I know shoot me now, but I have never bothered to watch a Gundam show nor bothered to look up what the whole deal is about, until today. The reason why I have never bothered to learn about the franchise is because of the multiple series it has. I mean I am now seeing Madman has aqcuired 00 and 0083, and I know they already have Gundam Seed and Gundam Destiny.

What is the deal with all the different series? Do they all link? Or is each a separate series in it's own right? Is there any point in me watching 00 online now Madman have it on their?

I guess what I am trying to find out here is do I need to watch one series to understand the other?

And yes I did Google it but served no justice to me. Thanks in advance.

There are alot of alternate realities.
Let me put it in to something.

Universal Century
Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam (ZZ stands for 'double Zeta')
Char's Counterattack (movie)
08th MS Team (OVA, set in the period of One Year War which is practically the time frame Mobile Suit Gundam takes place)
Gundam 080 War in the Pocket (takes place in UC 80, another OVA)
Gundam 083 Stardust Memory (OVA, occurs after Mobile Suit Gundam 3 years afterwards)
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (still in UC but in the distant future)

After that there was one final UC Gundam thing which was Gundam F91 happens in a similar time frame to Victory Gundam.

After those G Gundam was the first alternate reality, they probably did this because there are only so many times you could add new stories to UC before details get messed up with the other stories.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam occurs in FC(Future Century)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing was next, which was in AC(After Colonoy reality)
This also includes the sequel OVA Gundam Wing Endless Waltz.

After Gundam Wing, there was After War Gundam X set in AW(After War reality)
Then there was Turn A Gundam, set in Correct Century.

Then we have Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny which were set in CE(Cosmic Era) and this also includes the retelling of the last 2 episodes of SEED Destiny, Final Plus which was improved over the original versions.
There was a side spin off, Gundam SEED CE 73 Stargazer, a side story OVA.
Then apart from that, Gundam 00 (Double "Oh") which has 2 seasons is pretty much it so far for the main Gundam series stuff.
Gundam 00 is set in Anno Domin or AD calendar which is based off the real human calendar but unfortunately Gundams themselves aren't real any time soon Razz

Hopefully that covered everything.
So if you want to break it down by time lines.

There is UC, FC, AC, AW, CC, CE and AD being the main realities thus far.
Not all of the series have been translated or released also for that matter.

Do they all follow a sequence? Like they may have different timelines, but they aren't all interrelated are they? Can I pick up and watch 00 without worrying about watching a previous series.

Yes. Each time line is fully independent of the others. Though there are a lot of hints that Turn A is actually the very, very distant future of the UC timeline.

There both a bit distant from the original Gundam in the timeline, granted but there's nearly thirty years seperating the series (in universe). F91 is set in UC 123 and Victory is UC 153. (And for the record, F91 was made before Victory and 0083).

Apparently there's also supposed to be a new UC OAV coming next year, adapating the Unicorn Gundam Light Novels.

Well by seqeunce you can look at it in 2 ways.
Date they were aired
Or chronologically (which works best for UC series to make more sense)

And F91 comes before Victory both ways.

You're original language implies that F91 was the most recent UC Gundam production.

Don't forget MS Igloo Wink

The answer is of course not. You don't have to have seen one to get the other. They are written in a way that they will appeal to new viewers. Particularly with 00.

Not even UC Gundam or Seed and Seed Destiny have pre requisite viewing, you can watch them. They do make slightly more sense if you've seen the predecessor series but it's not absolutely necessary.

I would encourage you to check it out, it is IMO one of the best Gundam series to date.

Much faster paced than any of the previous releases
Great character deveopment
Very little angsty teen shenanigans
Great political commentary
Beautifully animated
Interesting mech designs
Nods to UC series for the Gun-Ota's
Well written without being confusingly complex

The first couple of eps of 00 didn't really hook me at first but it really grabs you later and season two keeps you there till the final ep or at least that was how it was for me.

Well SEED took about near episode 5 or so to get a pace going, I'm going to give it a little more time.

Are you kidding? If anything, it lags in the middle, not the beginning. Confused

No let me clarify more what I meant.
I meant more of a pace as in the general storyline, the first 2 episodes focused on the attack on Heliopolis and other things at the time, episode 3 was the escape and 4 was when they docked at Artemis Base and then after that they knew they had to head to Earth and Kira was sort of settling in to his role among other things.
Not saying the very first episodes were dull also, I found the fighting inside the colony rather chaotic and fun to watch.

Yeah ok, but think of it more like an extended introduction... you can't just start with a storyline of this huge attack and then instantly switch over to a more general, series encompassing one, without at least exploring the attack/escape in a little detail... it would have been a complete cop out to have them straight away go, 'right, off to earth now', the minute they left Heliopolis.

Yeah I know, I mean they had water problems and went to the debris belt to get frozen ice for their water supplies and that sort of thing.
SEED did aspects of the story where it gave reasons for the way things went in some episodes.
I didn't mind the way it was done, 00 just needs a little bit of time to find it's feet so, I'm willing to wait a little first.

SEED Destiny had a great pace from episode 1, it's just the later half got kind of screwed around with.
(With Kira and co, coming back and interfering in battles when telling Alliance and ZAFT sides to "stop fighting" while Kira was attacking the sides in his Freedom)
But that has been discussed before anyway.

I'll probably get a better opinion by the first 5 episodes.

Besides if don't like Gundam 00, maybe wait for 083 and 08th MS team to come out and you might like those better.

Is anyone having problems watching episode 6 via the Screening Room today?
I buffered it completely prior to watching but when it gets to around 11:27 it just stops and goes back to the start.
(I'll try again with a different browser and see if that makes a difference)

Redid the whole buffering thing using Firefox this time round and when watching it after that, it stops at the same point (11:27) and goes back to the start.
Any ideas?

Don't think I'd go so far as to call them lazy, probably are just unaware of the problem. I have emailed the webmaster and given details so hopefully it will be sorted out soon.

And I haven't seen any new anime snacktime epsiodes since the end of June episode.Razz

That FMA episode got fixed within a couple of hours and on the MM twiiter page they mentioned they were recording Snacktime just the other day (a double ep I think it said)
Anyway, within 15 minutes of me sending an email to the webmaster he had emailed me back and had fixed the problems with episode 6 of Gundam 00 (as I suggested before, they just weren't aware of the problem) so I just finished watching it then as it is all good to go.

This is the first time I've ever watched any Gundam series although I already own the MM releases of Seed, Wing and Destiny etc ( in my backlog still though Embarassed ) and I'm also collecting 00 as they are released and the other Gundam titles that MM have recently acquired.
I haven't missed an episode of 00 thus far via the SR+ and am finding it pretty awesome, so if this is considered to be not as 'epic' as other Gundam series I am wrapt that I still have more to watch after this series. Personally I think 00 has been a great way for me to get introduced to the Gundam universe.

Can anyone say what is happening with Gundam 00 in the Screening Room? I watched the first 25 weeks which I understand is the first of two seasons. Will episodes 26 and onwards be going up on a weekly basis as well? And if there is a break between seasons, roughly how long will it be? Thanks in advance.

I asked the webmaster at Madman as episode 26 didn't appear this Monday and he didn't know what was happening in regards to the rest of the 00 episodes so hopefully someone from MM sees this and can answer this query.
