AKA "I Need A Lame Excuse To Rant About The New DJ Shadow Album Because It's Bloody Fantastic."

Seeing as how there's been the odd attempt at a thread on bands that aren't Japanese and/or anime related, I thought I'd start a thread on them to save me filling up this forum with locked threads.

I've always been into music from all around the world, and my CD collection is almost as broad as my anime DVD collection. I mean who else here can claim to own every R.E.M. album ever made, and 'We Are Shampoo'?

So, what non-anime music do you guys listen to? What was the last non-anime/JPop album you bought? Who are your favourite non-anime/JPop bands/artists?

As previously mentioned, I listen to all sorts of stuff. The last non-anime/JPop album I bought was DJ Shadow's 'The Private Press'.

My favourite non-anime/JPop bands/artists are R.E.M., DJ Shadow, Massive Attack, Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, The Dirty Three, Nine Inch Nails and Autechre. I like many others, but those are the main ones.

Anyway, to rant about the new DJ Shadow album...

Well, for those who don't know, I regard Mr. Shadow's 'Endtroducing...' as the best album of all time simply because I listen to it more than any other album in my collection. So waiting 6 years for a follow up was kind of like SSJ Matty waiting 6 months for a local release of Excel Saga. Fortunately, 'The Private Press' delivers on all the promises made on Endtroducing. It's a fantastic album, with Shadow's individual style coming through. For some reason, I find this album to be a lot darker and than Endtroducing, which is a dark album of itself. Both albums contain beautiful haunting pieces, coupled with frenetic drum sessions and funky rhythms. I can understand why Private Press is darker too-- DJ Shadow tends to be somewhat political (remember the 'Why Hip-Hop Sucks In '96' controversy?), and things such as the attack on personal freedom by the RIAA/MPAA/US Government hit home for him.

The album contains two songs that really stand out. 'You Can't Go Home From Here' is one of those songs that leaves you breathless by the end. It builds into some kind of tribute to the 1980s guitar/synth combination, but without the shocking hairdos. Amazing.

The other song is Six Days, which is as close to a vocal track as this album gets. Shadow reworks a song about the Six Day War into a song about the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. Easily the most powerful song on this subject I've ever heard (and that includes Ayu's 'A Song Is Born').

That's my mini-review out of the way. DJ Shadow is one of three people on this planet that I class as a musical genius (the others are Richard D. James and Yoko Kanno), and it's good to see that the genius is in top form. I can't overstate how much you need this album, or it's predecessor.

Did I mention that every sound, every beat, every transient noise on both DJ Shadow albums are samples? There is not a single live musical instrument, synth or drum machine anywhere on them. Guaranteed 100% sampled.

Oh, and please, no flaming people who like music you don't. If I can refrain from hating people who like Korn and Limp Biscuit, so can you.

Hmm, well said. Although a little bit peeved at the generalisation of your last statement, I can understand where you're coming from. I am one of the people who's the first to embrace any type of music, but on the other end I suppose I am a bit quick to trash music I don't like. Personally, I like Korn but dislike Limp Biskit, not because everybody does or it's the in thing, but for them turning their backs on Korn. I still like one or two songs, but just don't like the band. That's me, sorry.

ANYWAY, before I get too much into it, I like Korn because of the haunting rage and terrible sadness, especially behind 'Issues'. The new album, 'Untouchables' still has rage in it, but I'm noticing a lack of Fieldy's bass. This one I think is too guitary.

My favourite at the moment has to be smooth guitar's and flowing, euphoric vocals - Deftones 'White Pony' comes to mind, and a lot of Tool's work serves me nicely also. Tool is my pick of the bunch, seriously - they have not put a foot wrong yet, from the powerful wrenching 'The Grudge' to the vengeful and and hate filled 'Tick'; 'Laterlus' is my golden album - filled with great respect for Maynard and the gang.

As mentioned before, I appreciate haunting melodies, and the Silent Hill soundtracks deserve a mention.
Sauceman, great review, and I think I will hunt down and check out DJ Shadow.

Enough from me.

The non-Anime/J-pop disc thats getting the most playtime here is probably Dido's No Angel. She has simply the most amazing voice I have ever heard.

Would I have to post anything about Game music in here? I was just wondering because it is Japanese, and lot's of games have J-Pop in them.

I'm listening to Tenacious D as I type... "We'll lead as two kings..." Sydney show at the Metro is sold out! good thing my contact in Sydney obtained a ticket for me...
The YRD's CD collection encompases all that is deemed 'FUNKY AS ALL HELL'... this goes from such greats as Strapping Young Lad (go Devy!) to Shonen Knife...
But if you wish to know the true nature of YRD, you can't go too far wrong by calling me a metalhead...

No. Same applies to CPop and KPop. (Damn am I loving BoA's new album.)

GM67: Shadow isn't Australian, he's from sunny California. And if you think Arrested Development are 'old school', then you need an education in hip-hop .

Did I mention I love dub? The *only* musical genre that can be listened to on a hot summer's day. Lee Perry, Mad Professor and Australia's own Sheriff Lindo are my favourites.

Well I'll state straight out that I do like Korn. I listen to almost anything thats out there (even some country), favourite band is the Foo Fighters which reflects that my favourite category would be rock/metal. Also, I still listen to a fair bit of dance/electronic music (after effects of my clubbing/raver days).

Last 3 CDs I bought were Korn, Silverchair and Chemical Brothers.

My favorite music that isn't Jpop/Anime related would be:

Tool, Fear Factory, Radiohead, Soulfly, Sepultura, Soundgarden, A Perfect Circle, Devin Townsend, Strapping Young Lad, Pantera, Down, Will Haven and stuff and that.

The last CDs I bought would have Been:
Tool: Opiate, Aenima & Lateralus
A Perfect Circle: Mer de Noms
Radiohead: Amnesiac
Devin Townsend: Physicist
(bought them all on the same day)

I listen mostly to bands like System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstein, The Living End, Superheist... Anyway i never really got into KoRn but that new song (here to Stay) is bl00dy fantastic! (IMHO). the last cd i bought would probably be RAtM ~ self titled ( i sorta bought them in backwards order). Havent heard them with their new singer, hope they just get better and better (but have a bad feeling that they'll flop). Hmm, in my winamp right now... ACDC - TNT, Ali G and Shaggy - Me Julie (when is the movie coming out?) and RAtM - Born of a Broken Man. Those were the last three songs that played anyway. The last one is my favourite ever song, basically for the guitar work, and the lyric, "Jesus stripped bare, and r@ped the spirit he was supposed to nurture..." Ah! I've been ranting for far to long so I'll leave this here, make of it what you will.

Hmm... Isn't the new singer for RAtM none other than Chris Cornell?

If it is, then there's no reason why it'll be a flop.

Ah, such a pity. Although he is far too good for them, so perhaps its for the best.

In other news, Rage had a British music special on Saturday night that was sort of like reliving my teenage years. I don't know why, but Britpop meant almost as much to me as electronic music once I got out of my Pearl Jam phase.

They played everything from Radiohead to Pulp to Oasis to Blur to The Verve to The Manic Street Preachers and every other good British band.

And damned if 'Common People' by Pulp isn't the anthem of a generation. Either that or 'Disco 2000'.

And the Manics are still the most completely underrated band, ever.

Shirley should never have cut her hair short and peroxided it. :P

'Shut Your Mouth' is the next single released from beautifulgarbage too.

I know. I was very disappointed with it. I haven't listened to that album in about 8 months. Shut Your Mouth was my favourite song from that album, but my CD was faulty on that particular track, and thus whenever you listen to it, how would I put it.. the audio shorts out a few times at the start of the song, and it makes it really painful to listen to, and the 'interactive' component of the CD will not install properly on ANY system I try it on. I tried to return it to the store the next day after purchase because it was faulty, but all their copies had the same problem, so their verdict was that 'it's supposed to be like that' (even though I've tried out my friend's copies of the CD, and they don't have that audio problem), thus they wouldn't replace it for me. Thus I am stuck with a faulty CD, and I don't like listening to it anymore because it just makes me more upset about it. >_<

In other news, 11 days until The Whitlams' new album is out. ^_^

Shin: I think the reason your CD is fauly is due to the fact you kept playing the CD over and over!

As for my list...hm...
Cornelius (Ok one of THE best Japanese artists that I have ever heard His music is so damn peaceful and happy ), Elliott Smith (Shin knows how much I love his music . "Everything reminds me of her..." ), At The Drive In, Foo Fighters would best my number 1 band, The Doors, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bjork, NOFX, The Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Gomez, Incubus(Their old albums) and a few others oldies...

XD I wish that was the case. :/ beautifulgarbage is perhaps one of my least played CDs, which is a shame since garbage is supposed to have been my favourite band for the past 6 years.

You know, I used to have the *exact same problem* with Garbage's first album.

Then I discovered that Supervixen was meant to sound like that.

It's the most common sentance in the song

"Everything Reminds Me Of Her" Elliott Smith

"I never really had a problem
Because of leaving
But everything reminds me of her
This evening
So If I seem a little out of it, sorry
But why should I lie?
Everything reminds me of her
The spin of the earth impaled a silhouette of the sun on the steeple and I gotta hear the same sermon all the time now from you people
Why are you staring into outer space crying
Just because you came across it and lost it?
Everything reminds me of her
Everything reminds me of her
Everything reminds me of her"

Well there you go Shin...I do know more then that line ..now you have the damn song in my head >_<

EDIT: ... damn spelling...

*lol* Nah, when I say the sound shorts out, it's doesn't stop like Supervixen does.. the closest thing I can compare it to is when you get a power surge and your speakers make a pop zap sound.. *sigh* I can't find the right words for it at the moment...

I actually compared the waveforms of Shut Your Mouth from my CD and a friend's CD:

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. The pic on the left is taken from my CD, the one on the right is from my friend's, notice how mine has a little bit extra in the waveform on the right part of the pic?

So true, although the RATM's albulm that is about to be released still has cornell on lead vocals according to triple j....

SOUNDGARDEN: the first band i ever got into, the first CD I ever bought (okay i am old, first cassette)...ah, that is if you dont inlcude terrible early 90's techno band the movement, which i have spent years in therapy trying to forget...

DJ SHADOW: Am i getting confused here, is Dj shadow the guy who did the brilliant High noon or the guy that teamed up with another guy and Tom Yorke and did the also brilliant Rabbit in your headlights - ant either way that wasn't six years ago was it?

That's the bloke. The album with Thom Yorke was a project he did with James Lavelle called U.N.K.L.E.

It's a criminally underrated album, and one of my favourites.

High Noon is indeed brilliant, but my favourite Shadow song ever is 'What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 3)'.

13 minutes of haunting brilliance.

Ah, I loved Soundgarden ^_^ As a matter of fact, I think I'll look for their song "Black Hole Sun" to download right now... My bro and sis had a large influence in what music I like today. Almost nothing from the last few years tickles my fancy, so I'm restrictd to the old music of Tool, Garbage, NIN, Faith No More and Nirvana. Although Rob Zombie (once belonging to White Zombie) isn't too bad.

*remembers Cyprass Hill* Hehe... How on earth did I ever listen to that? ^^;;;;

Some Cypress Hill stuff is okay...not something I'd listen to all day though.

My friend has me into soundtracks at the moment...the LOTR and Hannibal soundtracks are brilliant.

You know, I've come to the realisation that people who dislike Eminem are, in general, people who don't get the joke.

It was the same deal with Marilyn Manson. Those that disliked him, didn't get him.

Eminem is actually a pretty talented lyricist-- just have a listen to 'Without Me' to hear that (the Batman bit is fantastic), and he makes some very good points in his lyrics.

I just find it strange that *so many* people don't seem to get those points. Maybe I'm intelligent or something.

Of course, if you don't like Eminem because he's "not to your taste", that's fine too. You're welcome to. Just don't hate him without understanding him first.

(DISCLAIMER: I always liked the first song Eminem had, 'Hi My Name Is'. I found it funny that not even his own mother understood the joke. I do not, nor do I intend to, own an Eminem album.)

Interviewer: Good evening. I have with me in the studio tonight one of the country's leading skin specialists - Raymond Luxury Yacht.
Raymond: That's not my name.
Interviewer: I'm sorry - Raymond Luxury Yach-t.
Raymond: No, no, no - it's spelt Raymond Luxury Yach-t, but it's pronounced 'Throatwobbler Mangrove'.
Interviewer: You're a very silly man and I'm not going to interview you.

In some strange and weird way, Eminem's latest single reminds me of Weird Al Yankovic. XD

I'd like to give a big phat thank you to Tool for coming to Adelaide. IMHO, Tool are true artists. A big cheer to the barely noticed Blair on Tool's website for pumping out the weird ass and wonderful newsletters.
Okay I'm rambling again.
And Marilyn Manson was mentioned. He rocks. When's his next album dammit? I want more of the gothster.

Maybe I'm just not "getting him" but I find his stuff hilarious because it sounds like he's trying to say "I'm ****ed up and its everyones fault except my own." That, and the fact that after "The Real Slim Shady" noone was able to have an interview with Christina Aguilera without mention *that* line for ages. Although I have to thank Eminem for one thing: If it weren't for "Stan" I probably would never have heard of the sheer musical brilliance that is Dido.

Please, this is the sort of thing I didn't want to see in this thread.

Constructive discussion of music, not immature insults about an artist.

If this sort of thing keeps up, I will not hesitate to lock this thread. Just be happy you even have a place to discuss non-anime/jpop artists here.

Remember, the very existence of this thread is against my better judgement, I just wanted a super-thread to prevent people from starting their own threads about non-anime/jpop bands.

Is it just me or does the new song from Shihad (aka Pacifier) "Comfort Me" sound a little to similar to Fear Factory - Invisible Wounds. Hmm, its probably just me. Oh well.
Ah, also i've heard a rumour that Frenzal Rhomb are changing their name to Shihad? surely its a joke?

Yes it's a joke, but YES it is true.
Ah, Pacifier. All they need is...is a punch in the face.

Eminem is the one artist who's lyrics just crack me up...I listen to his cds and just can't stop laughing Razz I pre-ordered 'The Eminem Show' and was fairly impressed with it...it's a change in tone from his previous albumns, less angsty/angry. 'Business' and 'Without Me' are the standout tracks on the albumn...the 'Without Me' video clip is gold )

Am I the only one here who simply cant stand Emenim?
Im sorry, but lyrics mean nothing if it still classifies as noise pollution. Go out and buy a comedy album or something instead...

Probably not. It surprises me that you wouldn't get the joke though (I'm presuming you do).

*Resists urge to quote AC/DC at this point*

As to comedy albums, anyone who doesn't own a Bill Hicks CD is a fool to themselves and a burden to others.
