I skimmed over quickly and noticed some of the titles I'd dare list as "must-see" so I'll pop them here to see if it helps you pick anything to start tonight.

Fate Zero
Ga Rei Zero
Jin-Roh
When They Cry
Baccano
Canaan
Utena
(Seriously, don't not watch Utena ever.)

Of the R1'a, I can definitely say Kurogane Communication and The Girl with the Blue Eye are to be watched early on.

Of the R4's, I recomend the following:

Baccano - Awesome, awesome dub and there's no main character. Ladd Ruso in ep 4 is a riot. Very Happy
Swort Art Online - I've rewatched this a good few times
X'amd - Awesome OP and ED and the series is good to watch. Got the ED album by Kylee Very Happy
Zaion - single disc and it's not that bad.
Sengoku Basara - A bloody riot. Prepare to laugh. Very Happy Very Happy
Outlaw Star - Older series, but a really good series.
Le Chevalier D'Eon - Didn't like the end, but otherwise fantastic. The OP is one of my faves.
Guyver - Only problem is that they didn't do a sequel.
Gundam Seed - It's still overall better than it's sequel due to NOT having Shin.
Argentosoma - Could be better, protagonist side, but suprisingly good otherwise.
Fushigi Yugi - I have the R1's and it's up there as one of the most collectable titles.
Ergo Proxy - The OP is really good and the series gets better as it goes along. Artist - Monoral - Song - Kiri
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 - an older title, but one rated as a classic.
Gunslinger Girl - The first season has better animation and storyline. The sequel ain't bad either.
Ghost in the Shell - A classic movie that spawned numerous sequels and tv series. Stand Alone Complex and Second Gig are worthy to carry its name

Hope that helps

I mainly got Utena because I liked the look of the R1 boxset. So will put it very low on the watch priority.

Jester you mentioned my brother and my sisters favourite series on your list. They have both been telling me to watch those shows for a while. Brothers is Baccano sisters is Fushigi Yugi.

Thanks Sylontack and Jester both lists definitely help with where to start.

No, I used a double negative. DEFINITELY watch Utena. It's fantastic! I'm a massive fan of the director (who also was responsible for Mawaru Penguindrum. If you've seen that one you'll have an idea of what you're getting into).

Reading that list reminded me of my own back-log, not to mention having heard some of the songs live.

From Up on Poppy Hill and Porco Rosso are good for if you are with friends and they want to watch a movie.

I'd also recommend Chrono Crusade, although my bias is from having exposure to the music:

OP Tsubasa wa Pleasure Line by Minami Kuribayashi:

ED Sayonara Solitia by Yuki Kajiura (not original vocalist in this clip):
