Well, "Funimation will license Kai" is no surprise, however "Funimation have licensed Kai" is newsworthy. Razz

Also, Walmart listings seem to indicate a R1 release as soon as May. Sticking the "Z" in the title is a little odd, but it makes good business sense. I really hope they adjust the logo a bit before release though so the Z doesn't look as out of place as it does now.

Well Kai means refreshed, so I can see why they'd be putting Z on the logo. That way people won't aggressive go-getter that they were meant to be getting something new, or wondering why it doesn't start with Dragon Ball.

More info.

Seems they've been dubbing the show since late last year, and for the most part the show will have the same voice cast as the current DBZ dub, but with more care to the script, by which I assume we'll be getting a rather accurate script this time as opposed to the wild fluctuations from decent to... bizarre and horrible.

Well, you know what they say... Dragon Ball... Cash cow... Keep milking? I'm pretty sure this is the fourth time we've gotten Raditz in the past five years. Not that I'm complaining. Well... other than about the "remastering" done to the season sets, but hey.

Dragon Ball Kai is Dragon Ball Z remastered and refreshed. It has new music, alot of the sbhit cut out, a newly animated open, and some redrawn scenes. Episode 42 just aired in Japan, and Vegeta has been killed by Freeza and just started/about to fight Goku.

If you want Dragon Ball Z, get the Dragon Boxes. If you want something xloser to the manga and a lot faster paced, get Kai.

To elaborate on Kai's pacing a bit more after what Gouki has already said, in Dragon Ball Z the Saiyan arc ends with episode 35, while in Dragon Ball ("Z") Kai the Saiyan arc is already over by episode 17.

so do they leave out certain episodes? or redraw it to sit better with the manga?

They leave out all the filler episodes. For example, all that stuff goku does on snake way - does not happen in the manga, he goes straight to King Kai's. So when they take out all those episodes, it adds up.

ahhhhhhh i see, next question is about the quality of the picture, i saw a comparison between all the versions to date, and i think kai and the dragon boxes were right at the end and you could really see much difference dew to the lack of stuff in the picture. so which has a better quality image?

Kai is both Blu-Ray and DVD in Japan (with the Blu-Ray being fullscreen, and the DVD being cropped widescreen, if I recall. The DragonBox is DVD only in both America and Japan, as far as I know.

Recasts!

Bulma: Monica Rial
Gohan: Colleen Clinkenbeard
Puar and Chaozu: Brina Palencia
Narrator: Doc Morgan

Brina as Puar and Chaozu comes as no surprise, considering that she's been playing them in the video games for years now.

Same thing for Gohan.

Kind of odd they decided to recast.

Oh, yeah, I know. They should have kept Maggie Blue O'Hara for Bulma or Saffron Henderson for Gohan.

Right.

Personally, I always found Tiffany Vollmer to be one of the weaker members of the cast (And on top of that, I'm pretty sure Bulma was pretty much her only role in anything, ever.), so I'm perfectly fine with hearing that she's been replaced with someone like Monica Rial, who has been pretty fantastic in all her work I've heard.

As for Stephanie Nadolny as Gohan... I was somewhat fond of her performance, mostly for the Android/Cell arc, but... When I watch those early Saiyan arc episodes, all I can think is "Four-year-olds do not sound like that.", hopefully Colleen Clinkenbeard can do something a little more childlike for him. I'm quite fond of her Luffy voice in One Piece, which while not quite right for Gohan at this early stage, I could see something in that general vein working.

Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo are staying, Cell however... I don't think it's likely we'll see Dameon Clarke back as Cell. He's the only cast member of Fullmetal Alchemist not reprising his role (Scar) in Brotherhood. (Well, except for Aaron Dismuke as Al, but his recast had more to do with hitting puberty.)

Apparently in his most recent video game appearance, Cell was played by Travis "Colonel Mustang" Willingham.

Funimation's own announcement of the Kai cast.

Nothing we didn't already know, the same recasts listed earlier are mentioned, a number of returns are confirmed. (Goku, Piccolo, Vegeta, Raditz, Roshi, Tien, Ox King, Chichi, Nappa, Freeza, Krillin and Bardock are all the same as before.)

I wonder if the exclusion of Schemmel being King Kai and Sabat being Yamcha in this listing indicates anything about whether they're returning to those roles? Especially since they're both much more prominent than some of the other characters listed.

Kyle Hebert is confirmed as Ox King. Razz Changing the narrator likely has more to do with it being what they do with every DB series. While Kyle was the DBZ narrator, Dragon Ball was narrated by Brice Armstrong and GT was narrated by Andy Chandler. It makes sense for Z Kai to have a new narrator. (Despite the fact that DB, DBZ, DBGT and DB Kai all have Jouji Yanami as the narrator in Japanese.)

From Chris Sabat's Facebook:

"Yes, there were some casting changes. And there were good reasons for all of them. I really can't go into it, but trust me the reasons are totally valid. But you have nothing to worry about. The new Narrator is awesome. Monica sounds JUST like Tiffany's Bulma, only better! Colleen is a very age-appropriate Gohan and brings a new quality of acting that you haven't experienced before. The scripts are totally true to the REAL story of DBZ. The new music and SFX are great. The editing of Kai is SO MUCH TIGHTER and more exciting than the original Z. You are going to LOVE this new version. A lot of hard work has gone into this new version and I'm sure that once you see how much better EVERYTHING is about this version you'll completely forget about all these little things that worry you know. Just wait..."

Also, if you would like to hear a little of what Kyle Hebert has to say... (He doesn't really have anything to add other than "I would have liked to be the narrator, but I'm not the narrator, but the new narrator is pretty cool and I'm still Ox King".)

Honestly, im gonna skip the dragon box and just get kai. Though I do wonder how toei is going to try and continue to milk the Dragonball Z cash cow once kai and dragonbox are fully released (the whole reason they made funimation release the remastered sets first).

Honestly, Kai is a pretty heavy milking as it is. Recycling 20 year old footage to make a new compressed version of the series? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's still what Kai effectively is for the most part.

The season sets were done entirely of Funimation's own volition, they had released the entire series (except a few Saiyan/Namek episodes) and decided to bring out nice cheap season sets which they went to the effort of remastering and creating a new dub w/ Japanese music track for. ... Unfortunately, they didn't think things through and cropped the damn thing into widescreen. (Hey, that's what the cool kids like these days, right!? We're still cool! ... You don't like it? ... Crap.)

Toei had absolutely nothing to do with that release though. In fact, they don't have much to do with any Funimation release other than providing them the raw materials that are licensed. They released their Dragon Boxes in Japan back in 2003, about 8 years after the show had ended. Funi just happened to manage licensing those masters last year so that they could release the most definitive version after the mistake of their own remastered sets.

As for milking Dragon Ball... Toei's a pretty big company, it's not like Dragon Ball is their bread and butter, I believe One Piece is the big thing in Japan these days. (Which Kai takes advantage of by airing just before One Piece each week and obtaining quite impressive ratings.)

Sorry Mad Anime Fan, but I haven't played the most recent games. Haven't upgraded from the PS2 yet. Razz

More comments on Chris Sabat's Facebook announcement:

Colleen Clinkenbeard wrote:
Hey, guys! Had to throw a quick word in here, even though I just posted about it extensively on my page. I am so thrilled to get to be a part of the DBZ universe this time around! I hope I do it justice and I can promise to put everything I have into it (including most of the inside of my throat). For those of you who were fans of the original Japanese cast, we are trying to stay closer to the original youth of Gohan for the beginning of the show and let him grow vocally as he does in the animation. Chris is a phenomenal director and is so dedicated to making this series everything it can be. I think the result will be a fun new take on the character and the show in general and hope you'll give me a chance to be a part of the DB joy with you. Smile

Sean Schemmel wrote:
Here's what you guys don't know, but need to. Chris Sabat has gone far beyond the call of duty behind the scenes to make this version happen in an amazing way that it did not before. He has donated much of his personal time and energy into this, and has been extraordinarily picky with the direction, as well as double checking japanese meaning against the adaptation for accuracy as well as entertainment value. If it were not for him personally, I would probably not be able to be a part of it. On a technical note, sound quality will be unmatched to the previous due to the amazing and highest quality gear available at Okratron as well as Rawly Pickens golden ears checking every single line for audio quality. It's the way it should have been done to begin with, but that's 20/20 hindsight. I am thrilled about the new cast, and no offense to my awesome castmates, but my new favorite voice for DBZ Kai is the Narrator. You're going to love it. Also, I am still awesome.

Chris Sabat wrote:
Hey Sean! Glad you popped in and thanks for the vote of confidence.

This version of DBZ means a lot to me. It's extremely rare that you get a chance to do something you did 10 YEARS ago all over again. And I'm not wasting the chance. We're fixing things that were wrong with the first version and trying to make it better, which is why you'll... See More see some changes. But we don't want to make Kai so radically different that doesn't feel like DBZ anymore, so they may be some things that we don't change that you wish we would. But I honestly believe you're going to find DBZ Kai to be a totally mature version of a show, a version that grew up over the last 10 years and has come home stronger, well trained and a hell of a lot cooler.

I'd also post whatever Colleen has on her own page, but I can't access it without signing up for Facebook and yeah. Razz

I haven't upgraded from PS2 either, so that is fair enough Razz

Admittingly for Collen's sake talking Monica, you know a bunch of fans may not quite hear it that way, but who knows.

As Colleen kind of curious to see what she does, was Stephany Nandoly asked if she wanted to do Gohan?

You do remember they had to edit down DBZ back in the day, doubt they would do it again for DBZ Kai.

Cheez Tv had to play the edited version of DBZ. That is what Mad Anime Fan means.
