Recently I've been finding it difficult to find Anime with a deep, thought provoking and mature with an intricate plot. Any recommendations?

So far I've watched the following with great pleasure:

- Monster by Naoki Urasawa
- Kino's Journey
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Welcome to the NHK
- Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
- Perfect Blue
- Paprika
- Now and then Here and there
- Boogiepop Phantom
- Paranoia Agent
- Eden of the East
- Tokyo Godfathers

Thanks for the suggestion!

Too bad I already saw this when I was 6 years old when it aired on SBS.

Utena. Seriously, why is this even a question?

[also, and perhaps surprisingly, princess tutu.]

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have to say no to both as I'm not a big fan of ballet/romance anime.

I would also like to add that I'm looking for shows where the main characters are at least 20 years old.

OK, since you have a lot of Satoshi Kon there, why not watch Millenium Actress?

I might try to find Boogiepop Phantom myself since Yuki Kajiura composed the music for it.

Project ARMS

Rahxephon - including movie

Wolf's Rain

Witch Hunter Robin

Millenium Actress

Freedom

Gasaraki

Kaze no Yojimbo

Zegapain

Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit

Then your doing yourself a grave disservice, on both counts. Romance may be a part of Utena but it is not all and as for Princess Tutu, the ballet motif is simply a vehicle for a more complex story.

You should probably watch it again, Evangelion deserves a second watch especially if you only saw it when you were eight. Watching it at that age you wouldn't have understood half of what was actually going on anyway.
