Yes, it isn't in the Manga. (I quite liked the movie =D)

How much does the manga differ from the original series anyway?

There are some similarities between Manga and Anime up until Greed dies then both stories head in different directions.
I love both the Anime and Manga. The Anime is great on it's own but when it's compared to the Manga...The Manga is better. I was blown away when i read it =D.

Fair enough, I thought the movie was ok, but could've done without the Nazi plot... it seemed a little forced and generic.

(like... OMG THE NAZIS ARE BAD GUYS AGAIN!!!)

The fights were mucho awesome though... and it made me happy to see Hughes alive again

I quite liked Al's voice
And most of the voice casting pleased me
Except maybe Kimbly, and Ed's voice gets annoying after a while
But having most of the cast return would be incredible
Cant wait

Ah, i see...but it was kinda relevant to the time and place.
It was set in Germany in 1923 when there were Nazi's.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1923_in_Germany

Quote:
November 8-9 (1923)- Members of the National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi), led by Adolf Hitler, fail in a coup attempt to overthrow the Bavarian government in Munich, Germany which is later known as the "Munich Putsch".

Kalgar wrote:

They probably did it to create Verisimilitude (make the movie seem more realistic.).

I do understand that, its probably that I've seen a lot of stuff where Nazis are the bad guys (mainly in games, but hey that's my background Razz), and seeing the Nazis yet AGAIN turning to occultisms to achieve their goals (like in Bloodrayne, Castle Wolfenstein series, and Hellsing) just felt a little off.

Especially since the Nazi occultisms were done much better elsewhere too (read: Hellsing) Razz

Either way, I was still entertained by a large portion of the movie - I just think that it was probably better off left as just the series.

I can't wait for the new series Very Happy A friend's gonna lend me the manga too so I can get a look ahead Razz

The standard (and I use the term loosely) of English on this forum never ceases to amaze me.

Anyway back to the topic at hand; yes the manga is long, but there are probably a few side stories that don't necessarily need to be included, and it's possible they'd be able to condense some of what is there. Plus, at 52 episodes the last FMA series wasn't exactly short so I'm not sure why there appears to be an issue with another long series.

EDIT:
Besides, in comparison to things like Bleach/Naruto/Ranma etc, it'd probably still be a 'short' series.

i would have winged it and claimed to be making an ironic statement (or a typo), but anyway...

i thought the point in which the stories diverged was about 5 volumes through the manga (just a guess, as i dont have my collection with me), but around half way through the anime
So if the anime were to follow another 15+ volumes of manga on top, that would be an EPIC series
Though, that said, the anime did have a fair bit of filler material

I was actually complaining about the standard of spelling, which is going downhill at an increased rate recently, on the forum as a whole, not just the FMA section...actually this is one of the better spots on the boards...
And not typos mind, but full-blown spelling bugger-ups.
As for grammar I can handle people not using things like semi-colons and capital letters, but I ignore anything more than two sentences long that doesn't have commas and/or fullstops in it.

/offtopic rant.

Sorry, not directing that at anyone here, just getting something off my chest.

FYI, the new FMA series is apparently going to be called "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" according to the Anime News Network. Hmmmm.

Reading the ANN article, that's the English title it's going under in Asia. It doesn't confirm that it will be the title used in the US, but it seems likely.

It looks like it could turn out to be a lot darker than the last series as well

Official Confirmation that the new series will follow the manga and that there are no set number of episodes.

(second video)

Short transcript by http://amestris-star.livejournal.com/28996.html?view=9540#t9540

Quote:
Made a short transcript of the interview with the BONES guy:

Some information on the series itself

The previous anime was a story that was carried away all through the feature film.

This time were making a new project based on the original manga. We’re trying to give it a look that is completely different from the first series. In terms of the original manga, when the first series was released, the comics were up to volume 3 or 4.

At this point there are about 21 volumes of the manga on sale, so using that material as a base, we’re trying to create an interesting new look. Put that way, when compared to the last series, the expansive world of the original manga, the detailed meanings of the original drawings, the original story and its involving storyline, the anime will bring all of that together.

When asked on the length of the second series…

We haven’t decided yet. But well this is the second time, so we want to make it impressive.

We don’t know exactly when the original manga will end, but we, the animators, hope to keep it going.

Yay! >w< Sorry for the long post XD

The manga at current does seem to be heading towards a climax, but its still hard to say how much longer it will last. I'm eagerly awaiting the animated version of volumes 11-13 though, right now its my favourite segment of the manga.

The new screens sure do look nice, though.

When we can reasonably expect to see this new series in stores?
An earlier post suggested DVD's would become available 9 months after rights are assigned. I assume such a popular title will attract fierce competition for rights, but how much time is the norm before rights are issued?
If we are looking at mid 2010 I hope whoever gets it puts it straight to Blu-ray!

This is enough to get me to come back to the madboards... in hope that the FMA thread fires up again.

If that happened (and I hope not because I don't have a BRD player and don't forsee getting one in the near future) I'd probably still buy it if it came in tins again, regardless of whether I could watch them or not.

Be as frustrating as all hell though.

Quite right! Badly worded on my part. I didn't mean to infer an exclusive BD release but I'd hope by the time the new FMA is initally released, Hi-Def BD would also be available.
I love the original series and I think it's great they're going back to the original source manga, but I hope they see it through to it's conclusion.

*giggles*

I can't wait ^_^

I would gather a guess that the manga is heading towards a conclusion seeing as everything's ramping up but also because of them starting the series now, keep in mind that the manga is released monthly where as episodes would be weekly so the anime would likely catch up to the manga very quickly

seems to be in widescreen and the quality looks good, hopefully they don't laze off later on, it's devastating having started watching the Bleach Arrancar Arc and the animation quality has gone down the tubes even though (imo) the story will still be good till the Arrancar Arc ends

youtube links don't work btw Sad

it does appear to be starting from scratch from some of the pics shown but any confirmation? would really rather they start from ep1 rather than assume people have seen the original series

unfortunately I won't be seeing this for ages (unlike some of you Wink ) because I don't think i'll be able to stand subs, tried it on my DVD once, couldn't stand it, too used to the dub, spent more time picking out Bleach voices Laughing

Undecided number of episodes.
Looks like we're in for the long haul. Nice. Smile

this may also mean that there will be breaks in seasons, as not to catch up to the manga too quick. not that i mind i would rather it done this way.

Yeah I thought the underlying theme throughout both the first series and the movie was that of the close bond between two brothers? To name the new series 'Brotherhood' makes complete sense to me.

Trailer looks awesome. Cool Cool

Well... You'll be seeing it a lot sooner if today's announcement is anything to go by.
Although, I should imagine it being subtitled.

Yep, it will be in japanese; screening via the web. According to the announcement, Madman managed to snag it before it screens in America. Don't know if I'll bother watching it until the English dub.

First ep of the new FMA series will be aired at Supanova Brisbane, if anyones lucky enough to live up there.

while i'm not disappointed and can see where you are coming from, I prefer the original designs atm admittedly but I can understand the change and it does seem to be closer to the manga
