Just got my limited edition of volume 9 (they happened to put it out on shelves while I was at JB Very Happy) I open up the figure box, expecting to see Near or perhaps the Shinigami King... WTF is this ball thing? Is it suppose to be the Shinigami realm or something? Neutral

Oh wow I completely forgot this was coming out.

Hoorah for a ball? Seems a bit odd though, in a sense I would have preferred Near over Sidoh, but the Sidoh figure does look pretty damn cool.

What the..? Really? I thought the Shinigami King was the guy with gems all over his face. Neutral It certainly does seem weird to exclude Near considering how much of an important role he played at the end of the series.

About your plans for Near... Will this be a cheap-style figure like the ones included with the DVDs, or will this be a normal figure? i.e would said Near figure be of a similar scale and quality as the limited edition figures?

I have a feeling that Near would be released with a complete collection. I'd be happy to be wrong though.

Not so much that I wanted it, more that I expected it would be Near.

That was exactly what I thought as soon as I saw Sly's comment too.

Also, this is exactly as I suggested in my thread (Death Note TV Specials) back in November.

If it is the case, I would like to think Sly & Madman decided on this based on my suggestion.. hehehe Cool Cool

Its good to know we will be getting the figurine/s in any case.

My volume 9 turned up at work this morning which was quite surprising. When I opened it up to check out the secret figure which I thought would be near I came across two halves of a ball and didn't quite know what to think. The USA got Near with their final volume didn't they, so what on earth is up with that?

Sure Sly says they have plans for Near but if that plan is to release it with our Death Note Re-Light if that is the announcement then I am going to be both disappointed and propably quite peeved actually. I don't want to buy some re-hashed clip show just to get the figurine we should've got... If that's the plan then they should've gave us Near with volume 9 and the Shinigami King (who I would gladly miss since it doesn't look that great) for Re-Light.

I don't think there is a "should have got" thing anywhere with it... the R1 or R2 (i think) had another 3 or so figures they could have chosen from and to give us the same figure as the US wouldn't have been a surprise.

The fact that MM is even giving us Near with Re-Light is another surprise in itself, especially considering it technically isn't PART of the Death Note box set they released... if there was a slot for the movie, sure it would be expected, but this is awesome.

It's not all just old clips, it has some new footage, and it's told through the perspective of Ryuk, it's simply a new experience. Not only that, I may too have been disappointed with the figure in Volume 9, but the news of us still getting Near is good news to me.

And in terms of "the figurine we should've got", technically it's not something we should have got, I mean, no where did it say Near would be in Volume 9, it was just expected. Madman don't always have to follow the US release style of things, the way I look at all this is we have a figure the US don't, and we will still get Near, whether it be in Re-Light or something else.

I guess this shows the business side of Madman...

To increase sales of the movie bundle it with the more popular Near figurine... smart idea ahahahah

So if they release Re-Light with the Near figure, this would open the possibility of releasing the Re-Light:2 movie with either Mikami Teru, Soichiro Yagami or Kiyomi Takada figurines with that...

Personally i would prefer the Mikami one...

Well you know why it was secret, because almost no one would have bought it if they had known. I am that unhappy I seriously want my money back. I don't care if they have plans for Near or not. The figures were pretty cool until this one. Someone is seriously laughing with my money in their account. I would have bought the regular version had I known.

Here's the gods honest truth.

We had originally thought it was strange that Near was not included in the US releases, they originally had the King of Death Gods at the last volume release as well. For some strange reason this changed to Near, and we just weren't told and it was just too late to do anything about it as we already had these King of Death Gods on order. In Japan, this secret figure was also labeled as secret The KODG is a character that has never been seen in the anime, nor the manga, making it quite exclusive.

Btw I cannot confirm if we are doing re:light or not, and whether or not Near will be included in it or not at this stage, but we're doing everything we can. Stay tuned.

Animefreak.97: That is what the Orb looks like.

Bleh!

I'm not going to trash anyone. But I'm just saying this orb however exclusive it is, is a pretty poor thing. As I said, overall the quality of the figures has been quite good. But I can't express my disappointment enough with this particular figure.

Anyhow, I'll shut up now as I've vented and what's done is done.

Really? Here I like the figure. It was a bit different to what I expected it to look like, but it's still pretty damn cool. As it is, the Shinigami figures look far superior to human ones.

Missing the Near figure isn't much of a problem for me, especially if there are plans for it to show up eventually.

Animefreak: The Re-Light movies are basically recaps of the entire series however in a Ryuk perspective. Barely any new footage and they dont really add much to the whole Death Note experience, so i've read...

This is the King of Shinigami figurine!!!

So it really is just a rehash pretty much no matter which way you look at it. The question then becomes just how much new footage and does it even make it worth watching for that... And considering an anime series turning one episode into a recap episode for part of the series being long enough I don't think I'd be able to stand it for like a two hour showing.

And so we have a logical explanation now of how after having followed the US releases we finally don't right at the end. Seems that there wasn't much you could do then at that point so we'll just go with blaming the Americans. Actually, don't we already blame the Americans for everything else so what's one more?

I have found one good thing about getting the King of Shinigami figure though. It creeps people out at my work since I have it sitting on my desk and they have no bloody idea what the hell it is.

He apparently appears in one panel of a one-shot that was created a while after the series ended. He was shown to be the giant ball thing, but being supported by chains, and the grey lines you see on the figure appeared to also be used as arms.

Canít help but feel a bit jipped, evil pot heads who thought it would good to send this fig out with that dvd.
Almost as bad as making those 2 other death gods into figs, I would off released a char who stared more than once or 2ce, but thatís just me

Just by looking at my Deathnote volume 9 figurine i instantly get a migraine or feeel sick to the stomach.

Im guessing its cursed......*jokes*

But anyways i recommend anyone thinking of getting the figure+dvd to think twice about it. Save $12 or spend it on a worthless, ugly looking figure.

It doesnt even resemble nor does it say Death Note on it. I would probably would prefer a magnet that Said death note than this. :/

I'm aware of that, my point was that it would have made more sense to have Near, who is a far more prominent character than Sidoh, as one of the figures.

Alright, got maself a Near figure. I'd say he's the best human figure after Mello. And it goes without saying that he's infinitely better than the ugly ass ball that has absolutely nothing to do with the show and MM didnít feel the need to announce until we had already bought and opened it, so there was absolutely no way to avoid said ugly ass ball.

And I'm definitely going to be importing the majority of my anime from now on. Though I feel sorry for the children, mostly. As in, the children of the MM staff. If this is their idea of a wicked cool 'surprise' I hate to think how many Christmas mornings they have ruined for their offspring.

'Yeah son, I took a dump in a box and wrapped it for ya. Don't enjoy it too much, though!'

You know that is kind of uncalled for. They thought that they were doing the same as the US, but they changed last minute, and madman couldn't. So get over it.

Wait, why is blindly following the US in a horribly awful decision such a rock solid defence in the first place? But okay, okay, lets assume it is. And lets also assume that even though the US release came months before ours, for some business reason Iím too much of a rube to understand, MM were stuck with this putrid ball for their release that came months later. Doesn't explain why they kept the ugly ass ball a secret until it was too late for all of us. Surely they could have told us what weíd be in for? But they didnít. Which, if you want to waste your time by reading on...

Nah homey, the ridiculously pathetic ball that no one could even discern what it was until specifically told by the distributors is secondary at this point, it's the principle of the thing. MM knew peeps were gonna think this was Near. I mean, it was the only logical conclusion to come to. And they knew peeps would spend their money on this abortion under that pretence, which is likely why they made it a secret. Now they jump out and say we're gonna have to spend more money to get Near after fifteen months of collecting this series. Just reeks of customer loyalty abuse. And thatís why my MM purchasing will take a dive. But if you guys are into that kinky stuff, I'm sure MM wonít care about one disgruntled customer. Nor should they, Iíll add. But that doesnít mean I canít voice my opinion.

You are free to voice you're opinion, but to imply that Madman deliberately did this to spite people is just illogical.
Madman didn't get to where they are today by deliberately screwing over customers.
What I also find interesting is that you talk about customer loyalty and then say you're going to import. You do realise companies like Bandai and Media Blasters have been constantly cancelling and delaying R1 releases with about a weeks notice? And yet the worst Madman has done is apparently mislead you on a $10 figure?
I would have also preferred Near as well, but the song and dance some people are making in this thread just reeks of spoilt children not getting what they want, rather than people Madman should actually bother listening to.

Hi everyone,

Just to address things again here's the true story.

1. The original release had slated that Near was not part of the US release schedule, it was to be the King of Death Gods (KODG). This in turn meant that Near was essentially UNAVAILABLE to us.

2. The Japanese release had KODG as a secret figure, it was a nice concept and we ran with it. It's mystery character that doesn't actually appear in the anime or manga, but is talked about quite alot. If given the choice to drop one of the other characters to have both KODG and Near, we definitely would have done it. But it wasn't to be.

3. When we found out about Near in V9 of the US release, we too were quite perplexed, little annoyed too at the fact that this was kept a secret from us. By this stage, we had already:

a) solicited the secret figure
b) stock of the KODG figure had already arrived
c) Way too late to be able to order the Near figures.

So as you can see not a whole lot we can do about it. There might be an opportunity in the future to release the figure but I cannot confirm that it will be 100% the case at this point in time.

So there it is in plain truth. We are fans of the series too don't ever forget this, so annoyed I am, but I am also reason able enough to be able to see that we've done the best we can and also offer something that only we and Japan got, which you have to admit is still quite a wonderful feat.

If you don't like this explanation, I'm sorry, but this is the God's honest truth. We're trying to still do what we can to "correct" (and I'm using this term VERY losely) this mistake. If that's enough reason for you to swtich to other releases...well that's your choice but end of the day know that we here at Madman are still fans of the shows we release and ALWAYS have the buying public's interest at heart.

Thanks again, it is sad though that you have to explain it twice for some people to understand.

Hey I'm as disappointed as the next guy, but the explanation was quite reasonable. It's just a shame that they came in that "secret" box, otherwise I could have saved myself some coin. But hey, what can you do?

Sorry you have to keep repeating yourself Sly.
