Hi,

Just showed a friend Madoka which we both loved. She's interested in seeing some more mahou shoujo stuff to get a better grasp on the genre as a whole -- is there much good stuff along those lines easily available here right now?

I'm assuming Card Captor Sakura is a safe bet, but is there anything out here at the moment that more closely fits a Madoka/Sailor Moon team sort of thing? [Edit: and is also very good Smile ]

Thanks.

Princess Tutu. It sounds lame but is actually very excellent.

Is Pretear still available? Also recently released, Cardcaptor Sakura.

Hmm, would The World That God Only Knows be classified, however loosely, as magical girl?

Some stuff from the current-release catalogue that hasn't been mentioned...

+ Arjuna, which has an outstanding soundtrack and visual design and a flawed plot
+ Mai-Hime, which ticks all the boxes of magical-girlhood and then ticks a few extra ones that make the show-as-a-whole deeply skeevy in a fairly uninteresting way. Also it's terribly written.
+ Figure Seventeen, which is an odd show that rewards watching.

Not usefully. In general a magical-girl show:
+ has a lead character [or sometimes multiples] who is, you know, a girl, and who
+ has powers that are in-setting unique or nearly so.

There's a whole swathe of shows that fails the first point by having as the lead the magical-girl's dweebish boyfriend or boyfriend-wannabe, like the one you mentioned, but also Tsukihime, Shikabane-hime, [most famously] Oh My Goddess, &c.

[failing the second point gets you "fantasy"; see Magic Knight Rayearth here.]

Interestingly enough, while The World God Only Knows doesn't count (it flirts with the Magical Girlfriend genre, never quite fully committing but never quite leaving it behind), the Substitute Shinigami arc (aka the First Arc) of Bleach has been accused of being a gender-flipped magical girl series. Just for that arc but it does work fairly well.

Well My-HiME is one of my favourites of the bunch (locally or internationally).
It also has the spinoffsequalalternateuniversecompletewtf series My-Otome which I could barely sit through, though it would have been better if they didn't do the whole "Alternate Universe" rubbish where all the characters were something different to the audience. :T

And the second half of the sailor moon manga starts to resemble nothing so much as a less-queer Saint Seiya.
