What will be the actual aspect ratio of the upcoming animated Asterix movie releases in September? they are listed as 'Improved widescreen video and full French and English!', but there is currently no mention of actual aspect ratios in the online catalogues.

'Asterix the Gaul' and 'Asterix and Cleopatra' are meant to be 1:33:1, so I hope Madman aren't going to be releasing cropped versions.

Ripper!

I had no idea MM were releasing these, I already have them but will re-purchase proper widescreen versions in a flash.

The dual language, and extras are good reasons to buy again too.

I just hope Madman releases these animated Asterix movies in their correct aspect ratios.

On a related note, Madman have the films rights to the Asterix and the Olympic Games live action movie, according to the OFLC web site too.

The aspect ratios have been added, for the animated Asterix movies been released on DVD this month:
Asterix and Cleopatra - 1.77:1 Widescreen (16:9)
Asterix the Gaul - 1.77:1 Widescreen (16:9)
The Twelve Tasks of Asterix - 4:3 Original Aspect Ratio

I don't know why Madman bothered, when all three movies are been released in the incorrect aspect ratios Sad

A review at DVD Times, of the DVD collection released in the UK, makes it clear the correct aspect ratio of each of the animated movies.

If you follow the links in the review, a review of the DVD collection released in France, and comparisons of the various DVDs releases of Asterix vs. Caesar and Asterix and the Big Fight are available too.

There are still no aspect ratio details listed for animated Asterix movie releases in November 2008.

Unfortunately the exact aspect ratios aren't even listed on the DVD covers, when I checked out the September 2008 releases in shops.

Aspect ratio details for the November 2008 releases have been added to the online catalogue:
Asterix and the Big Fight - 16:9 Widescreen Full Height Anamorphic
Asterix Conquers America - 4:3 Original Aspect Ratio

The exact aspect ratio of Asterix and the Big Fight still isn't clear, but at least the widescreen presentation is correct.

Asterix Conquers America suffers an incorrect aspect ratio, although the trailer is actually shown in widescreen.

The correct aspect ratios (based on French releases) are:
Asterix and Cleopatra - 1.33:1
Asterix the Gaul - 1.33:1
The Twelve Tasks of Asterix - 1.66:1
Asterix and the Big Fight - 1:85:1
Asterix Conquers America - 1:85:1
Asterix in Britain - 1.66:1
Asterix Versus Caesar - 1.66:1

I wonder if Madman will manage to get the aspect ratios right, for the DVD releases of the last last two movies.

Does Madman have any plans to release these in a Boxset similar to the Tintin set?? If so, I'll wait till that comes out and get them all..

ditto the Lucky Luke dvd's..

Wish they'd release Om Pa Pa as well.. still, not even sure if they got animated. I remember reading them along with Asterix, Lucky Luke and Tintin.
Wish I'd had the brains to collect them all when they originally got released.. harder to find some in print these days..

Interestingly, despite what the online catalogue may say, The Twelve Tasks of Asterix is in the correct 16:9 aspect ratio. So I guess they got that one right at least. It's possible that they made a similar mistake with the listing of Asterix Conquers America, but I haven't seen the DVD so I don't know.

But is the right aspect ratio (1:66:1) used? otherwise it is still been slightly cropped.

No, Asterix Conquers America is listed 4:3 on the back cover.

It's not 1.66:1, it has indeed been cropped to 16x9. So it's not perfect, but not nearly as bad as a 4:3 release.
