D'oh... I editted my post to put in JSA cause when I re-read it I thought "I can't believe I didn't include JSA in that list!" forgetting the reason why I didn't!!

Anyway, another one which I'd like a good release of is the Korean teen gross out comedy, but with a much heavier moral story to it than the likes of American Pie,

Sex Is Zero

Interesting question! Razz It doesn't, though there are definitely some geographical arguments there. Madman Cinema will be handling Russian movies and, for the time being, Indian movies as well.

There are always exceptions... eg. Akira Kurosawa's marvellous Russian epic Dersu Uzala would still find its place under Asian cinema.

OMG did you say INDIAN films??

Bollywood film love abounds! The film I would desperately love to get a release of would have to be "Hum". I actually saw it in India, and while the story is almost completely nonsensical, was brilliant fun.

Other aquisition suggestions I have are for some particular films that currently don't have a good, uncut release anywhere. Certain other companies hold the rights to them, I think, but I don't know when those rights expire... anyway the films are:

First Strike (HK/US film, Language -Cantonese, English)
Drunken Master 2 (HK film, Language - Cantonese)
Rumble In The Bronx (HK/US film, Language - Cantonese, English)
Thunderbolt (HK film, Language - Cantonese)

- all from Jackie Chan. There aren't decent original language, full uncut versions with english subs available anywhere on dvd (that I'm aware of), so those would be great!
The same goes for
Fist of Legend - (HK film, Language - Cantonese, Japanese)

I'm so in for Dellamorte Dellamore too. I saw it on sbs ages ago, and was searching for ages for the title for it (After I forgot it).
Mostly anything Chow Yun-Fat (city on fire, prison on fire 1 and 2, city war, THE KILLER, hardboiled .... ) hell all of it!

The good Jackie chan stuff (dragon lord, young master, drunken master 2, armour of gold ... plus a whole bunch of other stuff)

ohh maybe Sex and Zen too Razz

Wow! In India? That would've been an amazing experience. Smile My first Indian film was in the USA - Roja, unsubtitled.

Some Indian films are getting released under Madman Cinema. Kaante (with Amitabh Bachchan!) is getting released today with a few more films on the way.

Haven't heard of Hum - will have a look. My personal fave is Dil Chahta Hai. Love that film!

I believe that pretty much ALL of Jackie's back catalogue has been taken.
As has Jet Li, as has Peter Jackson. Please stop asking for these, even if they are only available as hack jobs, it still means the licence is unavailable.

I noticed that most of the MM Cinema titles tend to be more dramas, I would love to see some of the fun and nonsensical foreign films brought out.

One more suggestion from me would be for Hal Hartley's films to be available on DVD. My favourites would be "The Unbelievable Truth", "Trust", "Simple Men" and "Amateur". Some of these are available, or soon to be available in the US, but I don't think they have had any other releases. The VHS licence is held by First Release (for at least Amateur and The Unbelievable Truth).

Kolkoz (?spelling) "The Pirates" a European film about a couple of guys who have a pirate radio station and their neighbour who they both fall in love with. If this got a release (hopefully with the soundtrack available too) I would be a very happy little chicken.

I'd really like to see more of the fun foreign films that are out there get a release here too.

sorry if any of these have already been mentioned in other threads.

also i'd really like to see madman cinema bring out dellamorte dellamore on dvd but i'm told it was already released here under another the name "of death and love" ..i've never seen a copy of it anywhere though, at all. it's the best zombie movie ever made imo.

Eastern Condors! I remember seeing that on SBS. Damn that was an awesome film and one I've wanted to see again for ages.

Other films asians films I'd like to see:

GunHed (A japanese film about a guy with a transforming tank. This was actually released in Australia on video, buy Siren, but I only ever saw one copy ANYWHERE here in Tassie, and by the time I managed to scrape together 30 bucks, it was gone Sad )

Dragonball Z (I heard there was a Hong Kong live action version of DBZ. Apparently it's screen on some sort of International channel in the US, but apart from hearing people talk about it, I don't know much eles)

A Man Called Hero (I already have this on video, but the subtitles are woeful and it seems like they and half the video strech of the screen. I THINK it's a Siren release, but I dunno, becuase I bought it cheap with no case from Target. hey, it was only 5 bucks)

I was under the impression that a Man called Hero was available in Australia via a very dodgy DVD release by Home Cinema. Checking Ezy DVD's website it seems I was wrong and the only DVD they actually own is the Storm Riders which is butchered horribly.

If that is the case I couldn't reccomend Waterboys (Japan) highly enough!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299213/

"It's a Japanese comedy about a group of male synchronised swimmers - how cool is that!?

Well, "not very", you'd be forgiven for thinking... certainly I wouldn't have been interested, if not for consistently positive low level press amongst the internet community. Thankfully, the warm response is quite justified - Waterboys takes its seemingly mundane premise (perhaps more resonant in patriarchal Japan) and turns it into a delightful little comedy.

Suzuki is the only member of the swimming team at Tadano Boy's High School... until the new swimming teacher arrives and she is an extremely "hot babe". Suddenly everybody wants to be on the swim team... until they discover that what she teaches is Synchronised Swimming. Apparently, this is considered an extremely non-manly thing to do in Japan. Only five pupils decide to stick with it anyway, for personal reasons that you will discover through the course of the movie. Everyone laughs at them, ridicules them and above all doubts them... so naturally the impetus to succeed is strong.

Waterboys is a genre movie at heart, taking the standard sports movie misfits and putting them through trials and tests to see what heights they can rise to under pressure. Nothing too surprising, but it's all dressed up quite charmingly here. Quirky characters genuinely engage your interest and affections, and the humour is brisk and mostly absurd. The script treads familiar ground without it ever seeming tired or cliched, finding new ways of exploring each situation. It's a funny movie, a very sweet movie and a highly enjoyable one.

Recommended. "

I would also like to add a suggestion for Moonchild (starring Gackt & Hyde Very Happy ). Currently the only way to get it is in a $100 3 disc set, which is rather expensive to buy especially if you are buying the movie only based on recommendations.

Drunken Master has a decent release by Columbia-Tristar. The only problem is that some parts of the Chinese dialoue was lost and had to be substituded with the English dub. Apart from that, the DVD is quite good. The rights for Drunken Master 2 is owned by Disney (I think) and released under the Legend of Drunken Master title. This release is also heavily cut and it's in English dub obly. Evil or Very Mad

Quote:
fist of legend - gordon chan

I think this is also owned by Disney. Sad Crying or Very sad

More suggestions:

Iron Fisted Monk
The Magnificent Butcher

Seconding "My Wife Is A Gangster" - very cool film about a female gangster trying to fulfill the wishes of her dying sister. Very cool, quite amusing, and generally great to watch.

A few of the Akira Kurosawa films are being released by MM. Until all deals are finalised they cannot discuss what else is being looked at, but we can hope that MM will be getting more of his stuff.

Infernal Affairs 2 (and the upcoming 3 which is in production I think). After seeing the first movie I thirst for it's prequal. Yes 2 is a prequal to the first movie.

umm are you sure? Cause the movie Ping * Pong is definately NOTHING like the Ping Pong Club anime... PPC anime is about a group of perverted teens there's hardly any actual ping pong invovled just them trying to be perverts.

As has been said- All of Jet Li's back catalogue has dibs. That INCLUDES all of the OUATIC series.

Please read the entire thread to see if the film you want to suggest is actually getting a release.

A lot of these HK films you guys/gals want have already been released in excellent editions from Hong Kong Legends which are PAL and either region 0 or region 2/4 encoded so why are you waiting Laughing

Yes you're right Disney like in the US and UK (although they've yet to release it, in the UK) have the rights to Drunken Master 2 so we're out of luck.

Off the top of my head how about these?:

1. Japan, Japanese - Kairo I second it's a great film and the only one to come close to "Ringu" (I've yet to see the Korean film "A Tale of Two Sisters").

2. Korea, Korean - My Sassy Girl starring Ji-hyun Jun. It has several decent Korean releases but none have English subtitled extras.

The two I'm most interested in a re-release are:

3. Korea, Korean - Il Mare also Ji-hyun Jun. It's a wonderful romance story with a very clever plot. While the Korean and HK releases have English subtitles both have non-anamorphic transfers with dreadful subtitles.

But most importantly:

4. Hong Kong, Cantonese - Ashes of Time Badly needs a new release. I would settle right now for an acceptable release. All releases so far have been dreadful and the companies should have been sued for releasing them a long time ago.

Oh yes Shiri also but this time unlike the R1/UK R2 release keep the DTS and extras from the Korean release. It's from Korean and the language is Korean.

And:

Heroes Among Heroes - Hong Kong, Cantonese. I don't believe Donnie Yen's back catalogue has dibs. Columbia Tristar have recently released this on R1 but redubbed and retitled it:

Most HKL titles are reasonably priced on their site. I picked up a OUATIC 3 DVD set for 19 Pounds, which is about $60 AUD. A lot of their titles sell for around 9 Pounds (about $30).

After numerous times that Zedstar has written the following:

As has been said- All of Jet Li's (and Jackie Chan's) back catalogue has dibs. That INCLUDES all of the OUATIC series.

Please read the entire thread to see if the film you want to suggest is actually getting a release.

Immediately right after that, someone posts:

City Hunter and Project A...
That is all

That's just too damn funny. Laughing

I'd really like to see Zhang Yimou's, Wong Kar-Wai's and Shunji Iwai's stuff get released on the Eastern Eye label... though those films might be a bit slow and arthouse for Eastern Eye. I'd like to see local releases of Takeshi Kitano and Johnnie To stuff too.

I'd also like to see the following films released:

Il Mare (Korea)
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Korea)
Nowhere to Hide (Korea)
Memories of Murder (Korea)
Silmido (Korea)
Azumi (Japan)
Battlefield Baseball (Japan)

I'm REALLY keen to see Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (I'll probably just buy the Korean DVD). It's supposed to be a depressing arthouse-style flick where a wrong is avenged... and then the vengeance is avenged... and then THAT vengeance is avenged and so on. And it has Song Kang-Ho Very Happy. Same with Memories of Murder, a serial-killer film which also features music composed by the same guy who did the Samurai X/Kenshin OVA's.
