnifier tool. But it's still cheaper than shelling out $500 for a new screen.

I believe when you get a TV card you also get software with it, though off the top of my head i don't know any, at least within a good price range, unless you want to go Adobe Premiere.

Cord, not Chord

I actually already have my LCD runing as my laptop's screen ever since the built in screen died.
So that is not the issue.
I just want to set things up so I can record stuff off my tv and then upload it on to youtube and stuff like that.

So, I have been looking around for a rather powerful laptop for gaming/editing purposes.

I am rather interested in the Gateway P-7811FX But I was wondering if anyone had a different option/model/make/etc.. that would be similar/better. Looking around the same price if not a little lower.

that's a good buy for a laptop. if you dont mind having celeron based version of the core 2 duo processor, looking at the reviews people seem to like the cheap laptop for ram and cpu...

though I suspect the laptop may not have a quad core in it, looking the cpu specs it's either tri-core or dual core cpu, looking at issues some people had with playing games on the laptop at high res settings either the ram on the video card is crap or gateway used value pack crap ram which locks up the lappie without warning when you try to exceed the game parameters with high settings which causes it lock up...

to me this laptop smell's like an entry - mid level office use machine with either a dual cure with 3mb cached per core or a tri-core with 2mb cache per core...

it would be interesting to see how much ram this laptop could take....

to answer the above two posts.

blackops - stop licking the walls and open the garage door before you warm the car up in the morning........

arms Razz , you are back in aust now, try a hp or a dell , the gaming style of laptops are xps for dell or a few hp's, but depends what you want, just how much power do you want, what app's do you want?

while you can get alot of power in a 17" laptop it's really not THAT portable, and alot less powerful than a similar priced desktop. and a 15.4" laptop isn't going to be a really powerful gfx workstation if thats what you are after.

mid range power you'll be able to squeeze out of it, but again it depends on actual needs and budget.

the only flaw to your comment i geek i don't own a car..

from what i was told about the centrino's they were low cost versions of the core duo family line of cpu...

looking the hdx-1 looking at it's price it's been built as a desktop replacement. though i got better places to spend 3-4.5 k on a pc..

bearded - Trust me, I would love a desktop, but the problem is I need it to be portable. This will be for work/personal use.

Honestly, I just need something with a great GFX card, RAM and CPU. Using it mainly for gaming (All varities) and Dreamweaver/Photoshop.

So today I tried some things with an RCA splitter for the signals in hopes it would work, well it almost did.
But only thing is I now get static lines.
Also of note my sound card seems to make static blotches on my laptop speakers when recording, like what a speaker would do sometimes if a portion of an MP3 song is blank or something.

So if anyone can add any helpful thoughts go ahead.

arms try the dell xps series , http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1730?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs

thats the 17" one although there is a 15" version too.

if it's going to be used for work, make sure you get a nbd onsite warrenty , for a year or two atleast, no sense in cheaping out then not being able to work for 2 weeks while your laptop is being repaired.

Yes but it may not "clock" as high. to most people other than ePeen Hardcore that means Meh.

Only ever used USB external so not sure on just how this SATA/eSATA thing works. Can I Ghetto up some SATA HDDs externally (drill some holes, run the cables out) or do I ned specific eSATA brackest, chips. They will need to be Hot Swapable, not permanent.

So apparently my mate reckons what could be causing my problems is macrovision.
It makes some sense, but next thing is how to get around it or disable when I'm trying to record something?

I think my sound card is stuffed. I cant record my voice from a mic, and people cant hear me on skype.

Are these settings right for capturing my voice?

xubuntu 8.10 volume control

Funny thing is, i can hear my voice if I turn the MIC channel up, karaoke style, but the computer cant capture it.

yeah that doesn't look right.

Put the volume to max for all of them and then use process of elimination to find which one controls the mic.

Can i put a DDR2 400 ram stick in a DDR2 533 slot? Will it work?

Note that if you're running a factory PC (or any CPU expecting 533mhz FSB), and if the standard RAM is 533mhz FSB, there's an excellent chance it needs to be; you won't be just throttling the RAM bus, but you'll also be downclocking the CPU. If you keep the FSB where it is, you'll be asking a lot of the 400mhz module; expect to become good mates with Kernel Errors.

RAM is currently marginally cheaper than tanbark -- I'd shell for something matching what you've already got.

Someone asked about DDR3 ram on graphics cards: Doesn't matter a zack that your MoBo is using DDR2; the video RAM is running on its own little (steaming fast) bus, and doesn't care about what's going on inside the rest of your computer.

And now a cautionary tale: If you're buying multiple double height graphics cards, make sure that they don't blank off the airflow to one another. Unless you're going to take the factory heatsink off and replace it with a couple of waterblocks, anyway, in which case you'll (really) want side inflow and outflow connectors; right angle pieces won't cut it.

On the gaming laptop query: How mobile do you need to be? If the answer is "I'll not be using it on my lap, just on a rapid succession of desks" (more common than you might think), I'd wonder if someone like Alienware hasn't the answer you seek? Obviously, a laptop the size of the Nimitz and with a battery life of seconds is going to be a pain in the far side of the lap if you're hoping to get any work done (or hitting zombies with a stilson; I know which I'd favour) on the Kansai Commuter. But I doubt if there's any laptop that doesn't come with 40 kilos of battery that could drive a couple of loaded up GPU's and a CPU for more than an hour.

Falk.

Most modern mobos are able to time RAM independently of the FSB, usually via clock ratios, or via a similar method. More capable BIOSes will automatically determine RAM clock and timings.
