Is there such a thing as a shinmegami (death goddess)? And can one occupy a laptop computer, like the death god in the Death Note anime?

"shinmegami" sounds more like it would translate to "new goddess" if you ask me...

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think there is a "gender" difference when it comes to Death Gods/Gods of Death.

Rukia in "Bleach" is referred to as a "Shinigami" or "Soul Reaper"

When it comes to "Megami" it has more to do with the "living" things, like Belldandy where she is the "goddess" of nature, growth, fertility, and production.

Anybody else please feel free to correct me here.

Consider yourself corrected. You were doing all right until the end there.

Basically kami (the k changes to a g when combined) is to the best of my knowledge is gender neutral or both the masculine and gender neutral forms. (Similarly kyoudai (sp?) can refer to all male siblings or a mixture of male and female siblings while shimai refers strictly to groups of all female siblings).

Where you screwed up is trying to conflate megami to strict province. For one thing Belldandy is Goddess of the Present and her elemental association is air. If anyone has nature and fertility associations in that series is Peorth with her rose motif and elemental affinity being earth. Yet all four of them, Belldandy, Urd, Skuld and Peorth are called megami.

There are more examples from the Shinto pantheon as well, starting with (sometimes) Ametarasu-omikami, sun goddess and Empress of the Heavens, Benten or Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods and goddess of the performing arts and Kanon goddess of mercy just to name a few.

Finally to answer the initial question female shinigami like Rem would be covered under the term in it's gender neutral function.

Sure there is such thing as a Shimigami.
As there are such things as the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny and Santa Claus.
